Hi Joey,
Nick (my husband) took these pictures aboard the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon yesterday morning while we escorted the Picton Castle into the harbor. What a treat!

Gloucester At Dawn Spirit Of Massachusetts 7/6/09 4:45AM
I went down to the GMHC this morning to take some pics for you. Some of the Spirit of Massachusetts and the American Eagle. We used to unload the American Eagle when it was a dragger owned by Joe Piscatello. I can’t tell you how much whiting we unloaded from that boat in the early eighties. They did an unbelievable transformation to turn it into a schooner.

Captains Update – Saturday, July 04, 2009
By Capt. Simon Colley
Capt. Log-v14-09 Charleston-Boston Day 6
Spirit’s position at 1200 EDT: Saturday July 4th.
40º 46’N’ x 68º41’W
COG 341ºT
SOG 9-10 knots
WxS’ly breeze, Force 5-6, moderate sea.
Barometer 1006 mb and steady.
Beam reach under full canvas.
Noon run: 169 NM as the crow flies.
724 NM from Charleston
141 NM to Finish line off Boston
A phenomenal day, surging along at 12 to 14 knots through the water, fighting quite a current as we near Nantucket. When that turns in our favour we shall really pick up speed.
It was a tight race as we rounded Waypoint 2, second on the water. We had caught up 32 miles on Rona II overnight, but Urania was only 13 Miles behind us at the noon check in, Tecla some 30 Miles behind her. Crew are steering and trimming brilliantly and there’s a buzz as we near the finish line with such excellent competition.

All three of our young Bermudian watch leaders, Jake Burchall, Denzel Todd, and Kristen Greene, have recently worked their way up from trainees by demonstrating maturity, leadership and a commitment to the ship. They are doing an outstanding job and continue to take advantage of opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge.
We expect to cross the finish line early tomorrow morning, and will be proceeding to Gloucester for a guest appearance in a local Tall Ships festival, while the rest of the fleet catches up for the main Boston event.
Best to all
Simon

Tall Ship Camp Aboard The Spirit Of Masschusetts Video
Sail Gloucester July 4-7 Schedule Of Events!
Spirit Of Massachusetts Tall Ship Camp and The Paint Factory
Before talking to the kids I was expecting them to be dying to get off the ship as it was basically 5 days of cloudy rainy weather but to my surprise they were all in great spirits and it was quite apparent that they had made some serious friendships. One of the kids when asked about the wet conditions they said proudly “it’s sailors weather”! They met as strangers just 5 days prior but became shipmates for life. The videos tell the story and the first one will be posted at 10AM.

I have tons of pics and video to share with you over the course of the next week. Sharon will be sailing also and get the on hands pics only you can get while at sea.

On Sunday a group of kids gathered on the dock behind the Heritage Center for the adventure of a lifetime! They were taking a 5 day trip on the Spirit of Massachusetts using the ocean as a classroom.
Tall ship sailing involves teamwork, adventure and strength of character. This is the platform off which the kids and crew will explore the sea. This summer Gloucester Museum School Project Adventure Summer Camp is offering four opportunities for campers to embark on a fantastic voyage of discovery!
Thirteen year old Gloucester student Jessica Blazewicz will be writing log entries for the trip and sending them to us to share with our readers. Watch for upcoming posts on this incredible adventure!
Pirate Faire Fun Aboard The Thomas E Lannon Schooner
Hi Joey,
I thought I’d let you know about what we are planning for next weekend on the Lannon. You probably know about the New England Pirate Faire, being held at Stage Fort Park on Saturday and Sunday. To tie in with what they are doing, we are offering Pirate Sails on the Lannon.
Saturday and Sunday morning we are part of the action at Stage Fort Park . We are sailing from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will have NEPF pirates onboard. Costumes are encouraged. There will be cannon fire involved as we join the action at Half Moon Beach. We can’t tell ye too much, or we’d have to kill ye! Aarrgh! All ages are welcome on this sail. $25/kids, $37.50/adults.
On Saturday night, from 7:00-9:00 we are hosting a Pirate Ball on the Lannon for Pirates 21 and older. Costumes, prizes, grog, NEPF Pirates and lots of pirate fun for sea dogs and saucy wenches. $50/adult includes a ration of grog. We are hoping people will enjoy the fun at Stage Fort Park , grab a bite to eat at the Block Party downtown, then join us for more Pirate antics at the Pirate Ball. Aarrgh!
Reservations are suggested. Info is at http://schooner.org/tel/feature.htm or (978) 281-6634.
Thanks for helping us get the word out.

Chickity Check It! Bowsprite: A New York Harbor Sketchbook
I know it’s from *blech* New York, but this blog has some fantastic photos, watercolors and stories from *blech* New York harbor. Well worth a look. If you are a schooner lover it’s a must visit.
Hedre’s a funny post about “Fishing Boats”- http://bowsprite.wordpress.com/2009/05/01/fishing-boats/
There’s also some beautiful watercolors of the Lettie G- http://bowsprite.wordpress.com/2009/04/19/the-schooners-of-new-york-harbor/
The author lists the Lettie G as the “Schooner Howard G. Lettie”.
I always thought it was the Lettie G Howard, goes to show how much I know about these boats.
