Statement From Police Chief Leonard Campanello

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your call this a.m.

We received a call about 6:20am from a credible source indicating that a rumor was circulating that there was a statement made by a student of bringing a handgun to the High School today. There was also a rumor that threats of bringing a gun to school today were written on a wall in the bathroom of the High School. The Police Department immediately responded, checked the school, began investigating and contacted school officials and the Mayor.

As it stands now, we will have a police presence for the time being at the High School, both to continue to track down the source of these rumors and to dispel any fear that students, parents, and teachers may have. The school is open, quiet, classes are in session as normal and school admin is on scene as well. I am told by the super that if students are apprehensive, there are guidance counselors on scene to speak with them.

Senior students are raising money by being able to take pictures with Santa at lunch yesterday and today. Taking a picture with Santa is a great way for the high school to get into Christmas spirit and to raise money for the senior class!

DECA students from GHS are selling their scarfs for a great deal of only eight dollars to support their DECA competition this coming January. These DECA students are selling them to other students at lunch last Friday.

Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort – Community Clothing Drive  -  at Gloucester High School Field House

A Community Clothing Drive to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy will be held Monday, November 26 through Friday, November 30th at the Gloucester High School Field House.

Hiltz Moving and Storage has generously offered to transport the donations that are generously collected locally to a community in New Jersey.  Hiltz Disposal is also a contributor to our effort.

Items that have been requested are: winter clothing (men’s, women’s and children’s), Socks (all sizes), winter coats, hats, mittens, gloves, winter shoes and boots (all sizes), blankets, disposable diapers, baby wipes, towels (cloth not paper), face cloths, first aid kits, work gloves (heavy duty), flash lights, batteries, sleeping bags and pads, contractor(heavy) trash bags, packing boxes (with flaps so that it can be sealed shut), packing tape, and black magic markers.

The hours of drop off at the Gloucester High School Field House are as follows:

Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 2 pm daily and also 6 pm to 9 pm evenings.

Photos from the Relay for Life “Luminaria” Ceremony

Last night I stopped down for the Luminaria ceremony of the Relay for Life at Gloucester High School in the Newell Stadium.  On one hand, I wanted to be there in memory of friend and family members who have died from cancer (including my maternal grandmother and a high school classmate). On the other, I knew it would be a great opportunity for some inspirational photography…

Here’s an explanation from the Relay for Life website (with my photos from yesterday):

“Simple white luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every local Relay For Life event. Each one is personalized with the name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer.  Each luminaria candle represents a person.  They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers and so much more!

As the sun sets at a Relay For Life event, luminaria lining the track illuminate the night and a hush falls over the event that had been filled with the sounds of celebration. Relay For Life participants, survivors and caregivers then gather together for the Luminaria Ceremony to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor those who have battled the disease.

As participants walk the track lined with luminara bags in reflection, a caregiver who has lost a loved one may find comfort from a fellow caregiver who has faced a similar loss. Meanwhile, a survivor gains hope and strength from others who have followed the same journey and survived. All resolve to keep fighting to save more lives so no more luminaria bear the names of those lost to the disease.”

I don’t know the details of how the relay works, but there are clearly different teams who are camping out.  They set up campsites with different themes and decorations. Here are a couple:

Dean Salah To Host Gloucester High School Football Program At Georges Coffee Shop Saturday Morning 104.9

Hey Joey, hows things, the site seems to be booming and the summer ahs obviously kept you hopping!!

  I am hosting radio station 104.9 on Sat. morning, they are doing a live show from 8 to 9 out of the shop.

It is to kick off the high school football season, they will interview Paul Ingram as well as the Gloucester

football captains, I don’t know if it is too late to get this on the blog but if you can that would be great, also

GARFISH performs at the Relay for Life of Cape Ann Benefit

Just got this from Gary Hiltz-

Relay For Life of Cape Ann welcomes the return of Garfish. Cape Ann’s own classic rock band Garfish will be returning to the stage Friday June 19 from 6:45 to 8:45pm at the Gloucester High School. The band is proud to be able to donate their time for this great cause. Its really inspiring to see the dedication of all these team members who work year round to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Garfish is honored to be able to provide some upbeat music to aid and entertain the walkers in this 18 hour event.

Communities Join Together To End Domestic Violence

In Harm’s Way is a dramatic presentation about domestic violence, featuring true stories of courage and healing. Using performance art to educate, empower and heal, In Harm’s Way expresses the pain and isolation experienced by victims of domestic abuse, and celebrates the strength and resilience of survivors.

The cast of In Harm’s Way is divided evenly among youth and adults. There are up to 50 cast members on the stage at one time. The adult cast is drawn from high-profile members of the community (cast list available upon request). Because the play is a dramatic reading, with script in hand for the final performance, rehearsal time is minimal. Cast members attend two readings, receive a script, and then return for the final dress rehearsal and performance. Without exception, everyone who has participated in In Harm’s Way has asked to be involved again.
