Pick Your Own Apples at Russell’s Orchard

It’s that time of year. Joey in 2008: “Have you picked apples this year?” If you haven’t now is the time. Russell’s Orchard in Essex (Follow signs for Crane’s Beach) has trees loaded with crispy tasty apples that just taste ten times better than apples that have been sitting around in a grocery store. You think Gaia are flavorful? Taste one right off the tree.

If you have small children who need to pick their own pumpkin, take a hayride out to the fields, eat cider donuts fresh out of the machine, or pet a bunny you need to go next weekend to Russell’s Orchard. Click here for how Pick your Own. Hayrides are thrown in free on the weekends.

Find them on Facebook.

If you are an old curmudgeon who thinks a hayride is just for kids think again. The tractor drivers are comedians.

I take this guy’s photo and as he pulls even with me, “Hope my face didn’t break your camera!”

Go early on the weekend as this is very popular although Russell’s is set up to handle a crowd. Plenty of parking and plenty of stuff to do. I didn’t even make it to the winery. This time. Meanwhile I have homemade apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on the menu this week. 298 days until the Blackburn Challenge. Plenty of time to fit into the kayak.

Open 9-5 every day. You miss out on the hayride if you go during the week.

Salty Dog Day at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum by Lily

Hi!  My name is Lily and I want to tell you about Salty Dog Days at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Saturday.

I went to the event because my Nana was a judge in the Dog Costume Parade Contest and I thought it would be fun.  When we got there, there was a dog water rescue demonstration going on:

I didn’t take this picture quite fast enough but it is a dog in the water.

and this is Salty, another one of the water rescue dogs:

This is Parker–he is a Newfoundland–and was part of the water rescue program

I went up on to the land and saw a cute beagle named Daisy:

Then the parade started.  There were only two dogs dressed in costumes but there were lots of dogs in the parade without costumes.  The winner of the of the costume contest was Black Dog the Pirate:

and the beautiful twin golden retrievers Dylan and Gladys who won the prize as the prettiest pair of dogs in the parade:

and Monk the St. Bernard puppy won for the cutest puppy:

And here is a picture of people looking at Harold Burnham’s frame for his new boat.  I got to sign the frame

The Salty Dog Days was really fun and educational–and I took a tour of the shipyard too.  My great grandfather Wendell Lufkin worked in that shipyard a very very long time ago.

I hope you like my post–be sure to leave a comment if you do.  Lily

New Businesses In Essex

From Deej Viau-

Dear Joey,

Our good friend has recently opened two new businesses on Cape Ann.
Attached are some photos of two logos Bob designed and the signs he built and installed for our friend Jane Linland. Body in Balance Pilates and Soul Expressions….gifts to nurture the soul both located at 144 Main Street in Essex. Great location, plenty of parking, beautiful new studio, unique and affordable gifts. It really is fantastic. Folks should check it out. I worked for Jane for ten years at her great pre school Lil’ Sprouts which is right down on Scott’s Way also in Essex. She is a great person. Three wonderful businesses.

Thanks so much,
Best,
Deej Viau

Another Where Zat Clue

Joey guessed “somewhere in Essex” which is correct. So where in Essex is it?

(This video was done with my new camera. Not bad. Except for my shaky hands!)

Here’s the first clue.

Bill Staines to perform at One World Coffee House on Jan. 30

Folk musician Bill Staines will perform Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at the One World Coffee House at the First Universalist Church, 59 Main St., Essex.

Donation is $15. For reservations, call 978-325-3252.

Singing mostly his own songs, Bill Staines has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances.

His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon, the on-the-road truckers, or the everyday workers that make up this land.

Lily Represents at today’s high tide walk!

Ok, so maybe Lily isn’t swimming in the high tide in a bikini and January with the ice floes, but she is representing!

Lily represents with the heavy equipment replacing the sea wall on the causeway in Essex…….

She walks the line, and represents!

And Lily has her “sticka”………………she can park here!

Not too much launching ramp business today in Essex

I think that red dumpster at Essex Marina across the way might be floating!

That dog walks on water!

Would be easy to launch a new schooner today, Harold–I think the water is IN the building!

Today’s view from the bridge across the causeway

So glad Lily and I shoveled out so we could drive down town and check out today’s scenery.  I remember walking down to the causeway from the other side of town when I was a little girl and lived in “South Essex.”   Lil thought it was “so cool” to go down there, walk in the middle of the road and see Mother Nature in action!

Here’s to Snow Days!

When we were heading into Boston Harbor, the Roseway sailed by us. DSC_1922 [Desktop Resolution]Beautiful as always! Always nice when she visits Gloucester!

The Roseway is a wooden gaff-rigged schooner launched on November 24, 1925 in Essex, Massachusetts. She is now restored and listed as a National Historic Landmark.

She is currently operated by World Ocean School, a non-profit educational organization based in Camden, Maine.

Essex at Dawn- 4:30AM 6/26/09

This is the Essex River and Hog Island, directly across the street from where the Adam Sandler movie “Grown Ups” was being filmed last week.  I went early in the morning and set up the tripod at 4:30 AM to take this dawn picture and to get a feeling for how accessible the set of Woodman’s was going to be.  I didn’t feel like getting tossed from the set like the day before.  So as I saw folks coming and going and I took this picture, I popped my head in to see the crew of people working like mad to put the inside of Woodman’s back together after filming all last week inside the building.
