Continuing with origami dragons in honor of the Year of the Dragon, here is number 2:

This is a “mutation” of Wen’s Dragon. The original design was described by Sok Song in issue #7 of Creased magazine; this model shows some significant variations.

Folded from a single uncut 6″ square of textured foil; finished size is approximately 3″ head to tail.

If we get enough people interested, I would like to get something going.  I posted on this before and got one or two responses, but I’d like to expand that base.

I shouldn’t make light of an invasive species problem, but I can hardly resist.  I’m willing to personally eliminate the threat, dietarily speaking.  Not nearly as good as lobsta, of course, but I’ll sacrifice myself to the cause.  Whatever time I have left, I’ll finish my mission with good old Capt. Joe Mass. lobster, which is a helluva a lot better.

Scientists: Giant cannibal shrimp invasion growing

An invasion of giant cannibal shrimp into America’s coastal waters appears to be getting worse.

Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Thursday that sightings of the massive Asian tiger shrimp, which can eat their smaller cousins, were 10 times higher in 2011 than in 2010.

“And they are probably even more prevalent than reports suggest, because the more fisherman and other locals become accustomed to seeing them, the less likely they are to report them,” said Pam Fuller, a USGS biologist.

The shrimp, which can grow to 13 inches long, are native to Asian and Australian waters and have been reported in coastal waters from North Carolina to Texas.

They can be consumed by humans.

"They’re supposed to be very good. But they can get very large, sorta like lobsters," Fuller said.

While they may make good eatin’ for people, it’s the eating the giant shrimp do themselves that worries scientists.

Bridge Traffic Game From Erin Dooley

Mornin’…. Loving the blog as always….

Yesterday as my husband and I sat in the bridge traffic to get back into Gloucester we started talking (again) about the Gloucester bridge traffic game…..

It seems there are three categories: The wait-in-liners, the blockers and the passers. And its fast becoming a sport with the passers and the blockers pulling some pretty intricate maneuvers. Just yesterday we saw three trucks in plow formation blocking the whole road!

I wrote on my Facebook page the other day asking people which team they were and we’ve been having a great conversation. (the gist of which comes down to: If we could all agree to just use both lanes, everyone might be happy.)

I thought of your blog and wondered if you’d ever want to start that conversation. Its getting pretty heated on the road lately and i think maybe some people would do well to hear from the other teams.

This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.

The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.

Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.

NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION’S 90th SEASON OPENING EXHIBITS

The North Shore Arts Association will kick off its 90th Anniversary Season with its first Members’ Exhibition which will run May 5th through June 2nd.  Various media of all original artwork will be represented.  The public is invited to an Awards Reception on Sunday, May 6th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
Coinciding with Members’ Exhibition I, the works of Sharon Jordan Bahosh will be displayed in the Gordon Grant Room.  This show will run from May 5th – May 24th with a “Meet the Artist” reception on Sun., May 6th from 1-4pm.
Also from May 5th- May 24th, artist Steve Kennedy will display his latest works in a solo exhibition of paintings.
In addition to its five Member Exhibitions and six solo and small works shows, NSAA will highlight its 90th Season with an Anniversary Exhibit of founding artists and early artist members, as well as an exhibit by the International Society of Experimental Artists.  Throughout this exciting season which runs May-October, many special lectures, demonstrations, workshops and programs will be offered to celebrate NSAA’s 90th Anniversary, a truly historic milestone!
North Shore Arts Association has a thriving artist membership of over 350 contemporary artists recognized nationally and worldwide. They come not only from Cape Ann, but throughout North America.
NSAA’s historic old building, located at 11 Pirates Lane in East Gloucester, provides the opportunity to view one of the largest collections of paintings and sculpture on Cape Ann. 
North Shore Arts Association is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays from Noon to 5:00 pm. Have I told you guys how much fun I’ve been having taking pictures for you?

Took this a couple of days ago before work. It was nearly pitch dark out and I set up the tripod in the corner of Beacon Marine right where the black iron fence starts. I was bent over adjusting the settings when two people came out from around the corner and startled the hell out of me. I don’t often have people bouncing around at that time of morning. Stay tuned throughout the next couple of weeks where you will see some of the best photography I feel I’ve captured to date.

What Just Happened? Sculpture Event at Toad Hall Bookstore!

Toad Hall Bookstore is celebrating their 40th birthday this year with several special events, one of which took place on Earth Day, April 22nd. As many of you know, Toad Hall’s profits go toward supporting environmental causes, so in keeping with that theme, sculptor Nina Samoiloff brought 40 pieces of (GREEN!) beach trash scavenged from Rockport’s beaches to create a sculpture in a live event in front of the store on Earth Day. And don’t say Rockport isn’t a wild and crazy place for street art, because just like in the big cities, the cops came by and made her move along. Vive les arts! Vive Toad Hall Bookstore!

Painting Studio Space Available on Rocky Neck

If you are a painter looking for studio space for the season, there is space available for rent in the back of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck for the season (June through September) – a fun and inspiring place to be.  The space is just under 100 sq ft, has a separate entrance, storage shelves for paints and supplies, and a work table.  There is also a table and standup easel available to use.  If interested, please contact EJ at khanstudio@comcast.net
