Breakfast at Atlantis — our official season starter — this Saturday

BreakfastatAtlantisEverybody has their “start of the season” favorites.  RD’s is a clam roll at Top Dog in Rockport (see Paul’s post about that here).

For Vickie, John and me it’s breakfast at Atlantis Oceanfront Cafe, which opens on Saturday.

For those of us who live here, hotels are not always top of mind, but this is one of the best  breakfast places anywhere.

Gorgeous view of the atlantic and the Twin Lights.  Warm, clean, sunny dining room.  Relaxed environment with excellent sound.  I know most people don’t consider sound high on their list of restaurant priorities, but I do.

It’s breakfast.  That means morning.  And the last thing I want to deal with first thing in the morning is loud ambient noise making it hard to talk–or even think–over breakfast.

Of course, the food is excellent–and fun.  Spectacular sticky buns.  Home-made corned beef hash, fish cakes, quiche, etc.  They even have a Monte Cristo.

John loves the pancakes.  Vickie usually has an omelet or quiche special.  My favorite is the Lobster Eggs Benedict they often offer as a special.  Whatever you choose, there’s no need for lunch.  They’re open 7:30-11.  You might want to call and see how busy they are 978-283-0014.

Breakfast and Soup at Sailor Stan’s

My mom, Jean Lefavour, came to visit for a couple of days and got to kick up her heels at the dance at the Rocky Neck Center last night, and have breakfast at Sailor Stan’s this morning.  We had the McStan’s breakfast sandwiches, which were delicious.

Don’t forget, tomorrow from 3:00-5:00 be at Sailor Stan’s for the Love of Soup Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition, with proceeds to benefit the Center at Rocky Neck.  There is still room for a few more soup entries, if you have a great soup you’d like to enter into the competition.  If so, email EJ at khanstudio@comcast.net with your name and type of soup you’re entering.  For soup lovers, this is going to be a special treat, and it is still chilly enough to really enjoy a great variety of soups made by the best local soup makers.   Winner gets a $25 gift certificate to Sailor Stan’s.

Sailor Stan’s – A Very Cool Place for Breakfast

In case you didn’t know, Sailor Stan’s is open for breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7:30 until 11:30-12:00.  As season starts coming in, they will be open more mornings.  Sailor Stan’s is one of the coolest most colorful artsy spots on Cape Ann, which always reminds me of Key West.  Karen and Wayne are the nicest people, and will cook you a special breakfast treat.  Wayne has a great display of his bold paintings on display, so your eyes as well as your mouth will be busy.

“Olivia’s by the Sea” is under new management, renovated, and almost ready to roll

“Olivia’s by the Sea”, formerly “Amelia’s” (near Good Harbor Beach), is under new management! It has been taken over by the same people who run the new Cape Ann Diner in Brown’s Mall.  It has been renovated, and work will continue until the summer.  The new layout includes an informal, tray-serving-style dining area, designed to be comfortable for beach-goers:

and a smaller, more formal area where there will be waiter service and a more comprehensive menu.

Outside, the plan is to have an ice cream window on one side of the outdoor eating area.  In short, something for everyone!

On Wednesday, the restaurant opened for a breakfast test run “on the house” so that a small number of people could try the food and meet the staff. I was invited, so I showed up for a late breakfast.  The menu has a wide selection of scrumptious sounding breakfast food, with reasonable prices (although not as inexpensive as the Cape Ann Diner, which is to be expected for the location and style). I opted for a scrambled egg with bacon, home fries, and beans, with a mug of decaf coffee.

It was delicious!  And the owner, Ron, and the greeters and servers were friendly and cheerful.

They will be opening fully for business sometime next month.  I look forward to it!

Breakfast at George’s Coffee Shop

Practically since I arrived in Gloucester, people have been telling me I have to try breakfast at George’s (178 Washington Street). For one reason or another, I had not made it until this past Sunday when I had breakfast there after Mass with some parishioners.  From among the many appetizing things on the menu, I chose “breakfast boats”:

That’s three potato halves, hollowed out and filled in with scrambled eggs and bacon, topped with shredded cheese and served with salsa and sour cream.  Wow.  It tasted as good as it looks!  However, it was twice what I could eat, so I ended up with leftovers for later.   Definitely worth ordering!  We were all satisfied with our meals.  I had tried a bite of someone’s plate-sized pineapple coconut pancake, and it was delicious too…

While we ate, I saw this unusual sight:

I’ve never seen a sign like that on a car before. The owner must have real problems with people trying to get friendly with those beautiful hounds.  It reminds me of this scene from “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” (which I just watched again):

Great Breakfast on Sunday

Rick and I went to Maime’s Kitchen, across from St. Ann’s, on Sunday morning.  Breakfast was so so good.  Rick had the scramble special with Linguica and I had an Omelet with Spinach, Tomato, mushroom with bacon.

Doesn’t this quiche look good?  You see why I had to take a bite before I got out my phone.  It tastes as good as it looks and is one reason why I’m very happy that Atlantis opened their Cafe today!

Peter had the Fish Cakes Benedict.

Wow!  Some of the best fish cakes we’ve ever had.  Too bad they don’t serve dinner.  These would make a super appetizer.  Jessica the chef uses a secret ingredient.  She wouldn’t let me say what it is, but you could always try to guess.  The Atlantis Oceanfront Cafe is now open to the public (you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel) 7 days a week from 7:30-11:00am.  I’d recommend going before the season gets crazy busy.

You can work up a good breakfast appetite by dancing tonight and there are plenty of opportunities for that.  Peter and I will be at Minglewood to see our friend Brad Byrd with his “A” Band (but we’ll do our best to stay out of the video shoot).  Now if you’d prefer to be on camera (see the folks from last time), put on something you want to be photographed in and come on down.  Music starts at 9.

Fort Square Café Features Holiday Gifts In Addition To Fantastic Food and Sparkling Conversation!

As I’ve stated ad nauseum there is no where I’ve ever been that has as many incredible breakfast joints as we have here.  So to be in business in Gloucester serving breakfast you have to be special.

…and the Fort square Café is just that- very special.  With Rusty making EVERYONE feel welcome the way only he can work a room to Heidi’s incredibly creative menu (yesterday she was making peppermint cheesecake) the food is always outstanding.

If you want to get a real feel for the people of this town just belly on up to the breakfast counter and let the master of ceremonies Rusty entertain you while Heidi works her magic at the helm of the kitchen.

Leftovers: Saint Patrick’s at Lee’s

Checking through the hard drive leftovers and forgot to post our Saint Patrick’s Breakfast at Lee’s.

This Leprechaun may as well be saying, “You’re not from around these parts now are you?” Yes it is true it is the first time we had breakfast at Lee’s. I know, hard to fathom. Can you see the Steve Connelly sign in the background? I have been there.

Then it was back home to plant the peas which is something that has to be done on Saint Patrick’s Day. They already need thinning.

Checking in from Rockport: Red Skiff Hash!

Grabbing my second breakfast of the day late this morning almost 10AM thought the Red Skiff right in Rockport would be the ticket on a Saturday morning. Busy but my daughter and I grabbed a table and she ordered the coconut pancakes and I ordered the top special which is Eggs Benedict with Corned Beef Hash.

I love coconut in most situations but a pancake? Hmm.  But the pancakes hit the table two seconds before my dish so I tried a bite and amazing fluffy coconut goodness. Then I got to mine and chewed off a good piece before I thought to take a photo.

I am never as controlled as Joey that I can take a photo of my food before I mess it up. But you can see the hash below that Benedict. The home fries were normal Red Skiff Spectacular but the part I had forgotten, the english buried in there was obviously toasted on the grill. This gave a nice crispiness on top which withstood the Benedict sauce flowing down. Slightly offscreen was a side of bacon and coffee which kept me going the rest of the day. No lunch for me on Saturday.

Did I mention I like the hash at Red Skiff? The pancakes were huge and I am trying to break a habit of licking my plate in public so a doggy bag of pancake and some hash made its way home. That lasted all of 30 seconds as everyone else had arrived and acted like wild animals.
