Jason Burroughs’ art at The Hive

Yesterday evening at The Hive (on Pleasant Street, less than a block up from Main Street, on the right) there was an opening of an art show by Jason Burroughs in their back room. It was accompanied by a concert by a variety of bands. I stopped in to snag some photos! Jason is an up-and-coming local artist, who also works in the programs offered at The Hive and Art Haven.

He will also be in the gallery during the block party today. Stop by to see the art and meet the artist! And maybe buy a print or an original… Get it before he gets famous and the prices go up!

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

Baby Haddock:  Now legal, but is it healthy for the fishing industry?

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries recently amended the state’s regulations to complement federal groundfish regulations. The minimum size of commercial Gulf of Maine haddock has been reduced from 18 to 16 inches. Similar adjustments were made regarding other species of groundfish.

Romeo Solviletti of Steve Connolly Seafood in Gloucester explains how what sounds like an easing of catch regulations hurts the fishery, the industry and in the long run, the consumer.

Blue Moon

Blue Moon ©Kim Smith 2013For several reasons, Blue Moon is my favorite beer to order out on a hot summer night (warning to readers, I know even less about specialty and craft beers than I do about wines). The first reason being is that it always makes me think of the sweet song “Blue Moon,” written by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, and covered by many artists; the second reason is the attractive label, and lastly, because it tastes pretty good!

7th Wave ©Kim Smith 2013.Family friendly tree-top dining on the 7th Wave’s upper deck

This was intended to be a post about the 7th Wave Restaurant in Rockport. We sat down and ordered drinks, which I managed to photograph. I was just so hungry and dove right in as soon as our dinners were served. We were halfway through dinner, enjoying some very fabulous fried clams, before remembering that I had wanted to take photos–anyway, next time! I will say, they were the best friend clams of the entire summer. Craig Kimberley, are you reading this recommendation?

My favorite rendition of “Blue Moon” is Ella Fitgerald’s, but Billie Holiday’s is nearly just as wonderful and the following video has some lovely stills of Lady Day and of fashions from the 50s and 60s.

Toby Pett adds Elvis Presley’s tenderest of renditions. This video too has many beautiful photos, of The King.

Local stars going over the bridge to Beverly this fall

MardiGrasCrowdThere’s a hidden gem down the road in Beverly: The Larcom Theatre.  Opened in 1912 (the same year as Fenway Park) featuring Vaudeville shows, The Larcom’s initial advertising boasted, “Lit Completely by Electricity.”  Fully restored in 1985, the Larcom Theatre  became a second home to Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company, which closed in May 2012.

In April 2013, Vickie and I presented Henri Smith at the Larcom Theatre to a sold-out crowd, many of whom had never before set foot in the theatre.  We fell in love with the Larcom the minute we walked in, checked the acoustics and told one of the owners (David Bull, star of Le Grand David) that we’d like to present lots of concerts in this acoustically magical theatre…

So, we begin with a 2013 Fall Music Series featuring Gloucester legend Allen Estes and his new Band on October 5 with Dave Foley’s Fabulous Mustangs opening, The Slide Brothers on November 2 with Gloucester’s Michael Thomas Doyle opening, and A New Orleans Christmas with Henri Smith on December 14.  We’re working on another six shows for late winter and spring of 2014 and will announce them in the not-too-distant future.

These shows will sell out quickly, so we’re giving FOBs first crack the best seats.  Here’s where you can get tickets:
ALLEN ESTES
SLIDE BROTHERS
HENRI SMITH CHRISTMAS

The last time Allen Estes performed with a full band they nearly sold out the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, which has more than twice as many seats.

The Slide Brothers are the greatest living musicians who embody the Sacred Steel tradition. The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul all celebrated with a sound that is uniquely their own.  This is their only New England show this year.

Henri Smith sold out the Larcom in April.  Plus he sold out the 2012 Mardi Gras show in Gloucester and was the headliner for the 1000+ Celebrate Gloucester crowd in 2010.

I know it seems like you’ve got lots of time, but don’t wait to get good seats to these shows in one of the most beautiful, acoustically perfect venues north of Boston.

Sargent House celebrates Block Party from 6-8pm

945732_528864617185415_1804368809_n

This Saturday, 8/17, the Sargent House celebrates Block Party from 6-8pm.
SHM will have costumed actors roaming the garden, historic lawn games for
kids, and first floor Open House during the festivities on Main Street.
Boxed lunches by Beach Gourmet will be for sale; bring your blanket to
picnic on our scenic lawn.
At 6:30pm Henry Allen’s North Shore Folklore Theatre Co. will perform an act
from Judith Sargent Murray¹s 1795 play “The Medium” on the Block Party
stage. Judith¹s plays were the first plays by an American woman to be
staged. They have never been performed in Gloucester, and have rarely been
exhibited since their original debuts at Boston¹s Federal Street Theater.
Witness history in the making!
