Origami class at the Hive, April 25

Next Thursday, April 25, I will be teaching an origami class at The Hive at 7PM.  The cost is $15 students, $20 adults. Supplies are included.

The theme is “Spring!”  So I am going to offer a “menu” of models we can chose from, including flowers, butterflies, birds, and insects.  The ones in the photo are examples; which models we can do depends on the experience and skill of the workshop participants. I’ll have a range of difficulty from simple to high intermediate.

Cherry Blossoms

Cincinnati is typically about a week and a half to two weeks ahead of us in spring bloom power.

This past weekend my dear sister-in-law, Amy, remarried a super great guy, Arnold. The reception was held at the Cincinnati Country Club where we also stayed for several nights.

The early spring flowering trees were in full glorious bloom, including hawthorns, magnolias, and cherry trees, and all looked luxuriously lush and brilliantly fresh–

Wednesday, March 20 at 7:02AM Vernal Equinox

Spring will arrive at 7:02 AM on Wednesday morning shortly after sunrise at 6:45 AM. Start practicing standing raw eggs on their end. Rubber Duck is a master.

It won’t be long until we dip our duck feet in the water.

duckfeetRight now it is a bit too soon. The A01 buoy off Gloucester Harbor is recording 40 F from the surface detector all the way down to 50 meters. in the next month or so that 50 meter detector will still be at 40 F but the surface will creep up to 50F and beyond. 50 F is where I draw the line for flipping my kayak. Arms and legs still function for an hour at 50 F but colder than that and paddle is just too hard to grasp. So when the air temp gets really mild make sure your personal flotation device is up to snuff and stick close to shore. Better yet, wait a few more weeks until that A01 buoy reads 50F.

ps. Seasonal Openings 2013 Part I will be posted on the first day of spring. Our first seasonal opening is March 31st. Can you guess?

Spring has sprung, with fragrant flowers and beautiful butterflies

This fragrant bush attracted both the butterfly and me... It is in front of a house next to the post office on Dale Ave.

March, The New Year starts tomorrow

Until King Numa screwed things up in 713 BC, March was the beginning of the year. Since March is my favorite month I never followed the king’s edict so today is New Year’s Eve. The Romans started the year with March because March is from Mars, god of war and you could start a war campaign in March and not get bogged down. But there are tons of other reasons why March is the greatest month. Everything starts in March.

March 1st: Hummingbirds have just hit the gulf coast and will be here soon. Monarch butterflies not far behind.

March 1st: First day of the year, first day of spring if you don’t go by the new fangled calendar.

March 4th: Gather in crowds , yell out the name of the day, and March forth. This is a Friday so a pub crawl would be good on this day. Stone Pub, Dog Bar, Minglewood Tavern, Rhumb Line.

March 5th: New Moon

March 6th: The sliver of the new waxing moon crescent will be paired just above the setting sun with Jupiter. With binoculars you might glimpse Mercury below the pair before it sets right after the sun.

March 7th: My Birthday. Now you know why this is my favorite month, I celebrate all month long.

March 13th: Spring Ahead! DST starts so instead of the sun setting at 5:45PM the day before it sets at 6:46 PM! Gin and Tonic on the deck as the sun goes down.

March 14: Pi Day. Be an even bigger nerd and have a drink, 3/14 @ 1:59 PM and 26 seconds.

March 15: The Ides of March “Et tu, Brute?” Caesar stabbed 23 times. Toga! Toga! Toga!

March 17th: Saint Patrick’s Day, green beer on a Thursday this year.

March 19th: Full Moon. This March full moon causes Easter to occur late, April 24th this year.

March 19th: Boston Derby Dames in Wilmington, 4PM. Full moon and roller derby? Twice as crazy!

March 20: wicked low tide at 6:25PM and sun sets at 6:54PM. Take dog for a walk on Good Harbor Beach.

March 20, 7:21PM: Spring Equinox, take dog for a walk on Good Harbor Beach.

March 31st: Red Sox Baseball season’s eve. Sox are tied for the best record in baseball.

Print this list out and put it on your fridge along with the Gloucester Harbor Tide Chart to get the most out of your March. Before you know it I will be posting seasonal openings and we can all meet at the Cupboard for a Fish and cheese sandwich. Top Dog in Rockport is opening Saturday, April 2nd. OK, maybe April is my favorite month.

Who’s got “First Flower”?

On December 6 Sharon posted a frozen chrysanthemum as last flower. What I want to see is first flower. It might reach 50 degrees tomorrow and right through the weekend. So can we make a contest for who can get a first flower posted? Crocus, Pussy Willow, even just the buds on a Weeping Willow will do it for me. Extra points if there is a boat in the background.

If there is a Crocus flowering in your yard Miss Etiquette says it is OK to drink Gin and Tonics in the backyard. Find that crocus.

Wally goes to Florida this Friday

This Friday, Feb. 12, the Red Sox truck pulls out of Fenway Park for the 1,467 mile long trek to Spring training in Fort Myers. Forget about that rat in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, this is the harbinger of spring.

I’ll be down there to give Wally a goose (see photo of me goosing Wally). If you meet me down there we can go have Italian Sausages on Yawkey Way and pretend it’s summer.

Annual event for me. Next photo I am goosing Wally a few years back:

What’s your Saturday look like?

gardening

Some people have certain chores or errands they do every Saturday. They do laundry, banking, baking, shopping, visit a relative, etc. Others wing it. Usually that’s what I do.

It depends almost entirely on the weather. If it was warm and sunny today, I would have taken a short bike ride after breakfast. Or go out and look for signs of spring with the camera.

But since today’s kinda iffy, I think I’ll go down and see the Charlie Lowe photography exhibit at the Cape Ann Museum. It’s free on Saturday mornings for locals. Then visit my Mom for a while. I also want to go look at mountain bikes. But I’ll have my camera with me…just in case.

So what are your plans today? Are you a routine person or do you go with whatever comes up?

Sunday Morning Steeple

st-ann

I got up early again this morning and stopped down by Capt. Joe’s. It was about 7:00 and the sun, not as bright as yesterday, softly warmed the cove.

I absolutely love this time of day, especially on the weekends. And Spring is definitely on its way. The birds are extremely animated. Everywhere I go – sparrows, crows, gulls, woodpeckers, cardinals, chickadees, geese, buffleheads, ducks – a beautiful cacophony.
