TheHiveSideWalkCape Ann Art Haven and The Hive Center celebrated their 5 year and 1 year anniversaries on August 27. Over the past five years, we have emerged as important members of downtown Gloucester, serving hundreds of youth, artists and emerging artists. Our founder David Brooks expressed deep appreciation to all those who have been the backbone of the success that Art Haven has seen over the years. “It has been amazing to see so many amazing people willing to lend a hand to make it all possible. We have been blessed and are excited to have the support as we look to the future at all that is to come.”

Our anniversary party drew over a hundred people to The Hive and its success was largely due to the support of various donors. We have many “Thank You“s to share! Chive Catering and Sustainable Event Planning provided all the delicious food, which was made possible through food donations from local farms. Chive runs zero-waste events and composts all their left over products.  Ryan & Wood, Cape Ann Brewery Company and Seabreeze Liquors provided all the adult libations. Cape Pond Ice generously donated all the ice to keep the drinks nice and chilled. Most importantly, we want to give a final “shout out”to everyone who came and helped make The Hive truly buzz with life and vitality last Saturday night.

It was such a great time we are planning on making this event an annual summer fling!

Jason Burroughs’ art at The Hive

Yesterday evening at The Hive (on Pleasant Street, less than a block up from Main Street, on the right) there was an opening of an art show by Jason Burroughs in their back room. It was accompanied by a concert by a variety of bands. I stopped in to snag some photos! Jason is an up-and-coming local artist, who also works in the programs offered at The Hive and Art Haven.

He will also be in the gallery during the block party today. Stop by to see the art and meet the artist! And maybe buy a print or an original… Get it before he gets famous and the prices go up!

Phil Cusumano, artist/captain, and volunteer juror for the 2013 HarborWalk Public Art Challenge administered by the Committee for the arts, stopped by to inspect the public art in process on Parsons Street. The artist, James Owen Calderwood, was being filmed for an interview by Lisa Smith for Cape Ann TV. Dale Brown of the Committee for the Arts was there, too.

Though difficult for painting, the off and on rain does provide opportunities for visiting. Last week there were business meetings, here with Sarah Garcia Harbor Planning Director.

While there, we were privileged to witness GREAT news hot off the press and an intensity enough to match their vibrant space! TAG team members wrote and were awarded a $10,000 grant. Congratulations all!

They were heading over to the Farmer’s Market and David promises to send in names and more information. They were also tracking down Mary Ann to share the news; she was at Maritime Gloucester with the Art Haven campers partnership week.

Next time we’ll head down Parsons over to see the permanent public art installation at Maritime Gloucester museum. The twelve foot diameter compass rose is being installed on city property where the HarborWalk crosses onto Maritime Gloucester. Two artists installing new public art downtown and connections—very exciting news.

Origami and Photography Workshops

I will be directing an origami workshop for kids at Art Haven and a digital photography workshop at The Hive this month! Here are descriptions of both. For pricing and additional details, see official websites (at the links provided).

Origami for Kids at Art Haven
Thursdays, June 27, July 4, 11, 18, 25, 3:30-5:00PM
“Origami for Kids” will introduce young artists to the world of origami. Besides learning a variety of basic fun models across a variety of themes, we will go over the essentials of origami terminology and symbols involved in reading origami diagrams, so that the children can learn to fold on their own more easily.

Digital Photography Workshop at The Hive
Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23
July 2 and 16, 4-7PM: Before going out to shoot, we will meet at Art Haven, where the instructor will explain key camera features and shooting tips and techniques, including the differences between file formats (with their relative advantages and disadvantages), how to use manual settings, basics of composition, and shooting HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. We will then go to shoot photographically interesting locations throughout Gloucester, with some suggested themes and perspectives.
July 9 and 23, 4-6PM: We will meet at The Hive to share our favorite photos from the past week and critique each other’s work. Besides providing creative feedback about the shots, the instructor will give instruction on techniques for post-processing using popular software.

Origami class at The Hive tonight!

As previously announced, I will be teaching an origami class at the Hive tonight. I can tailor the content to the interests and needs of those present. We can do some nautically themed origami, including a variety of boats, and maybe a sea serpent (as in the photo above).

Or, have you bought an origami book or kit for yourself or a family member, only to have it get dusty on the shelf because no one can figure it out?  You are not alone! Bring it to the class, and I can teach the group how to read the diagrams and fold some models from the book!  It doesn’t matter how simple or complex the model is – I can help you understand what’s going on.  Sometimes, the problem is that the diagrams are  poorly done, or just plain wrong. I can help you over those obstacles!

As a final option, if there’s something you’d like to learn how to make, sign up for the course and let me know what you want to learn (and what your skill level is), by commenting on this post or by some other means. I will do my best to find something to suit your interest! I have over 100 origami publications in my personal library, and can also find a variety of instructions on the internet.

Don’t Miss Momentum Gallery, only in Gloucester for a Short Time!

  • The talented Bailey Berry, a student at Gordon College, has put together a pop-up gallery for the next few weeks. The show is curated by Bailey and is comprised entirely of works from fellow students in area colleges Endicott, Montserrat & Gordon. Originally designed to be part of an initiative in Peabody to enliven empty storefronts downtown by placing pop-up galleries and other temporary installations, Bailey had to look for alternatives for the gallery after Peabody pulled the plug on the project. She searched for a home for the Momentum Gallery and found the ideal partner in The Hive here in Gloucester. Peabody’s loss is our gain, as the project features work in a variety of media by young artists offering a fresh perspective.
    The details:
    • The show runs opens this weekend, May 25th, at 6 o’clock at The Hive on Pleasant Street. Some great music is lined up and all this music and art and energy can be experienced for just $5. Or five bux, as they say at The Hive because they are so awesome they just spell stuff phonetically.
    • Momentum Gallery will be open 10 to 5, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays by appointment through June 15th. If you would like to partner with Momentum Gallery and donate your services for either the show’s run and or closing party, contact Bailey at momentumpeabody@gmail.com. Origami class at The Hive this Thursday!

Origami class at the Hive tonight!

Tonight, April 25, I will be teaching an origami class at The Hive at 7PM.  The cost is $15 students, $20 adults. Supplies are included.

The theme is “Spring!”  So I am going to offer a “menu” of models we can chose from, including flowers, butterflies, birds, and insects.  The ones in the photo are examples; which models we can do depends on the experience and skill of the workshop participants. I’ll have a range of difficulty from simple to high intermediate.

If you can’t make it to the class, don’t despair! I am hoping to teach classes at The Hive more often after June.  Also, I will be available for private lessons for individuals or groups at other locations if requested.

Making Pottery at the Hive

The Hive offers all sorts of fun art classes, including pottery. I tried my hand at the pottery wheel recently, and had a lot of fun! Here are some photos.

You start by getting your hands dirty…

When you’re done, the clay has to be fired in the kiln with a whole batch of pottery. So, you have to wait a week or so, until it is ready to be painted.

Painting the fired clay comes next…
…then you cover it all with glaze and wait for it to be fired in the kiln again…
…and thus it emerges from the kiln! Not bad for a novice!
And it’s useful, too…

TAG Program Info Session April 3rd At The Hive!

Hi Joe, 

I am the assistant director of a new teen art program called the Teen Artist Guild. The Director, David Brooks, and I have been fortunate to receive funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Youth Reach Grant.

The TAG program gives motivated students between the ages of 13-19 the opportunity to develop skill in the arts in the form of paid work and trains them to utilize their creativity to provide services to the community. To start off we will be taking on 15 student artists in the spring, and hopefully by the summer, be able to increase the number of artists, possibly even double.

TAG members will be paid an hourly wage working to provide artistic services to local business, such as painting store front windows, creating murals, or even printing t-shirts. TAG member will also be giving the opportunity to sell their own artworks through TAG. 50% of the commission goes back into the TAG program itself, while the other half goes to the artist, where they’ll be encouraged to donate 10% to a charity of their choice.

The program info session will be April 3rd at The Hive at 6:00 PM. The day is designed to share the program values and for students to get all the information needed to apply. On April 10th all applications will be in students will be notified by the 12th and will start April 16th. Students will meet Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 6-8pm.

Don’t forget – Origami Class coming up at The Hive, for Easter / Passover!

I’ll be teaching an origami class at The Hive (on Pleasant Street) on March 14 at 7PM!

The theme this time will be Easter and Passover.  Models on our menu to fold include:

  • The traditional origami lily. Easter Lilies are a standard for decorating churches.  On one hand, the white color represents purity and joy.  More importantly, the lily bursts forth and blooms from a bulb which lies buried and hidden in the earth, like Christ who lay in the tomb and rose in glory from under the earth.  This model also introduces origami novices to a standard of the traditional origami repertoire, with its characteristics of elegance and simplification.
  • An Easter bunny/basket (designed by a Korean named Jacky Chan – not the martial arts action movie star!).   Not as directly related to the religious significance of Easter, this model combines a container (maybe for chocolate Easter eggs?) with a rabbit for something that looks kind of like a bunny-shaped slipper.  Cute and functional!
  • A lamb.   The lamb is a central part of the Passover meal, as well as a symbol of Christ for Christians.  This origami design also introduces the origami novice to the use of non-square paper (it is folded from a 2×1 rectangle).

I will have a few more options available to chose from, for both Easter and Passover themes.  That will include a cross (for Christ’s death and resurrection), frogs (one of the plagues leading up to the Passover), a Torah scroll (which contains the account of the Passover), etc.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to fold and photograph examples of each for this post, but you get the idea.

As usual, please contact The Hive to register, so we know how many people will need supplies although one or two latecomers are fine too!

Origami Class coming up at The Hive

I’ll be teaching an origami class at The Hive (on Pleasant Street) on March 14 at 7PM!

The theme this time will be Easter and Passover.  I’ll post photos of some of the models we will be doing, as soon as I pick them out… I’m thinking maybe a cross for the religious side of Easter and a bunny for the secular side of Easter, and I haven’t picked out the Passover designs yet – I have a book with lots of Passover-themed origami that I have to peruse to make a good selection!

Origami at the Hive

Last night I had an origami class at The Hive, with a Valentine’s Day theme.  Although I had a variety of models ready to teach, we ended up focusing on just making a rose, which is a somewhat complicated model. There were two other meetings going on in other rooms, from which we benefitted by getting spillover snacks!

I will be teaching another class in March, although the date is yet to be determined.  The theme is yet to be determined, but some possibilities are:

  • boats and ships (not the typical newspaper sailboat – ones with more variety of shape, maybe some that float, but maybe also some with more detail but less functionality)
  • Origami spirals (kind of abstract but really cool)
  • Suggestions?

Origami Class at The Hive

I’ll be back at The Hive for another origami class this Thursday!

I am still picking out exactly what models I will teach, but I will probably focus on Valentine’s Day-related models – depending on who comes, we will might make a heart bookmark, a rose, and maybe a gift box (a nice box with a lid from one sheet of paper, which we didn’t have time to make during the last origami class).

The rose and the box are more complex models, so we’ll have to see what the participants are ready to take on. I’ll have a few other models ready just in case. Also, I can try to accomodate specific requests, if someone wants to let me know ahead of time.

The class will be on Thursday, February 7, 7-9pm, $15 student/$20 adult.  If possible, please register ahead of time, so we know how many plan for. Call 978.283.3889 or email thehive@arthaven.org
