Online Registration Now Open for 2012 Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race on Cape Ann in Massachusetts

Third annual scenic New England road race, organized by DMSE Sports, set for August 19

image

Online registration is now underway for the third annual Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race, one of New England’s most scenic road races set for Aug. 19 on Cape Ann.
Runners can register at www.rungloucester.com. The race begins at 8 a.m. at the famous Fisherman’s Memorial statue on the historic Gloucester waterfront and takes runners along over five miles of picturesque ocean views, through downtown and back to the memorial. Last year, Jacob Barnett (38:32) of Medford, Mass., and Kyle Linn MacQueen (42:59) of Boston won the men’s and women’s titles.
The Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race is organized by Dave McGillivray, race director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon, and his team at DMSE, Inc. It is the third in a series of major New England road races in August – the TD Beach to Beacon in Maine (Aug. 4) and the New Balance Falmouth Road Race on Cape Cod (Aug. 12).
“We’re hoping runners who want to run all three races will put Gloucester on their schedule this summer. Run Gloucester is still the new guy on the block, so to speak, but as anyone who has run this flat, coastal course can tell you, it’s a real gem and stacks up in terms of beauty and ocean views,” McGillivray said.
The national running magazine Runner’s World last summer cited the Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race as a destination race, noting its “million-dollar ocean views” and historic seaport charm. “If you’re looking to race to the sights, sounds and smells of the Atlantic, than Run Gloucester! delivers the coastal vibe – without the crushing crowds,” the article said.

Early registration is encouraged at www.rungloucester.com. Also, for race updates and information, follow the race on Facebook and Twitter.
Volunteers are also needed on race day and to help promote the race in the Gloucester area and can sign up online or contact the race at info@rungloucester.com.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association (GFAA) which raises funds for Gloucester High School student-athletes, sports programs and facilities, and is a key supporter of the renovation of Gloucester High’s Newell Stadium.
Founded by McGillivray in 1981, DMSE Sports, Inc. (www.dmsesports.com) is a leader in sports event management, specializing in creating, marketing and producing mass participatory athletic events throughout the U.S. and abroad. McGillivray has produced or consulted on more than 900 mass-participatory athletic events throughout the world and currently manages more than 30 races per year, including the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, the Feaster Five Thanksgiving Day Road Race, Harvard Pilgrim Finish at the 50 at Patriot Place – to name a few – and this year was named race director of the New Balance Falmouth Road Race on Cape Cod.

New this year: More markets, more vendors, more fun

The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market has added to its season, starting one week earlier, and is planning two special indoor markets during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. New vendors this year are offering roasted nuts, herbs, homemade cheese, condiments and new additions to our prepared food vendors to take home or eat at a near-by picnic table. These, along with Cape Ann Farmer’s Market farm favorites, crafters and local food producers, make the market one of the largest in Massachusetts. Along with an extensive array of fresh produce through-out the season, vendors will be selling baked goods, gelato, fresh pasta, fish from Fisherman’s Wharf Seafood, local wines and locally roasted coffee. Back yard growers will be selling produce, eggs, maple syrup, desert sauces, salsa, and jams. Craft tents will offer organic soap, hand-made jewelry, pottery, hand-printed clothing and art made from recycled materials. A complete list of vendors and weekly schedules may be found on www.capeannfarmersmarket.org.

The Farmers Market is at Stage Fort Park, overlooking beautiful Gloucester Harbor, through the courtesy of the City of Gloucester. Parking fees will be suspended during market hours, so plentiful free and ample parking will be available to shoppers. A CATA bus will run from the Rose Baker Center on Rogers Street to Stage Fort Park by reservation.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market is an independent non-profit, mission-based organization, started by and for the community of Cape Ann, and sustained with one part-time paid employee. It is funded by vendor fees, memberships, donations and grants. Cape Ann Farmers Market sponsors a used cookbook and garden book table, and will be selling tote bags, aprons, t-shirts and memberships, which include discounts at local restaurants and specialty stores every week to help offset the costs of running the market.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market accepts WIC coupons, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons, and SNAP/EBT, expanding its mission to bring healthy food to the entire community.

Other: The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market includes a wellness tent where shoppers can relax with a therapeutic massage, and an education tent where local non-profits promote their organizations and services. Cooking demonstrations are a frequent and popular attraction, and children’s activities are organized by Art Haven every week at 4:15 under the children’s tent. Stage Fort Park has a playground to entertain children while parents shop, and grills are available so families can stay for a picnic dinner or a concert at the bandshell. Prepared food available this year for taking home or dining at the park include homemade pickles, guacamole made on-site, fresh salsa, tacos, burritos, lobster and crab rolls, grilled chicken and pulled pork, fresh homemade pizza, savory and sweet tarts, a wide variety of baked goods including gluten-free goodies and Lebanese flat bread. A special picnic night is being planned in late July.

Talent: Instead of piped-in supermarket Muzak, area musicians provide an original background soundtrack for shopping. Performances are during market hours, from 3:30 to 6:30, and feature sea shanties, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and world music over the course of the summer.

Special Events: The Seafood Throw Down, a cooking contest and display by local chefs, will be held July 26 and August 23.

Kathleen Millers Paint Box

Cape Ann artist Kathleen Miller brings along her paint box for outdoor painting. The box sits either on the ground or on her lap, with her palette board attached to an easel setup as she paints. The paint box is an essential piece of equipment, containing everything she needs, except the canvas. In it, Kathleen packs her vibrant Gamblin oil paints, flat and filbert (rounded) brushes, and two pallete knives. “Almost all of the paintings I do in the summer are plein air (done outside),” Kathleen says. “I love painting all types of subject matter, although I’m especially drawn to the water.  Typically, I paint in the late afternoon, which has really nice lighting effects.” When asked to share a funny experience that happened to her while painting on location, she told about a time that she was set up at Stage Fort Park and a rat ran over her foot.  In spite of that, she made a beautiful painting of Half Moon Beach. “You never know what will happen when you paint outside!” she laughed. “You might end up with a beautiful painting with bugs stuck in it…  That’s just part of the experience!”  Her style, in her own words: “My feelings, expressed in color and design, are more important in my paintings than subject matter.” She likes to make small paintings, although she does larger works as well. Kathleen Miller currently has 57 original oil paintings displayed at Bodin Historic Photo & Fine Art in downtown Gloucester. You can look at Kathleen’s work on:

If you haven’t been to Second Glance you will be just as astounded as I was with the cheap cheap cheap stuff there and the money spent all goes toward feeding the hungry.

Like if you have a rental apartment to furnish this would be my first stop, no brainer.
