Big Bird ID Request From Martha Lazarus

Hi Joey,

Some noisy crows attracted my attention to this magnificent bird passing by Lane’s Cove this morning.  Can someone help me identify it?

Cheers,

Martha Lazarus

My completely uneducated guess is a Red Tailed Hawk but hope to hear from the many bird watching freaks that frequent GMG Smile

  1. Could it be an eagle? I hope more experienced bird-watchers chime in here. Don’t think its a hawk. The fact that you describe it as magnificent and looking at the the wings and head, it leads me to think it’s bald a eagle. They are really huge!
    Good luck.

  2. My friend Rob tells me that it’s an immature bald eagle! I believe they don’t get their “bald” (white) head feathers until after their first year. (Great pix Martha!)

  3. Definitely an Eagle. Question is if it is a Golden Eagle or juvenile Bald Eagle. November is a great month to see Golden Eagles migrating through Massachusetts.

  4. Thanks, everyone for your comments and references! I guess I would go with immature bald eagle, given the shape of beak and head, the light coloring on the wing, and the size of the bird. (Big.) A bald eagle?? Pretty great. We’ll keep watching.
