My View of Life on the Dock
Just a few of the things that caught my eye while out walking Marlin last night. Including “our beach” and bits and pieces of Bearskin Neck….such as one of the most photographed lanterns on Cape Ann. It was nice to be able to hit the streets again without having to battle colossal snow banks. Bring on Spring!
Mother Nature announces November’s arrival in a big way!
The “lighthouse” at the end of the harbor breakwater on Bearskin Neck in Rockport has precariously tumbled away from its perch. Even though I live right down the street and go by this often by boat, I’m not sure exactly when this happened. Anyone?
Do I need to add words to get my point across about this picture?
Like I could write that you should go there and try this but do I really need to take the time or does the picture motivate you to want to mosey on over and order one up?
We stopped in at the 7th Wave Restaurant to see our son Alex last weekend. For my husband, he cooked the sweetest, most freshest swordfish special, with grilled veggies, and cannellini beans with pesto. I had the steamers, grilled asparagus, and fried calamari appetizer. The calamari appetizer portion was so generous, I took half home and had it for lunch the following day. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the view, lovely.
The Kahn Family owners are wonderfully welcoming and the waitstaff at the 7th Wave are always friendly, professional, and lots of fun. Their topside deck is open for al fresco dining, just be sure to bring a sweater, and if outdoors is too chilly for you, the 7th Wave’s indoor dining room also has a beautiful view of the harbor and Bear Skin Neck. The 7th Wave is open for lunch and for dinner. The kitchen closes at 7:00 on Friday and Saturday, and at 6:00 on Sunday. This weekend and next are their last two weekends of the summer.

Last Saturday, The Art Nook had an opening reception at it’s new location at 58 Bearskin Neck in Rockport.
It features a variety of work by local artists, including Kathleen Miller, Stefan Mierz and Larry Martin-Bittman and Micheal Foley.
Of course, the reception offered delicious food! As we circulated through the gallery, many of us took a moment to admire the sunset from the gallery’s back patio.
One of our family’s very favorite restaurants (and not just because our son is a cook there) is the 7th Wave Restaurant, located at Tuna Wharf on Bearskin Neck in Rockport. The staff is delightfully friendly, the seafood is always fresh, delicious, and cooked to perfection, and we love eating al fresco amongst the treetops on the 2nd floor deck, with a spectacular view of Rockport Harbor below

The 7th Wave is not only owned by the Kahn Family, it is a family-operated business as well; in fact their name is derived from the seven family members who work and own the business–the parents and their five children. A few Rockport shops and galleries were open on Sunday and thankfully, there was hot coffee to be had at both Bean & Leaf and Brothers’ Brew. Bearskin Neck was pretty beat up, with chunks of asphalt upended, the buildings covered in ice, and debris scattered all over the place. Residents were hard at work cleaning up and were very gracious to those of us who were wandering on a Sunday stroll while they were trying to make their homes and businesses accessible and safe.
As the weather is starting to warm up, the shops, restaurants and galleries are opening up and getting down to business. I stopped by for lunch and a stroll the other day.
I had lunch with friends at Top Dog of Rockport. If you like hot dogs, this is the place to go! They have an amazing variety of hot dog / topping combos, with creative names like “German Shepherd” (which comes with sauerkraut) and “Italian Greyhound” (with grilled peppers and onions). For those who, like me, don’t eat hot dogs, they have other offerings as well. I had a bowl of clam chowder, which was hot and delicious!

Corey Tevan (about whom I posted a while back) has added more paintings of trees and flowers to one corner of his gallery. I love his art – if I had the money (and the space to hang them) I’d buy at least half the paintings in his gallery:
Chris Coyne did some work on his gallery over the winter, and has filled it with more of his beautiful paintings of local landscapes and cityscapes. If I had a room for Corey Tevan’s work, I’d have another for paintings by Chris:
Eugene Quinn is also back after being away all winter. I didn’t get a photo this time, but you can check out his work on his web page. I’d have to have another room in my dream house for his landscapes and still life works. He also does portraits sometimes, but doesn’t have any on display right now. He has a very sweet and affectionate dog named Layla who tried to “kiss” me on the lips. No thanks!
There are loads of other great galleries and shops to visit. I hope to visit a few more of them soon and share more photos. It’s worth walking down Bearskin Neck just for the view at the end. Here’s a partial panorama (looking southeast):
I am often in Rockport to preside at one the morning Masses on Sunday. When I have the earlier (8:30AM) Mass, I like to go down afterwards to Bearskin Neck for a walk and for breakfast. I’ve tried a couple of places, and one of my favorites is Helmut’s Strudel, down towards the end of Bearskin Neck, on the right.

They have a selection of wonderful-looking pastries. My goal is to try one of each eventually…
They also have a patio with a nice view, where you can sip your coffee and munch on your strudel.

Last weekend I went for a stroll in Rockport to visit some of the shops and galleries that are starting to open, now that warmer weather is here.
Among the doors that were open was that of Corey Tevan’s gallery on Bearskin Neck.
It’s worth the visit just to meet Corey, who is a very warm and interesting person. He brings a great spiritual and artistic sensitivity to his work.
Many of the paintings on display are ethereal, otherworldly cityscapes with one or two dominant, deeply saturated hues, although examples of other kinds of work are also on display – some with brilliant rainbows of color, as you can see in the background of the last photo in this post. Some of the paintings exhibited are still works in process, at varying stages – from fathomless starry skies waiting to be occupied, to cities still emerging from the blue mist of the canvas.
I ended up buying one of the smaller paintings that really caught my fancy. Maybe someday I’ll save up and buy one of the big ones… I find his work very calming and engrossing to view.
There were a few other people visiting the gallery at that time, one of whom turned out to be a very skilled magician, Dario Pittore. He dazzled us with a few tricks, including making a tree and a ladder appear out of old newspapers.
His gallery is at 60 Bearskin Neck. Stop in and check it out when you get a chance! It’s really worth it.
