International Dory Race Committee Update From Jimmy T

Grand Banks Dory
Grand Banks Dory

This coming Saturday from 10 am ’til around 3 pm the IDRC will set up
our booth at the Heritage Center for “Schoonerfest 2008”. As well as
having an exhibition race between the “Bluenose” crew and the local
Coast Guard  we’ll be raising awareness, distributing joy and selling
t-shirts. Feel free to stop by and support the cause.

September 13th is the International races in Canada and plans are now
being made for that trip. Anyone interested can contact me for further
information.

There are still tickets available for the fundraising sail aboard the
schooner “Thomas E. Lannon” on September 21st. This is going to be a
great afternoon sail and we strongly recommend all members try and make
it. The money raised for this event will make the first payment on the
new boats.

September 27th we’ll be participating in the “Trails and Sails” event
with the Heritage Center, bringing people out in dories and showing them
how to row.

Volunteers are needed, and greatly appreciated, for all above events.
I’d love to see some of you pitch in hour or two and help support dory
rowing!

Peace, out.

International Dory Races Eliminations Results From Jimmy T

Here’s the Junior Dory Crew Kyle Edmonds and Joe Ciolino (Joe Ciolino is the son of our very own contributor and sticker magnet maker- Frank Ciolino) that will be representing Gloucester vs the Canadians in Lunenburg for the Canadian portion of the International Dory Races. I didn’t realize that they raced in Gloucester and in Lunenburg every year. I thought they alternated Gloucester one year and Lunenburg the next but in fact they race in each port every year.

International Dory Races Eliminations 8/23/08, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

As always, the American elimination races to determine who will
represent us in Canada produced some controversy, some excitement and
some great races.
The first race of the day, in the Junior Division, featured Joe Harmon
and Ben Favazza, Randy Parisi and L.J. Robertson, and Joe Ciolino and
Kyle Edmonds. The older, stronger crews got out to an early lead. Harmon
and Favazza lost their course and forced Parisi and Robertson off their
course. Ciolino and Edmonds were undaunted and held their course like
experienced veterans. By the time Harmon/Favazza and Parisi/Robertson
were halfway to the turning flags they were completely out of the race
course, they collided and did not resume rowing. Ciolino and Edmonds
took advantage of the other crews misfortune and went on to win the race
and the right to represent their country in Nova Scotia.

The Women crew of experienced champion Katherine Richmond and strong
new-comer Samantha Rose rowed unopposed and showed fine form and had a
very competitive time.

The Masters Division had the largest turn out and had to have 2 heats.
In the first heat, reigning champions Joe Sanfilippo and Mark Duval were
pushed by the powerful tandems of Dave Quinn and Jim Tarantino and
legendary rowers Jack Sultan and Mike Cody. But as always a perfect
course and turn put Duval and Sanfilippo ahead for keeps and into the
final on Monday night. In the 2nd Masters heat, John Scola and Mike
Harmon used a power stroke to defeat the quicker stroke of veteran Ed
Parnell and Charlie Mullen. In the final Monday night, Harmon and Scola
decided to attach Duval and Sanfillippo with a fast stroke to compensate
for a recurring sinus affection suffered by Scola. It was a mistake. The
long smooth stroke of the Masters Champs gave them a decisive victory
margin.

Next came the Mixed Doubles Division. Katherine Richmond took advantage
of her new partners inexperience by hooking up with the Mighty Jimmy T.
as her dorymate. Samantha Rose teamed up with Mike Harmon who had just
completed his Masters race. There was no quarter given, despite it was
the first time in the boat together for Rose and Harmon, who had just
exhausted himself winning his elimination. Richmond and Tarantino won
handily. Rumor is Tarantino had a chip on his shoulder after being
soundly defeated by the Canadian Mixed Doubles duo of Trevor Swim and
Nicole Jones. “I’m out for revenge!” Tarantino said after the race. “I
haven’t had a good night’s sleep since Trevor and Nicole beat me!” he
growled, with a crazy Manson-like stare!

The Open class was the heated battle of the day. Incumbent champions
Erik Dombrowski and Glenn Harrington had a war with Jerry Ciaramataro
and his young strong new partner Mike Lovasco. Geoff Thomas and Billy
Edmonds had some technical difficulties and quickly fell behind in the
heat. All the way out and back the Committee boat reported mixed lead
changes between Harrington/Dombrowski and Ciaramataro/Lovasco. With just
a quarter mile to go the experienced champs started to pull away and
eventually got the win by just about a boat length. However, due to
buisiness obligations, Harrington and Dombrowski are unable to make the
trip to Canada so the U.S. will most likely be represented by
Ciaramataro and Lovasco in the Open Class.

It appears most of the American entourage will be leaving on the
Wedensday ferry out of Bar Harbor. Anyone interested in making the trip
please contact me for further information.

Out.

(thanks for the reminder Geoff)

It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful morning to grab a cup of coffee and head on down to Niles Beach to catch the races. Bring the family. Get into it. It’s fun fun fun!

Dorymaster Race Results From Jimmy T

It was a gorgeous summer day for the 1st Annual Dorymaster Solo Races.
Thanks to the help of Skip Levielle towing the boats over to Annisquam,
the races went off right on schedule. There were 6 competitors in all (4
men and 2 women) competing for the Dorymasters Cup trophy on the 1/2
mile course, which starts on the north side of the footbridge, goes up
deep into Lobster Cove to turn the flags and return to the finish line
near the footbridge.

As race time drew near, throngs of rowing fans crowded the footbridge.
The first race featured experienced Jim Tarantino against new-comer Dave
Buchanan. In an effort to show good-sportsmanship, Tarantino gave way on
the starting line to allow for plenty of berth. Once the starting gun
went off, it was no longer a friendly race, as Buchanan got the early
lead. Halfway to the flags, Tarantino was able to pull even, but try as
he might he couldn’t shake Buchanan, who impressed with a beautiful long
stroke. But the inexperience of Buchanan hurt him, a superior turn and
quicker rate of the old fox Tarantino on the way home, into a strong
westerly wind, gave Jimmy T. the victory in 6:11:28. Dave Buchanan
finished with a  respectable 6:47:28.

The second race featured two International Dory Champions. Erik
Dombrowski vs. Katherine Richmond. Dombrowski crowded Richmond at the
starting line, determined to get every advantage possible. The gun went
off and these two fierce competitors shot off the starting line like
rockets! Both excellent course keepers, they made the turning flags in
good time, but Dombrowski’s extra weight in the boat gave him the
advantage coming home into the wind. Receiving tremendous encouragement
from the Committee boat at the start line,  Erik finished strong with a
great time of 6:11:50. Katherine Richmond had the best womens time of
the day with 6:50:66.

The westerly winds increased, creating difficult conditions for the
final heat. Damon Cummings and Gina Lampassi got off to a great start
but several times down the course the wind got hold of their sterns and
turned them sideways, making it hard to get an even pull for boatspeed.
Once Gina got her bow to the wind she used her experience to keep a
perfect course on the way home, finishing in 7:09:50. Damon had a tough
course coming home into the heavy winds, but pulled out a time of 8:01:40.

Thanks to all the competitors and supporters who helped to make this
event fun and successful. Laurel Tarantino worked the Committee table
and seasoned veteran Jack Sultan, a legendary Dory rower, came out to
lend support and advise to the competitors. Scouts in the dory world
have seen Sultan working hard in the dories with fellow legend Mike
Cody, and the buzz is they may be competing in the Masters Division in
August.

This Just In From Jimmy T- Solo Dory Races

Anyone who would like to compete in the solo dory races on Saturday, the 26th
of July, should be at the footbridge in Annisquam at 3 p.m. to register.
The race time has been changed to 4 p.m. due to the tide. This event is
taking place during the Annisquam Sea Fair and should have a large group
of spectators. The IDRC president has every intention of winning this
race by as wide a margin as possible. All members are encouraged to come
watch or compete in this 1st-ever solo event!

Tickets for the fund-raising sail aboard the schooner “Thomas E. Lannon”
are here-by offered first to you members. There are only 49 tickets
available. Cost is $50.00 pp. This event will be a celebration of the
construction of the new race boats. We wish we could give some of you
who have done so much complimentary tickets but the Committee has
decided we need this fund to make the first installation payment for the
new boats. I will be purchasing 2 tickets for Laurel and I and also will
be performing mid-sail!

There has been a large growth in new members and we are currently unable
to accommodate the demand for loaner equipment and new oars. Anyone who
has loaner equipment and is not using it please return it to me asap.
Those of you who are looking for new oars, we are out but are picking up
more in early September.

Get involved! Come enjoy these wonderful events and people!

Canadian Seniors Division Rowers Wylie Blades & Donnie Mahanney

Wylie Blades and Donnie Mahanney pass out literature at The International Dory Races on our State Fish Pier promoting Shelburne Nova Scotia as a tourist destination. They were dressed in period garb and were pretty funny guys. They took a good ribbing when I told them that I didn’t know Nike was making sneakers a couple hundred years ago.
