Hi Joey-

My boyfriend (now fiance!) Bradley and I really enjoy your blog and we LOVE Gloucester (we definitely have the wheels turning for a relocation from Boston one day). Thought I would share a Gloucester story from this past Sunday..
We often come up on the weekends to hang out and one of the things we (mostly me) like to do is look for sea glass at Pavilion beach. That’s where we were this past Sunday when Bradley called me over to look at something in the sand. Just sitting on a rock was a beautiful shiny sparkly ring. I was a little slow..even thinking aloud that someone must have lost their ring..doh! Anyway it was for ME and we got engaged right then and there! We were super lucky that local, Amy Clayton happened to be on the beach and she snapped some pictures for us! Here our a couple of our favorites ..

Endicott College’s Gloucester Campus To Offer Associates Degrees Beginning This January

Beginning this January, Endicott College will begin offering an Associates degree program at our new campus at 33 Commercial Street. This 2-year program, custom developed to meet the needs of Gloucester’s youth, will be comprised of five courses per semester and run from 9AM-Noon Monday through Thursday, and every other Friday. Financial aid is available for full time students. Applications are now being accepted for the upcoming semester. Gloucester Health Dept: Hard-Freeze Confirmation Mosquito Borne Illness Threat Virtually Eliminated

According to the National Weather Service, all areas of Massachusetts (EXCEPT Suffolk
County and the Cape and Islands) and including Gloucester, experienced a hard frost/hard freeze
on Friday night, October 12-13. A copy of the map can be found at the following website:

While individual mosquitoes may have survived in isolated sheltered areas, the risk of mosquitoborne
illness should be virtually eliminated at this time in areas where the hard frost occurred.
Given the reduced risk of mosquito-borne illness, programs may resume scheduling
outdoor activities between the hours of 5 pm and 8 am. However, we advise that people
continue to take certain precautions when going outdoors. This includes applying insect repellant
and wearing clothing such as long sleeves, long pants and socks.

Alice Gardner Discovers Scout Vintage Finds On East Main

As I was driving home from the Rocky Neck Cultural Center where we had the Cape Ann Painter and Photographer Group this morning, I noticed a woman putting out a sign on the sidewalk which said "Hand Made Hats." I stopped to investigate and met owner Karen King of" Scout Vintage Finds." She makes amazing hats from special imported felt and uses beautiful antique hat forms to shape the hats -all one of a kind. They are amazing.  Her friend Shana who dropped in agreed to model a few hats! She also has a lot of interesting antiiques. Karen said that her shop is open Thursday – Monday. .. a must see shop! 186 East Main Street, Gloucester.  978-290-05533    Alice Gardner

Turbine Offloading From The Barge Complete- Pic From Fred Bodin

One of the three wind turbine blades is lowered down onto the parking lot at Cruiseport Gloucester. By the time I finished my dinner at the Seaport Grill, they had all been moved and the Chem Caribe was cleared off. I was told that the barge had to leave tomorrow, because the dock was reserved for another vessel. So all that needs to be done at Cruiseport is haul the remaining cylindrical tower sections and the blades to the erection site in Blackburn Industrial Park.

At Cruiseport Gloucester, almost everything is off the barge, except for three 160 foot long wind turbine blades. In the foreground are conical tower sections.

The blades will be offloaded later today or tomorrow. Trucking them up to Blackburn Industrial Park will be quite a sight to see.

Getting ready behind the Cruiseport. I’ve learned that offloading a mega cargo like this takes a long, long time. The cylinder is part of the turbine tower, and it is made of steel.

FRIENDS OF SEACOAST FROM TOMMY LATTOF

Yesterday I wrote about how thankful I am for the care that my dad receives at Seacoast Nursing Home. Today Tommy Lattof forwards this from the Friends of Seacost-

The Friends of Seacoast monthly activities included taking, 12 residents on a rotating basis, in a special van with nursing staff to the Gloucester House for lunch last week. Wednesday of this week 12 more are going for a clam or lobster roll at the Seaport Grille.

On October 2 we had Baby Farm Animals come to two floors and entertain the residents.

On October 9 we did a dinner/show where we brought in specialty food from area restaurants and provide entertainment.  This was extremely popular and everyone who attended had a great time.

All of the expense for these events are paid for by the Friends of Seacoast.

We are looking for people to bake cookies for our holiday fair on Saturday, December 1, 2012.  Anyone wishing to help should contact Alison Cox at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. 978 283 0300 ext 102.

We meet every month on the second Tuesday from 6 PM to 7 PM. Anyone wishing to come and be part of this great group of volunteers is most welcome.

They are making some pretty special things happen at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the residents.

I don’t have any friends that are without a job.  All of the restaurants we service are having great years and have told me that over the past 5 years things have gotten progressively better.  The malls are always packed.

I don’t see a ton of for sale signs around town on houses like you normally do when housing goes to shit.

So I ask you, do you feel like the economy is horrible based on what you see around you?  I’m not talking about the national 8% number I’m talking you personally?  Do you feel like the economy around you is horrible?

Jobless rate for city dips to 6.1%

By Times Staff Gloucester Daily Times

Gloucester’s unemployment rate, holding steady throughout the summer above the 6-percent mark, inched back down to 6.1 percent in August from a 6.2-percent figure in July, according to the latest city and town jobless statistics from the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

And the tenth-of-a-point decrease this time comes with supporting figures showing that more people landed local jobs in August amid a growing summer workforce — with 250 more people working in August of this year, than had been in August 2011, when the city’s jobless rate was pegged at 7.4 percent.

The Problem with Catch Shares Video From GoodFoodnH2O

I remember my dad telling me when I graduated from college and was at the crossroads of either coming down the dock or continuing my education to become an Economics professor.  He said- “Joey if you come down the dock, there’s always gonna be fish and they’re always gonna need a place to offload them.”  Never back then could he or I imagine how much they would have hyper-consolidated the industry and reduce the number of fishermen in our harbor by 80%.

So in the middle of composing this post Pete Mondello pulled up to load bait to go lobstering.  Pete doesn’t have any fishing permits any more and he tells me the story of what his father Joe the cobbler said to him- “Pete if everything goes to shit you’ll still be able to go catch some fish for dinner.”  Never did he dream back then that if he landed fish he’d get thrown in jail.

What our town was built on- the spirit of the independent fisherman who could get in the business by filling out a sheet of paper for a permit and get out of it as much work as he wanted to put in.  Now all that is over.  No young guy can afford the millions it will take to get started up in this business as a fisherman and within our lifetime we will see the complete transformation into few large fishing conglomerates from hundreds of fishing families supporting thousands.
