Black Crowned Night Heron At The Dock

DSC04364

I guess these guys reside in Taiwan as well-

From The Website Birding In Taiwan

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a medium-sized (60 cm), stocky heron with black crown and back, creamy white undersides and gray wings.  In breeding plumage it has two long, thin white plumes on its nape.  Its legs and feet are yellow, its bill black and its iris red.  Juvenile birds are brown overall, with white spotting on the back, a buffy breast with heavy brown streaking and a yellow iris.

The Black-crowned Night Heron uses a wide variety of wet habitats including fresh, brackish or salt water, particularly areas with aquatic vegetation on shallow rivers, lagoons, ponds, lakes, swamps and marshes. It also frequents human habitats such as pastures, rice fields, canals and fish ponds.  Its food is extremely varied, and it will use whatever is available, including fish, frogs, tadpoles, turtles, snakes, lizards, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, small rodents, eggs and chicks of other bird species.  It feeds mainly at dusk and at night, but is often seen in the daytime flying between locations or roosting in trees.  The Black-crowned Night Heron breeds in colonies and may reuse its nest of sticks, rushes and reeds in successive years.  Its nest is usually placed in trees or bushes, but may also be in reedbeds or on cliff edges.  The female usually lays 3-5 eggs, and does most of the incubating.

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a common resident of Taiwan at low elevations.

Smoopie From Tiny Island Beach Glass Sends In Some Horrible Pictures

The GMG Float from 2010 and The Captain Joe and Sons Float From 2008.  I was just talking to Ed Collard about how much I’m looking forward to bringing the 2011 GMG Float to the next level.  With Sista Felicia as lead design and brother In Law Barry and Jeremy Frost On construction I’m pretty sure it’s a safe bet!

Beautiful Industry Monkey Balls- Photos

Our fishermen call them Monkey Balls but they are more commonly referred to by marine biologists as “Sea Squirts”.   Sea Squirt is a pretty apt description as every time one gets squished they seem to find a way to squirt you right in the eye. I took these photos Saturday morning just as they came out of the water.

Beautiful Industry- The Winch

I’m not gonna lie Mr Winch.  I’m not going to miss you when I finally get some vacation time.

DSC00103Bobby Ryan Writes-

I’m not usually a romantic, nor do I usually attribute feelings to inorganic items, but…
Could it have been Capt. Joe who actually bolted that unit down? That stand had to be built. Look at it. The paint color was known as “Battleship Grey”. Everything wooden on the waterfront was “Battleship Grey”. If you owned a boat somethings were orange or green. Extra paint left from painting the mast and hull. Everything iron had a coat of Red Lead under the grey. There must be 30 coats on this winch. Usually painted on during Fiesta week when the fleet was tied up. How about that “___ head”? Is that brass? How shiny it was when new? Can you imagine how proud the “Skipper” was when he first brought up those bags of whiting knowing he made a move to be “on shore” in order to better feed and care for his family? This time of year I remember one of the last things Slug would have me do before closing up for Christmas Eve was to go over to Capt. Joe’s. I would come back with plates of food. Some cooked, some not. At the time, when it was more personal and not so en vogue, I did not fully understand about the 7 fishes, but they were delicious.
Joey, you do not need to post this, I just wanted to let you know what I see in that old winch and to let you know there are others having thoughts of your family.
Buon Natale!

Seal Sunning Itself At The Dock

Yesterday Ed Collard spotted a seal sunning itself on a camel at our dock.  The very camel that the Mellissa K ties up to.  It was incredibly relaxed even as Ed and I approached it to take pictures and videos.

153 Miles and and 18 Hour Steam Dave Jewell and Crew Land Two Fat Bluefin Tuna

Heading out a couple of days ago Dave and his crew head out for an 18 hour steam of  153 miles to catch themselves a nice pay day. One 800 lber and one 650 these tuna will command a nice price in Japan.

When Dave headed out he was a bit nervous because where they have to go to catch these fish it’s a long way out and there’s no place to run and hide if a storm whips up.  It is where there are warm ocean currents and cold water intersecting and it can produce nasty storms seemingly out of the blue and without much warning.

Video coming tomorrow

1 in 100 Million, Huh? Second Albino Caught In A Year By A Captain Joe and Sons Lobsterman

John Todd Writes In-

Joe,

I forgot to mention when I offloaded yesterday that I had caught an albino lobster in the harbor. I took a few photos with my phone that I thought you might like to see and maybe post on the GMG page. I was going to bring it in but just after I took the last photo a homie dove down and grabbed it off the table, probably thinking it was something other than a lobster due to it’s color. It dropped it just off the back of the boat and out of reach, although I think it was short anyhow. I looked it up and they said it is as rare as 1 in 100 million. I know you had one a while back from Mike Tupper so perhaps they aren’t so rare or they just like to come to Gloucester for the hospitality!

Boston Massacre Come Down To Our Dock To Shoot Their 2011 Calendar Pics

If you haven’t been to watch a Roller Derby Bout featuring our own Boston Derby Dames then you have missed out on watching the number one dollar for dollar entertainment value in the State of Massachusetts.  Roller derby is fast paced, action packed, semi violent, the skaters are friendly and you don’t need to be a rocket science to enjoy the sport.  For more info about the Boston Derby Dames click here

We’ve covered The Boston Derby Dames for the past two years first finding out about it through Krush Puppy, a local who kills it on the flat track!  Once I went to my first bout I was hooked.  So when Krush asked if they could shoot the 2011 calendar down at the dock I told her I think it would be a perfect fit.  The team’s image is tough and blue collar and the mascot is Pinchy McMasshole a giant foam lobster- what place would be better than right here at Captain Joe and Sons!
