Painting and building are my practice.  I have devotion toward material, and I am as devoted to aerosol paints as I am to mud.  All material is flesh and connotes promiscuously within society and nature.  Then there is the problem of the impulse to order.  As an artist I need to still stuff.  Each piece acts as a halt—a submission, as a person, to the need to resist chaos.  What chaos?  Every artwork, every mark: a deceleration.  Every one a breaking.  Since, still, at the end of the day, at a turn, rupture is in the lull.  This is my protest.  I (am) matter too.

This is a Call Out to all Masters in the Craft of Deviled Egg Making

deviled egg competition

It is time for the World Renowned GMG Biennial Deviled Egg Competition.  Those who would like to have their special deviled eggs included in the competition, be featured on the blog, and go down in deviled egg history,  just bring ‘em on Sunday, June 9th at 9:30am at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3.  This is way bigger than Topsfield Fair competition and doesn’t cost anything to enter.  I’m specifically calling out Kathy Chapman, Gigi Mederos/Stevie Black, Paul Frontiero, Sue Lovett and Joanne Souza – competitors in the last Deviled Egg Competition; but all those deft in the art of deviled egg making are welcome.  Beware, I did not enter my world famous deviled eggs in the last competition to give people a fair chance.  Not so this year – I’ll be there with my eggs and will show no mercy.

We’ve assembled a distinguished panel of experienced deviled egg competition judges, including: Joey C., Ed Collard, Paul Morrison, Adam Bolonsky and newcomer, Richard Rosenfeld.  If you missed our first GMG Deviled Egg Competition in 2011, or are not sure how the judging works, you can see the distinquished panel at work here https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2011/08/22/2011-good-morning-gloucester-deviled-egg-competition/

People who don’t like deviled eggs or are not entering into the competition, feel free to bring along something non-egg related to share for Mug Up.

Kiss on the Neck for Good

kiss tote poster

Dear friends and family,

As many of you know, my little ice-cream business KISS on the Neck on Rocky Neck in Gloucester, MA takes tremendous pride not only satisfying the sweet-tooth but encouraging the do-good among its customers.

Last summer, this particular commitment had manifested through the sales of tote-bags, refashioned one by one from empty commercial rice-bags with all the proceeds going back to Senegal to support alternative income-generating projects for urban street-boys known as the Talibé. The overwhelming response to these bags in Gloucester exceeded my expectations and compelled me to return to Senegal this past winter to quarterback the growth of the project.

This film, a year in the making, will unveil our latest development, the K.I.S.S. Tote (Kindly Inspiring Sustainable Solutions) connecting KISS on the Neck Ice Cream with its mission abroad. The film shows how creativity, compassion and friendship has brought together different people and different concepts to inspire one truly innovative fundraising approach for the street-boys of Saint Louis, Senegal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbooTp4JA4Q

It is also with great excitement, I announce that the K.I.S.S. Totes have gone on sale this past Memorial Day Weekend at KISS on the NECK and will be available shortly at the Bookstore downtown. This year’s collection, the most mind-blowing yet, is the result of thousands of hours this winter, revamping the designs, incorporating I-friendly pockets, diversifying color selection, strengthening the staying-power and improving the quality and craftsmanship of every product. We also have introduced a small hand-bag, place-mats and boosted our production of wine-sleeves, all refashioned from discarded rice-sac material.

I’m proud of our progress this past year and I am confident you will find the products this summer both exceptionally appealing and downright practical. Furthermore, viewing this film, you will develop a much more concrete understanding how your purchases are being used to support a truly remarkable effort already at work in northern Senegal.

Lastly, I wanted to resound one last thank you to all those who contributed to the JOGGLING project. I crossed the Paris Marathon finish-line at 4 hours exactly, with all three balls, still rotating in motion! We raised nearly  $4,000 for Taliberte, the same organization featured in the film.

Thank you,
Richard

P.S. If anyone is interested in the French version of the film, please email me directly.

Mug Up – Let’s Do It Again!

grand opening mugup 2013_EJ and Charlie photos

These are some photos from last Sunday’s Grand Opening Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery – some great ones by Charlie Carroll and some by me.  The Grand Opening Mug Up was an amazing event, made even better by the fact that Joey was able to come and stay most of the morning.  Kudos, shout outs and thanks for Ann McKay for her delicious cheesecake with strawberries, Deb Schradieck for her awesome peanut butter and jelly muffins and egg and sausage casserole; Ann & Bob Kennedy for the infamous carmelized bacon and chocolate dipping sauce; Donna Ardizzoni for being the health conscious one to bring a bowl of fresh fruit salad (with whipped cream on the side); Greg Bover brought one of his famous GMG logo cakes (chocolate this time); Sister Felicia’s scicilian pizza and baba rum cakes made with Ryan & Woods Folly Cove Rum were a big hit; Pat Ciaramitaro came bearing coconut madelines and candy; James & Anna Eves brought pastries from Cafe Cecelia’s; Kim Smith adorned the place with fresh picked flowers from her garden; Alicia Cox sent over a batch of Maime’s Kitchens famous muffins and sweet rolls.  There were many other contributions to an amazing Mug Up, but as always, I lost track in the confusion.  We had a nice toast of champagne and pomegranate juice for Evelyn, and a good time was had by all.

Don’t miss the ongoing tradition when Mug Up happens again this Sunday, June 2 at 9:15am.  Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3.

Brenda Malloy’s Imagine Gallery on Rocky Neck has a fresh, new look this season.  While you’ll still find the cool, funky jewelry, bags and clothing she carries, she is focusing her gallery more on the great new work she created this winter.  Don’t miss a chance to experience the ever positive, bubbly Brenda and her innovative work.

A Memorial to Evelyn – Vandalized

evelyns memorial windowbox

I didn’t know what to do with the windowbox at the gallery this year.  I’d had enough of the flamingos and tiki man, and I didn’t want to deal with planting flowers.  So now it has become a memorial to Evelyn, complete with a standup paddleboard , which she loved doing so much, that I made from a flipflop.  She’ll be with us all season – at Mug Ups, paddleboarding, openings, dancing at Madfish and everything else we’ll do that she loved.  If anyone would like to add anything to the memorial – beach stones, shells, whatever for Evelyn, please feel free.

evelyn gone

I scheduled this post a fews days ago to run on Sunday afternoon.  This morning I arrived at the gallery to discover Evelyn and her paddleboard gone.  They had been glued in place, so they had been forcefully removed.  I try to live by Thumper’s mother’s teaching: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all”, but today I just can’t.  To the lowdown dirty rotten scumbag that stole Evelyn and her paddleboard from this memorial to her memory, bring them back.  If you return them, all will be forgiven and forgotten; don’t return them, and you have some serious shit karma to deal with.

Unfortunately, the person who did this most likely does not read Good Morning Gloucester because no FOB would do such a thing.  I assume it was someone coming from Madfish last night that didn’t get a good enough dose of Groove Therapy, and maybe too good a dose of alcohol to be thinking rationally or consciously.  If anyone leaving Madfish Grille last night saw or knows who did this, please let them know how badly they have hurt those of us  mourning the loss of Evelyn, and that they can make it right by returning the stolen items to her memorial.

Not to Miss Openings this Weekend

The Rocky Neck Gallery is looking incredible this year.  Don’t miss the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 25th from 6:00 – 8:00.  The same night, Carol McKenna will be having her Opening Reception from 5:00 – 8:00 in the red barn on Madfish Wharf.  Rocky Neck as a whole is looking amazingly good this year.  All the galleries have amped it up and are totally professional and look great.   So put Rocky Neck on your schedule of places to go and things to do this Memorial Day weekend.

ZBY gallery_liz sullivan_jamie oneill

Starting off the weekend, make sure you check out the new kids on the block at Madfish Wharf.  Liz Sullivan and Jamie O’Neill (and their little 2 year old Owen) will be having their Opening Reception at ZBY Gallery tonight (Friday) from 5:00-10:00pm at Gallery 6 (Joe Weiler’s old gallery and where Aquatro was last year).  They have some really fresh and exciting work that you don’t want to miss.  Come by and welcome them to Rocky Neck and Madfish Wharf.  Afterwards, pop into Madfish Grille and get your groove on with Groove Therapy who have a groovy sound, that will get you movin’ – a great way to warm yourself on a bleaky Friday night.  Yes, I said groovy, man.

Also, don’t forget Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Grand Opening Mug Up Sunday, May 26th from 9:00am until . . .

2013 Season Grand Opening Mug Up

Sunday, May 26th, 9:00-11:30 or so

77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3

All are invited and welcome – come for coffee, tea, mimosas, deviled eggs, cheesecake and more.  Check out new works by Joey Ciaramitaro, Deb Schradieck, Donna Ardizzoni, Fr. Matthew Green, Craig Kimberly, Kim Smith, E.J. Lefavour and guest artists, Judith Monteferrante and Roger Salisbury.

SNEAK PREVIEW OF WHAT’S IN STORE:  In addition to pomegranate mimosas, deviled eggs, key lime and regular cheesecake, special unidentified Sister Felicia treat and Deb Schradieck’s egg and sausage casserole, some early treats got delivered this afternoon.  Anne and Bob Kennedy can’t be here tomorrow, so they dropped off a batch of her carmelized bacon with chocolate dipping sauce.  Uncle Marty Daley was in the house and got to try some.  I bet he’ll be back tomorrow for more.  Then Deb dropped off a batch of peanut butter and jelly muffins.  I had to try one,  just to make sure they were ok for everyone.  They are to die for.  BEWARE!  This Grand Opening Mug Up is not for dieters.
