Hoax Mayday Calls of Gloucester: What they look and sound like- From Adam Bolonsky

Here’s audio and video of the Coast Guard’s response to that hoax mayday call off Gloucester this summer.

Sector Boston had to issue a pan-pan, tying up personnel and channel 16.

Meanwhile a fully-crewed motorized lifeboat, one those brawny 47-footers docked at Solomon Landing, had to scour Cape Ann’s shoreline from Eastern Point to Milk and Thachers Islands.

Good evening, Joey!
Here are a few Gloucester autumn photos I took a day or two ago. The beautiful autumn afternoon light brings out the beauty of the foliage and the architecture:

Feast of Our Lady Aparecida- Gloucester’s Brazilian Community To Celebrate From Fr Matthew Green

On October 16, the Brazilian community of Gloucester will be celebrating the feast of their patroness, Our Lady Aparecida.  The actual day of the feast is Oct. 12, but we’ll be having a mini-procession, Mass, and celebration on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 6:30PM at St. Ann’s.  Our Mass in Portuguese will also have some things in English, so the English-speaking community is also welcome.  In preparation for the celebration, parishioners are meeting at houses of different families in the Brazilian communities to pray, sing, and share some food. Here’s a photo at one of the houses. The little statue of "Nossa Senhora Aparecida" is in the blue box in the middle:

Sundown, Moonrise, and Sunup Eastern Point Gloucester Video From Kim Smith

Kim writes-

Looking for butterflies on Eastern Point and videotaping the sun setting as the moon was rising. I passed Niles Pond on the drive home and stopped to admire the moonglow over the water. The following dawn brought flaming red skies, a cygnet plaintively searching for its family, and a startlingly large (at least 2 feet in height) Black-crowned Night Heron. Quawking loudly as the sun began to rise, there was a half dozen more roosting in a nearby tree.

FOB Cynthia Hill Takes Some Pics of Gloucester FROM The Seven Seas Navigator Cruise Ship

By now we’ve seen many fantastic cruise ship pictures of the boats but here’s what the passengers of these cruise ships see when they enter Gloucester.

Cynthia writes-

This is a wonderful ship, and what I think is the best cruise line afloat. Great fares – not inexpensive but completely inclusive – air, liquor, shore excursions, and gratuities! May seem high but when you look at what you spend on other lines with the nickel and diming that happens you actually save money. The only extra charges are for Canyon Ranch Spa Afloat….We’re not talking Carnival here, Regent is certainly high-end, but that said – it consistently offers the very best bang for the buck….did I mention all cabins are suites with walk in closets, a tub and shower in the bath, and almost all have balconies.

Thanks for letting me brag about this cool company!

Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything- Gloucester Based As Setting For Children’s Novel

DSC00310

Steve Cotler Writes-

Why does a California author who had only been to Gloucester one time when he was 11 years old decide to place his series of novels in your town?

My children’s book, Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything, the first in a series from Random House, chronicles the adventures of Ronald “Cheesie” Mack, a smart, funny, outgoing fifth grader who attends Rocky Neck Elementary School, my fictional stand-in for a Gloucester public school. I picked Gloucester as the setting for my novels because I wanted something quintessentially American, but not chain-stored and fast-fooded into looking just like every other town from North Dakota to Texas. I wanted a town with a unique personality…and Gloucester surely has that!

Last week I came back to Gloucester at the beginning of my book tour, spending one full day at East Gloucester School and another at Beeman Memorial School. I read selections, autographed books, and introduced hundreds of third- through fifth-graders to a new friend, Cheesie Mack.

So what’s my book about? It’s a story told by a kid who may not be a genius or anything, but he remembers everything that happened before, during, and after fifth-grade graduation, and he’s written it all down in his own unique and hilarious way—with lots of lists, drawings, and splenderful (that’s splendid plus wonderful) made-up words.

Cheesie’s tale is about more than his boring graduation ceremony and the not-so-boring party afterward; it’s also about his ongoing battle with his evil older sister, a Mouse Plot gone wrong, sow bugs, a haunted house, and his best friend Georgie’s discovery of a mysterious old coin that just might change their summer completely.

Cheesie—with a little help from me—writes about family, friendship, and tough choices in an authentically 11-year-old voice. I bet you’ll laugh out loud and end up making your own BLART sandwiches.

Check it out at http://www.stevecotler.com…or meet Cheesie himself on his own website: www.cheesiemack.com

Canadian writer, Ilona Biro From Huffington Post Travel Loved Her Time Here- Read On from Linn Parisi

Linn Parisi writes-

Following is the first of a few articles that Ilona Biro from AOL Canada (now Huffington Post Travel) is doing about the Seafood Trail.

She and her husband had a wonderful visit here, and they plan on coming back with their kids.  That’s what we like to hear!

The Seafood Trail will continue to make a difference in visitation, as does your generous participation in these FAMs.

When You’re in Boston, Hit the Seafood Trail

image

This summer, my husband and I were lucky landlubbers – lucky enough to land on Massachusett’s Seafood Trail, one of those culinary road trips that dreams are made of.
Just north of Boston, the Seafood Trail (unofficial slogan: "all seafood, all the time"), serves up everything you can imagine, from crispy fried clams, oysters, and fish ‘n chips to rich, lip-smacking chowder, steamers and mussels. From casual meals fresh off the boats to romantic four-star dinners, it can all be had here. In truth there’s so much amazing food along the Seafood Trail you could take a week to experience it all. We did our best to pack in as much as we could in a single day.We started in Gloucester, dubbed America’s Oldest Seaport and founded in 1623. It’s a tight-knit town that’s seen more than 10,000 of its souls perish while fishing on the plentiful seas, among them the men of the Andrea Gail, whose story was captured in the movie The Perfect Storm (which was also filmed here). A monument honouring those brave men takes pride of place along the seaside promenade leading into the town centre, and the seafaring tradition carries on today.
So before we got cracking on the lobster, we wanted to meet some of the locals. One local light, Clarence Birdseye, invented his flash freezing technique in Gloucester, and went on to fame and fortune. Fast forward to today and Gloucester is still a working fishing village, not a replica of something from the past. While Birdseye’s methods are still in use, we were curious to see the inner workings of the seafood industry today. First stop was Steve Connolly Seafood where we met up with foreman Romeo Solviletti. It’s a busy place, where fish was being gutted and filleted and lobsters cooked in huge pots, before being sent off to grateful diners – from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. Soviletti showed us a 14-pound lobster that he said was more than 100 years old. It looked like it belonged on the Seafood counter at Harrod’s, but Solviletti told us what happens to a lot of these monsters: "At Christmas, people come in and buy the biggest lobster they can get and set it free in the harbour. It’s a tradition for some people, and to be honest, you’re better off eating a smaller, younger lobster anyhow." Our mouths were watering by this time, but we wanted to do a little more exploring.
So we went to Joey’s place. One of Gloucester’s biggest boosters, Joey Ciaramitaro has run the Good Morning Gloucester blog for years, and has built the Web’s largest collection of mutant lobster photos, one blue lobster pic at a time. If you want to tap into what’s happening around town, you’ll find no better place. And if you want fresh lobster, straight off the boat, head to Joey’s dock and he’ll weigh it in for you with a huge smile. Extra bonus? Joey’s unvarnished opinions on the best seafood restaurants this side of Boston. Follow his advice and you won’t go wrong. His tip on lobster rolls: "Never, never put

Out of Africa – A Big Hit

Photos by E.J.

The Opening of the Out of Africa exhibit of photography and paintings by Judith Monteferrante, Rich Seeley and Roger Salisbury was a big hit, and an amazing grand finale guest artists exhibit opening for the first season of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck. We have never had so many people packed inside and waiting outside the Gallery for an event this season – and we’ve had many very well attended events. A gallery talk was scheduled for 6:00 pm, but the crowd was so thick that it was impossible for the artists to even consider giving a talk. Neighbors watching the flow of people in and out, estimated visitors throughout the evening at between 150 and 200 people. Kudos to the Gloucester Daily Times for putting the opening info on the front page of Saturday’s paper, as many people who came said they had learned about it from the Times. For those of you who wanted to see the exhibit but couldn’t make it to the opening, or those who came but couldn’t see the work because of all the people, the show will be up through October 6, so please come back and see the exhibit daily from noon to 8:00 pm. There are also videos of the animals and a digital frame with a slideshow of many of the photos taken but not physically exhibited in the gallery. This exhibit is truly a great adventure, an African safari that you can vicariously experience through these artists’ work. Don’t miss it.

Cordova Alaska Similarities To Gloucester from Skip Montello

Skip writes-

Joey,

I was up in Alaska doing some salmon fishing last week and flew in and out of Cordova and was smiling at the similarities with our own fishing centric port of Gloucester. It’s the end of the commercial salmon season up there and the fleet was in preparing for their voyage home to other fishing ports in Alaska and south along the Pacific coast. I have attached a couple of photos that highlight our sister port. Feel free to share.
