YMCA Teen Leaders Club presents $1000 donation to Open Door Food Pantry

Joey –

Thank you all for the GREAT coverage on GMG…it meant a great deal to the kids and to me.

Rick

With deep appreciation and many thanks to the great number of you who supported our teens in this effort.

YMCA Teen Leaders Club presents $1000 donation to Open Door

Back in January, members of the YMCA Teen Leaders Club embarked on their annual “Rockathon to Feed Cape Ann’s Hungry” – with each member rocking in a rocking chair for 24-sleepless hours from 8am Saturday through 8am Sunday. Each Y Teen Leader committed to solicit and collect a minimum of 222 cans. From Youth spent weeks soliciting and then collecting donations of non-perishable food items. In order to accommodate prospective donors who might have difficulty carting caseloads of cans, the club established a “three-for-a-dollar” rate for financial donations for Open Door.

Through the efforts of this fantastic group of local youth, more than 5500 cans and other non-perishable food items were earned and distributed to the Open Door, St. Vincent DePaul Society and directly to local families in need.

On February 11th, the YMCA Teen Leaders Club welcomed special guest Julie LaFontaine, Executive Director of the Open Door. After Julie thanks the teens for their consistently strong efforts year after year, club members proudly presented a $1000 donation – the fiscal culmination of the groups’ collections. The YMCA Teen Leaders Club would like to officially recognize our top three solicitors: Colby Ferris-657, Alex Jones-468 & Zach White-293. We would also like to thanks our families, friends, neighbors and the community for such a tremendous outpouring of support for others in need.

Wally Goosed Me!!

I won’t wait until my normal 2 PM post since this is right off the presses. Today is Red Sox Truck Day and I spotted Wally in the Souvenir Shop. It must have been a long cold winter for Wally since he goosed me big time. 8)

The rest of the story. Here is the truck almost ready to go. It leaves at noon.

What does this all mean? It means there are only six days until Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training (Pap and Wake are already there) and only 43 days until you can eat a real wiener sitting in the bleacher seats in front of Top Dog on Bear Skin Neck.

Miniature Intershell

Mike Lindberg posted a cool Photoshop effect a couple months ago using a “miniaturizing effect”. In posting my shrimp recipe I thought there might be some people who just got off the boat and did not know where the new Intershell Seafood Market was so I combine two tasks. I may need to work on this a bit but if you click and show “all sizes” you may be able to see me standing in front of Intershell.

Gloucester Day With the Bean – Pottery Making At Art Haven

After chatting with Bobby Ryan and Manuel Simoes at Ryan and Wood Distillery we headed back to Beautiful Downtown Gloucester for an art class.  Art Haven is an awesome place to learn and create and the staff is gifted with patience and ease with kids.  You can tell that David Brooks, Dawn Gadow and all the people working there truly love being with the children and what they are doing.  It obviously isn’t just a job for them but a calling.

All the kids were having a blast and it’s unbelievable how some of these very young children have developed their artistic abilities in the Art Haven program.

We didn’t have an appointment, we just popped in and The Bean started right in making about four different things.   A clay mirror frame, a couple rocks with her initials on them and a clay model of our cat Mr JJ Jinglenuts.

Super Lazy Paul Prudhomme’s Native Maine Shrimp

You can look up a recipe for Paul’s Barbecue Shrimp which has cayenne pepper, black pepper, salt, crushed red pepper, thyme leaves, rosemary leaves, oregano leaves and it is fun to get those all fresh.  When you have the time it’s a great recipe. With the Worcestershire Sauce, the beer, and the butter, there nothing better than to soak up the juice with some french bread while eating the shrimp.

But let’s shortcut the lazy way.

1) Go to Intershell and get two pounds of native shrimp with the head on.

2) While there pick up Paul Prudhomme’s Cajun Spice. (Boy that saved a ton of time right there.)

You also need a stick of butter, a tablespoon of Worcestershire Sauce, tablespoon of minced garlic and a bottle of beer. But that’s already in the fridge, right?

3) Rinse shrimp and drain well. Do not even take the heads off unless you have squeamish kids. Behead some of them for the tots but leave plenty of heads on so that shrimp fat is in the pan.

4) Large skillet, stick of butter medium high until melted.

5) Add a tablespoon (more if no kids) of the cajun spice, garlic and the Worcestshire sauce.

6) Add the shrimp and switch to high heat.

7) Shake those shrimp (do not stir) for two minutes.

8) While shaking drink bottle of beer.  (Note to self. Find another way to make a list besides close parenthesis as an “8” and a “)” turns into a little dude with sunglasses on. He does not look out of place  though …)

9) Since you drained the bottle open another one and drink until half cup of beer is left and pour over shrimp.

10) Shake the pan one minute longer.

Remove from heat and serve with french bread. Make sure you bring everything from the pan in a bowl to the table so you can soak up the juice with some french bread or get a loaf of Ciabatta Bread from Shaws. An empty bowl in the middle of the table for the shells and not much of a clean up unless you drank too much beer. Just use a hose.

Gloucester Day With The Bean- Ryan and Wood Distillery

Although I knew I wouldn’t be able to cover the Ryan and Wood official launch of Folly Cove Rum I wanted to pop in and see how GMG photographer and videographers Thom Falzorano and Manuel Simoes were doing with the coverage.

We managed to squeeze in a short interview with Bobby Ryan while the Bean made fart noises on my neck.  Adds to the character of the interview I say!

Thanks to Manuel Simoes for these pics-

Gloucester Day With the Bean-Lobster Platter Find At Main Street Art and Antiques

From The Dress Code we bounced down to David Cox’ Main Street Art and Antiques for my daily dose of David Cox’ hilarity and crazy stories.  We talked about the blog and his assignments while The Bean commented on David’s filing system or lack thereof.

This vintage lobster platter can be had for a mere $28.

So I Lied! Get use to it.

I Promised not to Post another Bathroom related item I but I could’nt pass this one up.
This one is from my Friend and Art Teacher Deb Clarke;
“Hello Paul!  Going to church has taken on a whole different meaning in our house.  I have lived here for almost 2 years, cleaned that seat “Religiously” and only noticed this 2 weeks ago.  Maybe worth a post.”
Best,
Deb.
Thanks Deb!
When I was much younger after a night of Bar hopping around Town, I’ve knelt down in front of a similar Church a few times. I’m sure many readers of GMG have done the same.
I’m sure there will be a few Corn Dog Contest Contenders  praying in front of one Thursday Night.
