Art Now: Rockport on September 17th
Kurt Ankeny Writes-
Good Labor Day weekend to you all:
I’m pleased to announce that I will be a part of the Art Now: Rockport evening on September 17th. This is an intimate evening with five of Rockport’s leading contemporary artists where conversation about art and a bit of context provided by Lydia Barry Kutko, a New York based art advisor, will set the tone for the night. We hope that the event will help to contextualize Rockport’s contemporary artists and help familiarize attendees with the artists pushing past the boundaries of the more traditional artworks that Rockport has a reputation for.
Tickets are available for this evening event, please visit www.artnowrockport.com. (The official promo poster is attached to this email.)
Featured artists: Kurt Ankeny, Renata Fryshara, Ben MacAdam, Nina Samoiloff, and Karen Tusinski. Much thanks to Sarah Kelly, Rockport’s very own events guru and all around booster for the arts! She has organized and promoted this event, and we are very happy and grateful to have her in our corner!
Thank you, and I hope to see some of you there!, Kurt

2011 GLOUCESTER SCHOONER FESTIVAL September 2-5th Excitement Heightens as Fleet Grows!
The 27th anniversary Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place Labor Day weekend, September 3-4, 2011. It’s Gloucester’s major marine event, with participating vessels coming from ports along the Eastern Seaboard. There will be both large and small vessels—ranging from 19 feet to over 100 feet in length. You will see new boats and old boats, from newly built to over 100 years old! Gloucester’s Thomas E. Lannon, Essex’ Ardelle, Lewis H. Story, American Eagle from Rockland, Maine, The Alabama, Liberty Clipper, Roseway and many more!
The Mayor’s Race is the major event of every Schooner Festival and will take place this year on Sunday, September 4, with over 20 schooners expected to compete for the Esperanto Cup, the Cameron Cup, and the Ramsey Plate. Racing starts on Saturday afternoon with seven classes of traditional small craft, consisting of approximately 50 vessels from 19 to 45 feet long.
“This event is a chance for Cape Ann sailors to celebrate our traditions and also show the visiting competition out on the water how to win.” said Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bob Hastings. “Ultimately, though, it is just a great weekend to plan to be in Gloucester.”
An obvious choice for boat lovers, the Schooner Festival also offers plenty of shore side events. On Saturday, these include Gloucester Maritime Heritage Day, walking tours of Gloucester’s Harborfront (hosted by The Schooner Adventure), the lighted boat parade, and a gala fireworks display over Gloucester Harbor. Sunday morning, a grand Parade of Sail passes the Boulevard promenade (Stacy Boulevard, Route 127) as the large schooners head out to sea for the Mayor’s Race.
New in 2011 is a Schooner Festival Raffle with a two-hour private cruise for 30 guests on the schooner Ardelle as the grand prize. Additional prizes include a Gift Basket from Ryan & Wood Distilleries, two tickets for a cruise aboard the schooner Thomas E. Lannon, and an autographed copy of Festival Chair’s recently published children’s book “The Stowaway Mouse.” Tickets for the raffle will be available on Friday, August 19, from Schooner Festival Committee members and at the Chamber office (978-283-1601).
Corporate support is provided for the Gloucester Schooner Festival from TD Bank and Market Basket. The Festival is planned and organized by the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee, composed of representatives of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and the City of Gloucester. Further information can be obtained by calling 978-283-1601. For a full schedule of events, go to www.capeannvacations.com/schooner.

Camilla MacFadyen: The White-Ellery Farm Project
COMMUNITY CELEBRATION and ART INSTALLATION
Camilla MacFadyen: The White-Ellery Farm ProjectSaturday, August 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
245 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA
"… have you noticed on the pole on the corner of your house a big red mark? Well that is a sign that ‘human beings live here’ and I remember that no one went from our door hungry."
From the diary of Ida Beaman Falk, 1892-197?
The White Ellery Farm Project is a collaborative piece about history, community and our agrarian roots. It is an art/history "happening", gathering artists and farmers together to bring spirit and community back to the old farm. Join friends and neighbors for a community pot luck with food given by the plentiful home gardens of Cape Ann. If possible, bring an old family recipe or a salad from your garden to share. Take this opportunity to sit with and meet the people in your community and learn about this precious historic farm.
Inside the historic house, Camilla MacFadyen will show her large collograph printed silk landscapes along with an exhibit of photographs of the old farm and an audio diary. Shep Abbott’s film More precious than Gold, a historical documentary on the early settlers of Cape Ann, will play continuously throughout the day. Outside, there will be a small Farmers Market with goods and produce for sale from local farms including the Alprilla Farm in Essex, and the Riverdale Youth Garden in Gloucester.
