Chasing Ice Movie at Community Cinema to Benefit Maritime Gloucester
The award winning documentary Chasing Ice will be showing on Sunday, January 27th at 6pm at Cape Ann Community Cinema, as a benefit to support the marine science and environmental programs at Maritime Gloucester.
Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to gather evidence of climate change. Using time-lapse cameras, his videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. The trailer can be found at www.chasingice.com . It has been nominated for several independent film festival awards in the documentary and cinematography categories. The movie was recently awarded Best Documentary at the 22nd Annual Awards of the Environmental Media Association and received an academy award nominee for best original song.
Cape Ann Community Cinema is located at 21 Main Street in Gloucester. Tickets for the movie may be purchased at the door or in advance at http://capeanncinema.wordpress.com/advance-tickets/
Joey,
Happy New Year. As we finalize our public winter lecture series at Maritime Gloucester, I was hoping that I could use your community blog to ask viewers about potential speakers. Specifically, I am interested in hosting a series called “Welcome Back” where men and women who grew up on Cape Ann but no longer live here — and have pursued successful maritime, oceanography, fishing or marine sciences careers – would be asked to come back and speak at Maritime Gloucester. GMG Viewers and readers, please send your recommendations to Tom Balf at tbalf@maritimegloucester.org Thanks to all in advance.

Hi Joey,
The ‘Stock the Tank’ Collography exhibit at Maritime Gloucester is closing on Monday, and I would encourage people to go see it before it’s gone! It’s a pretty cool exhibit that was created by Camilla McFayden with help of community members who attended her collography workshop earlier in August. You can stand inside ‘Stock the Tank’ and experience an underwater world without getting wet! Check it out on Heritage Day at Maritime Gloucester (free admission all day) or during business hours through the weekend!
People can read more about it through our story at North Shore Kid or by checking out our Flickr Set
Enjoy!

Someone asked me for a couple of the must do things in G Town and I replied a sunset cruise on The Lannon, A Visit To Maritime Gloucester, The Cape Ann Museum and a mudiga steak bomb sandwich at Virgilios.
Bill O’Connor from North Shore Kid just so happened to send me in this little blurb about Maritime Gloucester-
Hi Joey,
One of the best things about Maritime Gloucester is that this time of year, there’s always something new to see. We stopped by on Monday and they had a couple of baby squid in the large tank. This one was only about 2 ½” long, and was doing his best to camouflage himself…
Enjoy!

Sign up now for Maritime Gloucester’s July 26th one-day "hand plane" workshop. Designed for woodworkers and active bodysurfers ages 12 and up, participants in the "hand plane" workshop will cut and shape their own handplane with traditional wordworking tools and techniques. Registration closes July 19th.
Here’s what the locals are saying. Award winning boat builder Harold Burnham says "If I was 18 and somebody dropped a tree off at my yard, I’d hold off on building a schooner. I’d make a hand plane first. I love body surfing." And famed Gloucester dorymaker Geno Mondello says: "I love the way GrainSurfboard combines traditional wood working tools and techniques with the sports of today. If my back could stand it, I’d be body surfing at Good Harbor after making my own hand plane!"
The attached poster includes a picture of a handplane in action. For more information go to www.grainsurfboards.com/classes
Hi Joey,
Gloucester Gig Rowers held our christening and launching party on Sunday evening, 8 Jul for our new 32′ Cornish Pilot Gig, custom-built for us by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Champlain Longboats School http://www.lcmm.org/education/champlain_longboats.htm . Here are a few pictures of our party party to celebrate the arrival of our new boat, and christen her. She can be seen moored at the Harriet Webster Pier at Gloucester Maritime, on Harbor Loop.
The boat’s name is the "Annie B", and one picture shows Annie Banks, her namesake and one of the chief founders of Gloucester Gig Rowers, breaking the traditional bottle of champaign over her bow.
Sorry this took a while – I needed to secure the club’s approval for all of these mug shots to be published before sending this. We would be grateful for any coverage which you could provide us!
All best,
Rick Isaacs
