EVENT DESCRIPTION
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church invites the community to celebrate the life of folk singer and activist Pete Seeger at a special service Sunday, May 4, at 10 a.m. The tribute coincides with Seeger’s birthday, as the musician, who died on January 24, 2014, would have been 95 on May 3.
In her homily, Interim Minister Rev. Jenny Rankin will discuss Seeger’s life as an expression of Unitarian Universalist values. Says Rev. Rankin, “My hope is that people will have heard of him, and this will be a way we can help them better understand Unitarian Universalism and its commitment to social justice. ”
Music will be provided by The Dorymates (Tony Hilliard and Janet Ruth Young) with Nancy Grace and John Hicks. The service will include many favorite Seeger songs and plenty of opportunities for the congregation to sing along, including : “Where Have All the Flowers Gone, ” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “ Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream, ” “Old Devil Time, “We Shall Overcome, ” “My Rainbow Race, ” “If I Had a Hammer, ” “ and “How Can I Keep from Singing?”
There is no charge for the event, but free will donations are gratefully accepted. Refreshments will follow the service.
