Family Promise North Shore’s new Family Day Center is open in Beverly!

As promised yesterday, here’s a slideshow of the opening ceremony and the Beverly facility itself. As is clear from the photos, there was a pretty good turnout for the event, including Mayor Bill Scanlon, who cut the ribbon together with Family Promise North Shore‘s Network Manager, Gloucester native Elise Sinagra.

It’s great that we have this new initiative (following a nation-wide model) to help families who are homeless by offering a day center where kids and parents can spend time in a safe, sheltered environment, or where the they can have a stable temporary address for school bus pickups, job applications, etc. Several Gloucester churches are involved in the program in one way or another, either as an institution or through the volunteer efforts of their members. But help and donations are still needed!

GHS In Spain

Cathy Lawson Submits-clip_image008

On April 10, 2013 forty-five Gloucester High students left for a ten-day visit to Spain. The trip began in the city of Madrid. They visited Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Retiro Park and the Royal Palace, which has more than 2,800 rooms.

The following day students traveled to the picturesque city of Toledo, the old capital of the country, which lies an hour outside of Madrid. In Toledo students walked through winding streets, visited the beautiful Medieval Cathedral, and visited the church of San Tome where they were able to see one of the most famous paintings by Velázquez, El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz. In the afternoon students visited the city of Segovia with its famous 2000 year old Roman aqueduct and the beautiful Alcazar castle.

From Madrid, students travelled toward the north of Spain. The first city they visited was Burgos. This city has an impressive Gothic cathedral made famous by the legendary hero, El Cid. The following day, students continued on to Bilbao where they visited the famous Guggenheim museum. The building itself is a masterpiece, designed by Frank Gerah.

The following day, using money from the fundraiser, students visited Biarritz, the playground of the rich and famous in France. In the morning, they had the chance to put their feet in the Atlantic Ocean, speak a bit of French and, of course, sample fresh croissants. Students spent the rest of the afternoon playing on the beach, swimming, or sunbathing.

The tour continued to the city of Zaragoza en route to Barcelona. Students visited the beautiful Basilica of our lady of El Pilar. Zaragoza is a Roman city where Emperor Caesar Augustus had established a Roman settlement.

The final destination was Barcelona. In this beautiful city, students visited the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia designed by the architect Antonio Gaudi. They also had an opportunity to walk through the Güell, Montjuïc Hill Park and one of Gaudi’s houses. On the last day, students visited Montserrat, famous for its monastery, caves and its amazing mountain with its weirdly shaped crags of rock. The town lies just 40km northwest of Barcelona and is a summer escape for many. The highlight of this visit was hearing the children’s choir sing the Salve Regina and one of the local songs.

Throughout their trip, students were able to experience authentic meals such as paella, tapas, local fish, different hams and other gastronomic delights. On one occasion, students had the opportunity to see — and participate in — an evening of Flamenco dance.

Dear Joey,

This is a picture of my daughter on Good Harbor Beach the other day, welcoming spring by rolling with great joy in the sand.

Thought it might be a good community photo.

Cheers.

Hey Joey!
Things are hopping over at the Paint Factory since the move-in has begun!
Over two weeks we’ve had wonderful teams of volunteers, including members of
the Rocky Neck Art Colony, helping us clean and paint the inside of Building
E. You can see the gorgeous original wood trim that Jim Casey has
painstakingly sanded. Rebecca Siswick from Island Art & Hobby is still
painting some of the original building details with her skilled artist’s
hand. We had a lot of fun working with everyone and are very grateful to
Barbara Boudreau for organizing the effort.
This weekend Iain and Geoffrey Richon battled for hours with the septic
system to install a new alarm, another nasty job to cross off the list. The
bathroom is in, lights are in, phones are in, furniture is in, gravel is
coming, so it’s a very exciting time.
Thanks for passing along the good news.

Hi Joey,
I’m celebrating 20 years at Barbara Donnelly Gallery at 19 Harbor Loop – one of Gloucester’s best kept secrets!  I have had studio space in Gloucester since 1979. The water and boats have always drawn me to them. My grandfather and uncle built wooden boats so the boats and sea speak to me. One of my ancestors was a Welsh sea captain who immigrated to Maine so I have the sea in my blood,    OPEN STUDIO & Sale  May 3 – 5 from 12 – 6 each day.  Need your help to let people know there is Art on Harbor Loop. I’ve followed your GMG for about a year and I love it.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship schooner Lewis H. Story will be the focus of attention at a Mount Desert Island, Maine celebration

Len Burgess writes-

The Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship schooner Lewis H. Story will be the focus of attention at a Mount Desert Island, Maine celebration.
In July a Mount Desert Island Historical Society crew will come to Massachusetts and sail the Lewis H. Story from Gloucester to Mount Desert Island, Maine. The Harold Burnham designed Lewis H. Story is a replica of a Chebacco type boat, the kind of vessel used by the first colonial settlers to come to Mount Desert Island. The Island Historical Society will be inviting the community to come aboard the boat the week of July 15 to 21 for day sails and other fun events. -Photo Len Burgess

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This is a somber week on the waterfront. There was no last minute reprieve from the quota cutbacks that took effect on May 1, which, when combined with the catch share management system, has put many small Gloucester fishermen on the brink of extinction.

Naz Sanfilippo, owner of f/v Cat Eyes, has been fishing for 47 years, since he was 8 years old. Naz tells us it looks like that is all over. The cod cutbacks are so stringent, he says, he can exhaust his entire quota in one haul.
