Sam Hartson To Present- “This Is Fiesta” at Cape Ann Community Cinema

Sam Writes-

I don’t know how energetic that video is, but I thought it captured more of an epic moment. That feeling that so few know when they’re carried on the shoulders of their friends, lifting that once-seemingly unattainable flag high into the air and realizing they’ve earned a incredible achievement and can now be called a champ. What must he have been thinking, feeling. His mind, likely abuzz with euphoria and optimism and thoughts of what comes next. Fused permanently into Fiesta history and united with nearly 100 years of champions and culture. Only a select few know what it’s like to ride down Fiesta’s main artery and down the fort into the heart of that incredible Fiesta energy.

That’s what I tried to capture in “This is Fiesta”. It’s an understanding of Gloucester on that tremendous weekend. A perspective, a feeling. An emotion. There’s something in the air in Gloucester that just seems to overflow and pour into the streets of the hot and humid city in late June. The people are happier, electricity flows through their veins as well as through the lights around the altar, the core of St. Peter’s celebration that continually pumps music and excitement from its speakers and from the voices of hundreds of young guys and girls whose screaming voices can be heard miles away as they pay enormous amounts of money to ride and play at the carnival. Fiesta is less an event and more an experience, and everyone experiences it differently. So the film offers a different perspective and serves as an inspiration to really explore the events of this magnanimous cultural spectacle that is entirely unique to the fishing port. It encourages the audience to want to know more and to make their fiesta experience an original and memorable one.

joey – this is a section of a page from the july 5 1960 gdt showing scenes from that year’s fiesta.  i think i found it in somebody’s trash a long time ago.  i thought you could crop down to some of the photos showing sporting events (the vertical! greasy pole – bring that one back!).  i think most of the photos were by charlie lowe, the master, but no bylines, just ‘times staff’.

11 Days!!! New Contest- Fiesta Families

The Infamous One Writes-

joey – i’ll stick with the reisman color slides for now, but the black and white photos tell a story too.  more of them later.  i won’t ask for the names of these family members – they might be visiting from out of town – but to win the prize, you have to tell me the exact location of these pix, street AND number.  and don’t try to make me blink … infamous already KNOWS the answer, because he looked up ‘john’s barber shop’ in the 1952 city directory at the cape ann museum archives.  museum has a full set of these, just like another gloucester treasure – the sawyer free library.  use ’em or lose ’em!
infamous f.b.  stay tuned, don’t turn that dial!
[i’ll print up the ladies for kathy g and she can pick them up at the museum front desk weds. morning on, at her convenience.  is this kathy g. roberts?]

Yes Fred it is THAT Kathy G Roberts who took home the gold yesterday!  No double winners Kathy, so you could guess again but if someone else gets this one they can stake claim to the prize unless of course you are the only winner.

Patricia Osborn 2010 KAOS Seine Boat Crew Picture

Hi Joey-  I have a pretty great shot of the KAOS boat from the seine boat race at Fiesta 2010- and was wondering if you would be interested in posting it. I planned on printing it, etc. for a gift but then decided to share with the rest of Gloucester. If you decide to post it I assume my name will be associated with it? It’s a keeper.

–cheers

Sam Hartson Reveals St Peter’s Fiesta Trailer II

Sam Writes-

Hey Joe,

Just starting to about to begin edits on the first cut, I thought I would take a quick break and cut together a trailer. Did it quick, played with the title at the end, some color grading, AND posted it in 1080i… very cool, haha.

Anyway, now that everything is uploaded, I’ll have a lot of bits and clips coming up that I can play with and send over to you that you can post

I’m working on getting Sam a ginormous screening of the finished movie once it’s finished.

Sam and his crew are going to be huge one day, mark my words.  His main on air reporter Seth is smart years beyond his age.  Looking forward to more from the boys!

2010 Seine Boat Race Start And Greasy Pole From the Top Of The Ferris Wheel

I brought the girls onto the Ferris wheel so we could capture the start of the senior seine boat race in pictures and video.  (Video coming)

Timing worked out perfectly as we were able to get down on the beach for when the KAOS hit the beach for the win and I could send in the picture and news right as it happened for our readers to have the news first!
