Below is a list of some favorite nectar- and pollen-rich bee-friendly North American wildflowers for attracting native bees and honey bees to your gardens. They are listed in order of bloom time, from spring through late summer, to provide your foragers with nourishment all growing season long.

Cape Ann Big Band Only Spring Concert – Saturday May 3rd

A Cape Ann Big Band concert is one of those rare treats that comes along only a couple of times a year — and this Saturday, May 3,  they’re going over the bridge (for their only spring concert this year) to Beverly’s fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre.  Come Swing into Spring with Cape Ann Big Band playing hits from the swing, soul, jazz, and rock’n’roll songbooks as well as show tunes and pop songs.   

If you haven’t been down the road to the Larcom Theatre yet, this is your chance. It’s the perfect venue for a big band.  Built in 1912 (the same year as Fenway Park) by Vaudeville musicians, this gorgeous theatre has spectacular acoustics.  And we just installed a new, top-shelf sound system for perfect sound in every seat!  Get yours now.

I look forward to the questions  I receive from GMG FOB’s, family and friends each week! Dozens of questions are asked and answered in the aisles of local stores while I shop, and dozens are privately asked and answered through email, text message, Facebook , or Tweeter each day.  I especially love when a question  inspires a Sista’s Dish Post!  One question asked today did just that!

Sista Felicia’s Wrapping Suggestion~ Wrap baking dish in tea towel or small Table cloth; gather cloth ends in center of dish; fasten with Zip Tie; using matching decorative ribbon, tie fresh flower bouquet to gathered top and fix decorative bow!

Thu SE winds 15 to 20 kt…becoming S 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon. Gusts up to 30 kt. Seas 4 to 7 ft. Patchy fog. Showers with a chance of tstms. Some tstms may produce heavy rainfall. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.
Thu Night SW winds around 10 kt with gusts up to 20 kt… Becoming W after midnight. Seas 3 to 5 ft. Patchy fog. A chance of showers. Vsby 1 nm or less.

Forecast : Blah Blah Blah ! Sums up Thursday morning rain / Storms gusty winds from NE , then possibly some clearing by noontime but I wouldn’t count on it ! More showers / storms for the afternoon if we see any sunshine which would destabilize the atmosphere producing clouds and eventually showers / storms … Temps determined by amount of breaks we see , if we see a lot of sunny breaks temps could SOAR!! Into the lower 70°s away from the coast on a South west wind gusting to 30mph.. At the shore temps could possibly reach the 60’s if we break into the warm sector and front passes us to the north ! Again don’t bet on it … Thursday Night temps drop into the 40’s with early evening shower / thunderstorm .. Winds from the west south west 10-20mph …

Why is This Mouse’s Tail Bright Orange?

Mouse orange tail ©KIm Smith 2014JPGBecause my dear husband loves to trap mice, but does not have the heart to kill them. After capturing, he lets the mouse go. I asked, how can he be sure he is not catching the same mouse. He decided to conduct an experiment, painting the tail of any captured mouse with brilliant orange non-washable paint. None have showed up back at our home, but if you happen upon a cute orange-tailed mouse, please let us know!

Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update

Busy weekend.

Really had a cool snake show at Lynn Woods on Saturday for Earth Fest. Great job by: Nancy Gilberg, Colleen Anderson, Caitlyn Heathman, John Gallagher and Leslie Coutemanche.

On Sunday we had a very nice vernal pond/snake display at the Essex County Greenbelt. Thanks to Sam and Diane Bevins, Mariah Lowe, Jacob and Bryn Lord, Suzanne Selig, Denise Clinton and Jared and Aidan Wood.

Meanwhile, we also had a lovely vernal pond display at the Gloucester Pride Stride at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester by Colleen Anderson and Nicci Cataldo.

I did the field work for three more vernal ponds today to add to the nine we (Nick Taomina, Matt Burne and me) did last Friday.

In the whether-you-know-it-or-not department the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team and our sister organization, Kestrel Educational Adventures are moving to a new location on Main Street in Gloucester right across the street from the Police Station (I forget the number). Kestrel has really taken the lead on this and we are tagging along. It will be called the Get Outside Center and there is a:
