Hi Joey,
Some noisy crows attracted my attention to this magnificent bird passing by Lane’s Cove this morning. Can someone help me identify it?
Cheers,
Martha Lazarus

My completely uneducated guess is a Red Tailed Hawk but hope to hear from the many bird watching freaks that frequent GMG

Its either a hawk or ( don’t laugh) a bald eagle..There are some that live in Essex !

Could it be an eagle? I hope more experienced bird-watchers chime in here. Don’t think its a hawk. The fact that you describe it as magnificent and looking at the the wings and head, it leads me to think it’s bald a eagle. They are really huge!
Good luck.

Typo in last line; “a bald eagle”, although I kind of like “bald a eagle” it has a certain ring to it…

Looks like a turkey vulture to me.

I have seen a bald eagle in the past in Wonson’s Cove, East Glo.

Can’t really be sure without seeing what colors it is but, I’d say it’s an Eagle.

My friend Rob tells me that it’s an immature bald eagle! I believe they don’t get their “bald” (white) head feathers until after their first year. (Great pix Martha!)

Definitely an Eagle. Question is if it is a Golden Eagle or juvenile Bald Eagle. November is a great month to see Golden Eagles migrating through Massachusetts.

Thanks, everyone for your comments and references! I guess I would go with immature bald eagle, given the shape of beak and head, the light coloring on the wing, and the size of the bird. (Big.) A bald eagle?? Pretty great. We’ll keep watching.

It’s a beautiful bird, but Big Bird steals the show! 😉

It is a turkey vulture. You can tell by the finger-like extensions on its wing tips.
