Standers vs Sitters On Pavilion Beach. Is There really any debate on this one?

Hi Joey:  There was a significant amount of friction between the folks
on Pavilion Beach during the Greasy Pole competitions this weekend.
I’m of the old school that says standing room only!  The sitters were
not only taking up more than their share of beach, they were yelling
(cursing at times) at anyone who was blocking their view. From what I
witnessed each afternoon it could have easily resulted in a rumble
many times over.  How about setting up a poll and let’s see what the
GMG Community thinks about this issue? Viva!! Rick Terselic

I’m not sure there should even be a debate about this.  If it’s standing room only it’s standing room only during the Greasy Pole and Seine boat races.  Obviously if you have some old folks that can’t stand up you move to the side for them but people really can’t expect the whole beach to part for them o have direct sight lines to the pole if everyone else is standing up.  that’s just plain ridiculous.

But we’ll poll it anyway and leave your comments below in the comment section.

Storm Clouds Over Gloucester Harbor

Hi Joey,

I caught this formation over Gloucester Harbor Wednesday afternoon. This was part of the storm that the tornado warnings were issued about  today. I was looking at the radar map on Weather.com and saw this red spot heading toward Gloucester. When I looked outside this is what I saw!

Barbara and I recently returned from a 17-day visit to Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was an adventure that we will always remember.

As you might have guessed, I took a few (thousand) photos and video clips. Rather than share them all with you (although I know you would love that), I thought it best to post several short composite still and movie videos on YouTube intermittently over several days.

Video is a medium I am just beginning to learn, so please bear with me as I aspire to reach the very high standards of GMG’s Craig Kimberly and Kim Smith.

Here is the first effort featuring our arrival in Johannesburg and a cruise on the Chobe River in Botswana.

The tour was booked through Boston based Overseas Adventure Travel. We stayed in tented camps and rustic lodges and were transported from place to place by open vehicle, bus, light planes and small boats.

Soundtrack music is by Ingonyama whom we were lucky enough to see and hear around a campfire in Zimbabwe.

July 19, 20 and 21, 10 am – 3 pm

This is an intensive three-day workshop that explores traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing with chalk pastels. There will be an ongoing conversation about color (observed and expressive), formal and technical drawing concerns, and meaning and metaphor as it relates to our work. There will be demos, critiques, and lots of one-on-one attention. Participants should have basic drawing skills. If you love to draw and would like to learn how to use pastels, or would like to brush up on your pastel technique and try new things, this would be a great workshop to take. Painters will find this medium a welcome addition to their studio practice.

Artist and Educator Gabrielle Barzaghi is a Senior Lecturer at New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University and has taught college level drawing since 1980. You may see her work at www.gabriellebarzaghi.com

The Sunday Greasy Pole competition with winner Nick Alvelis was a fantastically exciting event and I captured lots of good footage and have lots of great music in mind–hopefully the editing will be done by the end of today.

My milkweed is still aways from blooming I think because the temperatures are warmer further inland. Thanks for sharing Al!

Roots 66 to open Free Boulevard Concert July 3 ~ Dance & Party from 5-11PM

Ev Harlow and his band Roots 66 have agreed to open the free concert on the Boulevard beginning at 5pm on Wednesday 7/3.  Their bluesy blend of roots, classic rock and Americana fits perfectly with the spirit of the day and will help us all get ready to celebrate our independence with music, dancing, parade, fireworks & a spectacular laser light show.

Then after the parade, and for the 6th year in a row, Carlos Menezes, Jr. will bring us music from Cape Ann Big Band and The Runaround Sound to Ringo Tarr’s Boulevard stage for a city-wide dance party by the Cut Bridge at the corner of the Boulevard and Centennial Ave (see map here).  This free concert, presented by The Gloucester Fund and gimmesound.com, is only possible because of lots of hard work and generosity on the part of Ringo, his stage/event team and the musicians — all of whom donate their time and talent.  Come down on Wednesday and show them some love!

Finally breaking through the half-way point on my list of second-hand stores in Gloucester, today we look at another specialized store: Mystery Train Records (21 Main St., open 10-7 daily), which sells “rare and collectible vinyl recordings from every genre of music”. They also sell used CDs and DVDs.

DSC07670As you can see from the photo, the store is located near the western end of Main Street (close to the main venues of Fiesta!) and shares the building with Cape Ann Cinema. I have been in the store a couple of times, but every time I walk in I am impressed by the size of the store and the shear volume of their inventory (pun intended)!

Apparently customers travel from miles around to come here, as stores of this sort aren’t all that common. They also sell on eBay.

Of course, to be able to use the vinyl records, you need to have a record player. If you don’t still have one in your house from before the dominance of CD’s and MP3s, but are longing for that classic sound, you are not without recourse.  Mystery Train  usually has a few in stock (new or used), and you can also buy them on-line.
