Chronicle producer’s new book cover is Motif #1

You may know Ted Reinstein from the award-winning TV show Chronicle on Channel 5.

I’ve been a fan for years and  was lucky enough to meet Ted when he produced Chronicle’s feature of Gloucester in 2007 right after Celebrate Gloucester and the opening of Cruiseport.

After covering every corner of New England for 16 years, Ted has made good on his claim, “I have enough stories to fill a book!” Now he’s about to release what National Geographic Traveler has named one of “The Best Travel Books of Spring.”  And look at what’s on the cover!

Ted sent me a pre-release copy of his chapter on Cape Ann, which he aptly titled The Other Cape.  Here’s how it begins:

ReinsteinObviously written from the heart, Ted describes Gloucester as “America’s most authentic, enduring working waterfront.”  The chapter is filled with quotes by–and stories about–local fishermen, artists, photographers and others along with some excellent photos.

This captivating, well-written book isn’t just a travelogue.  It’s a gem that everyone who lives here and cares about this place would want to own.  New England Notebook hasn’t been released yet, but you can pre-order a copy now — right here.

Ted tells me he’s planning to come to The Other Cape to do a reading at some point.  We’ll be sure to let you know when and where as soon as it’s scheduled.  Perhaps you can get your book signed!

O’Maley Soda Bottle Garden From Roger Davis

Roger Davis Submits

Last Friday, the O’Maley Middle School cafeteria served lettuce in its salad bar… and students actually ate some!  The real news is that this lettuce was grown by the sixth grade students of Island House… in the school library!  Under the direction of science teacher Roger Davis, the students created planters out of two-liter soda bottles, linked together in a siphon-fed watering system.  A three-liter bottle supplies the whole class’s set of lettuce planters, and the siphon passes the water from one planter to the next.  The plants absorb the water by cappilary action, so the plants never need to be watered.  With the garden and water all held in these containers, the lettuce bed was set in the school library, whose large sunroof gives the plants plenty of light.  Six weeks later, the students harvested the first cutting, with more still to come.  With this project students are learning basic plant science, indoor or container gardening techniques, and the principles of water and air pressure used in the siphon water system.  Seeds and soil for this project were donated to the school by Wolf Hill Garden Center.

Sargent House Museum Presents “Ornaments of the Mind” April 14 at 2pm

Sargent House Museum
Presents: “Ornaments of the Mind: Needlework and a New England Girl’s Education”
49 Middle St., Gloucester
Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 2PM
Laura Johnson, Associate Curator of Historic New England, will present a lecture on “female academies” of the early 19th century founded by women like Judith Sargent Murray, Judith Saunders and Clementina Beach.  Girls learned the “useful and ornamental arts” of reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as painting in oils and watercolors on fancy surfaces and plain and fancy needlework.
The Sargent House Museum recently acquired an excellent example of this fancy needlework, presented to Nancy Parsons Sargent by her nieces Anna Williams and Julia Maria Murray, Judith Sargent Murray’s only child.  The work depicts Cornelia, a model of what the Romans called “civic” motherhood, with her children, exclaiming that they were her real treasures.  Judith Sargent Murray, a product of the Enlightenment, and the American Revolution, was one of the first writers to extoll the virtues of “republican motherhood,” the practice of mothers teaching their children the new ideals and values of the early American republic.  The needlework was handed down through the Sargent family and donated by Virginia Pleasants.  Her niece will discuss the Sargent family connections.
The public is welcome at the lecture and at the public unveiling and installation of the piece that will follow.
A free will donation is suggested; members will be admitted free of charge.

TAG Program Info Session April 3rd At The Hive!

Hi Joe,

I am the assistant director of a new teen art program called the Teen Artist Guild. The Director, David Brooks, and I have been fortunate to receive funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Youth Reach Grant.

The TAG program gives motivated students between the ages of 13-19 the opportunity to develop skill in the arts in the form of paid work and trains them to utilize their creativity to provide services to the community. To start off we will be taking on 15 student artists in the spring, and hopefully by the summer, be able to increase the number of artists, possibly even double.

TAG members will be paid an hourly wage working to provide artistic services to local business, such as painting store front windows, creating murals, or even printing t-shirts. TAG member will also be giving the opportunity to sell their own artworks through TAG. 50% of the commission goes back into the TAG program itself, while the other half goes to the artist, where they’ll be encouraged to donate 10% to a charity of their choice.

The program info session will be April 3rd at The Hive at 6:00 PM. The day is designed to share the program values and for students to get all the information needed to apply. On April 10th all applications will be in students will be notified by the 12th and will start April 16th. Students will meet Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 6-8pm.

Dinner Dealer The Interview

If you have some type of organization that does an annual fundraiser having your kids sell Dinner Dealer Decks is a total no-brainer.

http://www.dinnerdealer.com/

Think about this-  Instead of your kid selling raffle tickets for $25 a pop and the person they sell them to begrudgingly holds it against you and hates you for putting you on the spot by sending their bratty kid to hit you up for $25 which they will probably never win anything from, the kid sells them a Dinner Dealer Deck.  The supporter pays $25 but after just a couple uses they guaranteed get their money back and then after that they continue to make money from the savings in the deck.   Out of the sale of the deck the organization keeps $10.  The restaurant that offers the great savings gets the business from you coming into their restaurant.

Wins all the way around and best of all your kid is selling something that is actually going to make the supporter money in savings!

Total, complete no-brainer!

Over $300 Savings In Each Deck

What’s more fun than shuffling through a deck of cards full of great discounts to local restaurants? Brand new to the North Shore, Dinner Dealer is dishing out deals to residents in and around the region. Not only will diners get great savings — over $300 — with these cards, they will enjoy dining at a great variety of local restaurants. Retailing for only $25, Dinner Dealer is designed to stimulate commerce within the community and inspire consumers to dine out, dine local, and dine often. It’s a win-win for both the diners and these delicious establishments. Additionally, $1 will be donated back to a local food pantry for each deck sold.

Decks can be purchased online at www.DinnerDealer.com. Don’t forget to get mom a deck for Mother’s Day! And, be sure to tell them Joey sent you.

Love the small discreet size of the decks, easy to slip in your pocket or keep in your glove box or for the ladies inside your purse.

Don’t Be Shocked But That is a Wolf at Your Door.

Everyone knows that coyotes have moved onto Cape Ann and Cape Cod but did you know they are actually a new hybrid with the eastern wolf? The DNA typing of this new species is just in its infancy. Mostly using mitochondrial DNA to get a rough understanding but now that genomic sequencing is much cheaper a more detailed picture is forming. Some coyotes trapped have come up as 90% eastern wolf DNA! These hybrids, I’ll call them coywolf from now on, are bigger than coyotes. They are very sociable, live in family packs and can have a range of ten square miles. That is a decent chunk of Cape Ann. I would guess though if the food is plentiful they would hang in one region near their den.

Should you be fearful of these coywolves? You shouldn’t. In fact we should be happy they are here. They fill the niche that the wolf filled here for centuries and now she is back. They eat deer, mice, rabbits, all those small animals. The deer and mice are key. Lyme disease has a life cycle that explodes when deer and mice populations increase. Knocking down both of these populations will keep Lyme disease in check.

wolfie
Yes, the coywolves will eat your cat but your cat should not be out there anyway. Feral and outdoor cats eat more than 3 billion birds in the US annually. You can’t blame them. They have been trained to do this since ancient egyptian times protecting granaries from vermin. They don’t even eat them just killing one bird after another. Keep your cat inside and let these coywolves keep the population of Lyme disease plagued vermin like deer and mice down to tolerable levels. They are a perfect fit for Cape Ann. They don’t like to eat birds. And if you find a dead coywolf I need just a very small blood sample to run a genetic haplotype test to see how much of a wolf she was. But please do not hunt them. They are doing us all a big favor. Imagine going for a hike in Dogtown and having no fear of being covered by disease ridden deer ticks. If you’ve had Lyme disease you should kiss a wolf on the lips for moving into your neighborhood. They might even take out a fishercat or two.

If the genetic testing of the coywolves on Cape Ann come up as over 80% wolf DNA we can drop the hybrid coywolf name. That is a wolf.
