After the Storm

This is a painting I just finished of waves off the rocks at Annisquam Light, after the first little storm last week.  As an old surfer, painter, photographer and lifelong lover of the sea, I have long sought to catch/capture that perfect wave.  This one is close, but my quest still continues.

  1. Hi Kathy,
Thanks, waves are challenging. No, I don’t paint with watercolors. I have in the past, but found them too pale and unpredictable for my taste and temperment. That painting was a mixed media, acrylic on watercolor paper with some caran d’ache (watercolor crayons) and oil pastels to create the swirling movement effect in the wave and on the ocean, and some in the clouds. I’ve recently switched from canvas to watercolor paper, and I love the effect – its soft and you can scruffle and build up layers without it getting overworked looking. Happy to connect with another Gloucester artist. Hope to meet you one day. Happy New Year. Best, E.J.
