DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER BLOCK PARTY AUGUST 18 FEATURES BERKLEE TALENT & FIVE OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE STAGES!-

Summer’s best party starts at 6 pm Saturday August 18 on Main Street in Gloucester and it’s free!

Main Street is transformed into a strolling mall featuring al fresco dining; shopping until 11 pm; a Kids’ Town and multi-performances at five outdoor stages. Diverse bands, dance troupes and jugglers perform!

Center Stage the Block Party presents Berklee Jazz and Roots in Gloucester. The Berklee School of Music conducts master classes in Gloucester public schools and donates a music scholarship to a talented local student. Enjoy this excellent jazz and reggae group at 8 pm at the Sovereign Stage.

Shows and dining from 6 pm, Saturday evening. Bring a chair if you like and plan to dance in the street. The third jubilant Block Party will be held September 15.

27 Days to the Gloucester Schooner Festival From Al Bezanson

Hi Joey…The 28th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival will soon be upon us.  I wonder how many remember The Annual Great Gloucester Schooner Races of the late 60’s.  This is GREEN DRAGON after the circa 1969 race where we were decked out as fishermen.

Here was the deal for those races.  They handed you a little piece of paper with an “X” on it, a black & copy of a section of Gloucester Harbor.  Go anchor on that spot and when the boatload of old schoonermen comes by, hoist your sails and get underway ‘like fishermen.’  They would judge you for up to 25% of your score.  When everyone got underway we gathered by the breakwater where we got the gun to race up to Newcombs and back, boat-for-boat, no handicap as I recall.  Another 25% of your score.  Keep on going and anchor on your X.  No GPS or other instruments.  You found it with landmarks.  Only one try.  Eventually the old timers came back, a captain came aboard, stood at your foremast and figured out how close you were to X by shooting bearings with a sextant.  50% of your score.  Tough luck if the tide changed and you swung off it before the judges got to you.  First place boat went to Lunenburg to face the speediest schooner they had at the time.  These were all small schooners of 30 to 50 feet.

As for the crew in the photo.  All but one are still walking.  That’s my kid with the yellow hair.  First one to ID the lot gets a beer on me at the Cape Ann Brewery or the Gloucester House or wherever he can find me during the festival this year.

The website for the Gloucester HarborWalk is live!  www.ghwalk.org.  The HarborWalk is a Walk of Stories, reflecting that we are a City of Stories (really great stories.)  Hints of these stories are given along the Walk, which weaves in and out of the waterfront, up to City Hall, and around and down the brick sidewalks and great food of Main Street, back to St. Peter’s Park.  It is a Walk through the heart of Gloucester.  People might like to preview the stories on the new website. There are Stories and links to more stories, Walking Cinema, and Postcards from Gloucester!  Cambridge 7 Associates produced beautiful designs, and Lise Breen and Catherine Ryan found terrific stories, videos, art and connections from all in the community.  Take a look!
Mayor Kirk invites all to the ribbon-cutting on Thursday August 9th at 1 p.m. with the Lt. Governor, and to walk the Walk with her following the ceremony.

Thursday is “shopping local” day

Well, it is for me, at any rate. I like to walk down from the rectory to Stage Fort Park for the Farmer’s Market, and stop off in a store or two on Main Street along the way.  Here is today’s catch:

First, went to The Cave to get some “Manchego” cheese (front and center in the photo).  It’s a Spanish cheese made from goat’s milk. I bought it at the recommendation of the proprietor, Laura Cramer, to accompany a jar of Alexander Thompson’s tomato marmelade.  I got to try it in the store (with two other pairing options) and this one is a winner!

From there I headed down to the market.  I went looking for two of the other items in the photo above: Ma’s Brand bread and butter pickles, and maple syrup (from Northwoods Sugarworks in New Hampshire).  Thanks to the generosity of a couple at whose wedding I presided recently, I also had some extra cash to buy a beautiful hand-blown glass vase (on the left in the photo). It’s the work of Aron Leaman, a Gloucester native who has a shop down in Boston where he creates his glass art.

As I mentioned the last time I posted about the Farmer’s Market, I really enjoy buying there, because it supports small businesses and the local economy, and the enthusiasm of the sellers is (dangerously) contagious… I love to see their pride in their products.  Not the sort of experience you can have buying on-line, or even at local outlets of big chain stores.  They can offer great service and sometimes lower prices, but when possible, I like the direct interaction with people more closely involved with the actual production of whatever I’m buying.

P. S. I also picked up my customized “fire-breathing pickle-riding rainbow-jumping liger” teeshirt, which the folks at the G33K store were kind enough to make for me! I’ll post a photo soon…

Yesterday’s sunrise with a rainbow in the west

These photos were taken at around 5:35-5:45AM yesterday, from the room of the rectory at St. Ann’s Church (Holy Family Parish).  I should have shot a panorama that included both the sunrise and the rainbow, but it was too early for my brain to think that clearly…

To New Yorkers, Edward Hopper is likely to evoke visions of moody nighttime urban scenes. But the painter created some of his most famous work in the bright seaside town of Gloucester, Mass., on Cape Ann, where he spent time in the 1920s. The photographer Gail Albert Halaban has been locating the original houses in Hopper’s paintings there and taking pictures of them as they look today. Greta Bagshaw, whose husband’s family has owned the ‘‘Mansard Roof ’’ since 1962, is accustomed to the attention. ‘‘Not infrequently we’ve seen people who set up easels in our backyard to paint it,’’ Bagshaw says. ‘‘We know it’s time to put up the awnings each year when we’re eating on the porch and we turn around and see a big tour group watching us eat dinner.’’

Local Artist & Artisans Sought 54th Annual 2012 Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar

Summer is in full swing, and that means the Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar is only a few weeks away. 

The Gloucester Downtown Association is happy to announce that they will continue to coordinate the efforts on behalf of Main Street Merchants and the City of Gloucester in celebration of 54th Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar.  This annual three day event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday: August 2nd, 3rd & 4th from 9:00 am to 5:00pm each day rain or shine.

Local artist and artisans are invited and encouraged to participate alongside the resident merchants in the event the draws thousands of people to Downtown Gloucester each year.
Come help create an event that is A True Celebration of our Downtown and showcase our history having America’s Oldest Art Colony.

Hi Joey,

Gloucester Gig Rowers held our christening and launching party on Sunday evening, 8 Jul for our new 32′ Cornish Pilot Gig, custom-built for us by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Champlain Longboats School  http://www.lcmm.org/education/champlain_longboats.htm .  Here are a few pictures of our party party to celebrate the arrival of our new boat, and christen her.  She can be seen moored at the Harriet Webster Pier at Gloucester Maritime, on Harbor Loop.

The boat’s name is the "Annie B", and one picture shows Annie Banks, her namesake and one of the chief founders of Gloucester Gig Rowers, breaking the traditional bottle of champaign over her bow.

Sorry this took a while – I needed to secure the club’s approval for all of these mug shots to be published before sending this.  We would be grateful for any coverage which you could provide us!

Filmed at Friday night’s formal opening ceremony. After shooting the greasy pole contest  I raced back to my car, which was parked all the back to I4-C2, to lessen the load of tripod and video camera. I grabbed my still camera thinking I would only take snapshots. I wish I had kept the video camera with me, but attempted to shoot video with the Fujifilm x100. The x100 unfortunately does not have IS, or image stabilization, nonetheless the colors are good.
