Rebecca Reynolds Seal Pics

Hey, Joey!
Thought you and our neighbors might be interested in pictures of a seal that came to Montgomery’s Cove to bask in the sun today.
I’d never witnessed this before, but David Montgomery said that they’ve been here in the past, lying around on the ice for hours.
It was incredible to watch this seal move across the ice – it didn’t seem to expend any more energy than absolutely necessary.
Does anyone know this seal and does this one have a name already?
😀

Did You Know (Bananas)

Bananas vintage thrift shop, main street, Gloucester

Spring is in the air.  If you’re tired of the drab winter colors and want to switch to something bright, colorful and springy without having to unpack your warm weather things, stop in to Bananas at 78 Main Street, Gloucester.  I love thrift shops, and Bananas is really eclectic and fun, with great prices and a huge selection of clothing, funky jewelry, shoes, feather boas (a must have), hats and more.  Even if you’re not in the market to buy, or don’t wear second hand (heaven forbid), stop in just for the experience; it will make you smile.

Things To Do- The Wish Ball March 12th

WISHpostcard

Danvers, Mass. (February X, 2011) – Of the nearly 24 million Americans that have diabetes,  as many as 3 million Americans have type I diabetes, which usually strikes children and young adults. In fact, a staggering 40 children every day are diagnosed with the disease.  Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure is hoping to reduce these numbers by raising funds at the Wish Ball, an evening of dinner and dancing, to be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers, Massachusetts.
Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure was founded by Terry Palmisano of Gloucester as a way to help find a cure in honor of her granddaughter Wylinn who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2008, just before turning four years-old.  Palmisano, encouraged by her team’s fundraising success at a Walk to Cure Diabetes event in Boston, came up with the idea of selling special “Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure” grocery/tote bags at local stores, including Goodies Ice Cream in Danvers, owned by her son and daughter-in-law, Wylinn’s parents, John and Stefani Palmisano.  In addition to raising money, the bags also serve an educational purpose as tucked inside each one is a Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms Sheet.
Feeling that more was needed to raise awareness and fund the research needed to find a cure, Linda Flaherty of Danvers, a friend of Terry’s, decided they could do more.  “Everyone has been touched by diabetes and we really wanted to do something about it,” said Terry Palmisano.  Encouraged by the support of colleagues and friends, now known as the Friends of Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure, they decided that they could increase awareness, raise the most money, and brighten an otherwise dreary month by hosting a gala event.
The Wish Ball, an elegant, “Black Tie Optional” gala, sponsored by the Friends of Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure will be held at the Danversport Yacht Club on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 6:00pm – midnight.  World class entertainment to be provided by the World Premier Band.  Tickets are $75 each.  Proceeds will support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the leader in diabetes research worldwide  and consistently ranked among the best-managed charitable organizations.
In addition to ticket sales, organizers are looking for sponsors for the event as well as donations of raffle items.  Ads are also available in the Wish Ball program book.  To purchase tickets or make a donation, please contact Linda Flaherty at (978) 808-5233 or wishballcomm@aol.com.

Passports Takes Armchair Travel to New Heights

It’s another frigid night on the North Shore, and you’re in the depths of the winter doldrums. You’re contemplating grabbing your suitcase and wait listing yourself on the first flight south.

Not a bad idea, but we’ve got an easier solution for you: head for Passports where warm popovers, a convivial atmosphere, and a creative menu will cheer you up in no time.

We had a great meal last weekend at this popular Gloucester spot. There were tons of hot and cold tapas to choose from, followed by entrees that were far from run of the mill, and everything was extremely reasonable.

Cait (#1 grandkid) and I walked the dog on Good Harbor yesterday. The tide was extremely high and we couldn’t get over the bridge, so we parked on the Brier Neck side.  Beautiful day for the beach! Cait took this photo with the 360Panorama app. Pretty cool!

And here’s one that I took:

Maxfield Answers the Call and He’s Bringing Hell With Him!

Doug Maxfield Has Responded In His Blog Post on NorthShoreWaterMan.

When asked if he would enter the Farm Bar and Grille DTF Burger Challenge this was his response-

Is Doug Maxfield DTF?

The question thousands have been asking is if Doug Maxfield will step up and take the Farm Bar and Grille DTF Burger Challenge next Thursday night and compete against such luminaries as Ed “I’ll do anything” Collard", Frankie The Silver Bullet Gwynne, Jeremy The Great Jewish Hope Goldberg and Patrick Lederhosen Ryan.

Maxfield- The man behind my favorite blog NorthShoreWaterman, and the most honest fisherman I’ve never met has yet to be heard from but inquiring minds want to know if he will enter the competition Thursday night at The Farm.

Could we potentially see Maxfield’s name on the same plaque as Dangerous Dick Low and Big Lar?

Ten Foot Polecats at The Farm in Essex ~ Tonight ~ 2-18-2011

I have known  two of Ten Foot Polecats for over five years and seen this band for over two  following them all over Massachusetts to many venues. They tap into the past in such a way you would think they were from it for real. Deep nitty gritty, rockin, smokin blues. I do not know how anyone can sit still with out wiggling around or getting up on the floor to shake their stuff. Dave Darling the drummer left at the end of the year and now Chad has taken over. I don’t think they could have picked a better choice to fill his place, although the way I see it no one can. Dave will surely be missed. It is never the same when an original member leaves but on the other hand you look forward to new things such as more originals like they played out in Worcester a week ago.

See What My Buddy Done and Squeeze are up on the top of the list for favorites. They cover so many songs in one night and I am looking forward to hearing the new ones again and hoping for a new CD to come out soon.

Their bio:

Ten Foot Polecats are a three piece band from the Boston/Worcester Massachusetts area but their influence is drawn from deep roots of the North Mississippi Hill Country.  They have constructed a very definite sound that sets them apart from other artists as they bring a very aggressive attitude and approach to their brand of blues and roots.  Due to this, they have made quite an impression on the national and local music scenes as they are currently one of the few blues based bands booked across the country in the rock, punk, and psychobilly circuits along with the various blues and roots circles.

Check them out,  have a listen.  The player starts right up when you click on their site. I love them and maybe you will too.

Did You Know (No Dead Squammers)

That no one associated with Annisquam died recently?  I learned an interesting bit of Annisquam tradition.  When someone who has ever lived in Annisquam dies, even if they had moved away, the flag at the Village Hall is flown at half-mast and a note is left giving the details of the decedent.  I thought that was a pretty special tradition, and unique way to let people to know that a fellow “Squammer” had passed.  (Information courtesy of Jill Carter).

Fenway Park getting ready for the Yankees on Friday April 8th

The new Center Field scoreboard is the most obvious new feature to Fenway Park. This morning they lowered the last black panel of screen into place. It’s hard to see what it is made of because it is so black it sucks the light out of your eyeballs.

This thing is massive. 100 feet wide and 38 feet high. 65 brazillion high intensity LED lights imbedded and IBM Watson will be used to run the HD video on this screen.

OK, I don’t know how many lights and the computer will be slightly smaller than Watson.  Now to figure out how to get tickets for Opening Day.

Round one of the Gourmoo Cook Off–check it out!

Hi Friends!

No, I didn’t get stuck head first in a snow bank or lost in a blizzard…..these last few months have been chaotic and wonderful at the same time and it is time to finally come up for air……….and write a quick new post.  Getting settled in our new apartment and all is well 🙂

I know that some of you new that I went to the Gourmoo Cook off sponsored by Lactaid Milk the first week in December but if you didn’t know that, you do now :-).  I have to say, wearing flip flops in December was a real treat.

So, without further delay, here is the first installment in the series, the Appetizer Round:

PS–Steve Connolly Seafood shipped those gorgeous scallops out to California for me!  🙂  Thank you!
