GAAC July Meeting, “Astrophotography From Beginner to Expert”

The 8:00 pm Friday July 11 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club is a free astrophoto festival, filled with outstanding photos of planets, and immense, distant, colorful galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters, shown on GAAC’s 100 inch screen! The meeting will feature in-person presentations by four outstanding photographers, showing off their best work, and an introduction by our own Steve K, who will demonstrate how simple astrophotography can be for beginners.

Photographers Mario Motta, Phil Orbanes, John Hobbs and Barry Yomtov will each present their ten favorite pictures, and will talk briefly about what the objects are, how far away they are, how big, and a little about why and how each person got that shot.

This will be a spectacular, colorful night, with great presenters, and we’ll have a wonderful time getting a rare, entertaining and accessible look into the world of astrophotography. Many of the photographs can be previewed in the Gallery section of the club website, at http://gaac.us/

The club meets on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street Lanesville, from 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Parking is free. The public is warmly welcomed and there is no cost. More information is available through the website, or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage or in the club twitter feed, @gaactweet.

World’s Best and Zippiest Tartar Sauce Recipe ~ Made with Maitland Mountain Farm’s Holly’s Spicy Pickles

Best tartar sauce for your summer’s grilled fish dishes ~ and simplest, too!

Maintland Mountain Farm Pickles ©Kim Smith 2014Have you tried locally made Maitland Mountain Farm’s Holly’s Spicy Pickles? Not only are they super yummy, but when craving crunch they are fabulously satisfying. Using Maitland Mountain Farm’s pickles in tartar sauce makes for a wonderfully flavorful condiment, not the usual sticky sweet stuff more typically found.

Holly’s Spicy Pickles are available for sale at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market on Thursdays as well as wherever fine pickles are sold!

Recipe makes approximately 2 cups.

8 Maitland Mountain Farm’s Holly’s Spicy Pickle Spears, finely chopped

2/3 Cup Hellmann’s or homemade mayonnaise

1/3 Cup whole milk yogurt

1 teaspoon pickle juice

S & P to taste.

Combine all ingredients and serve with fresh fish. The remainder can be stored in an airtight container for several days.

BREAKING NEWS: Fireworks Cancelled, Horribles Parade and Free Concert Still ON

The Runaround Sound at the Boulevard on July 3

The Gloucester Fireworks Committee just cancelled tomorrow’s fireworks due to weather predictions (see Gloucester Times article here), but the Horribles Parade and free concert are still on in the hopes that weather will clear up.

Music featuring Cape Ann Big Band and The Runaround Sound will begin after the parade passes by the Boulevard stage (probably around 7:00pm) and continue until 11:00pm with a spectacular laser light show somewhere in between.

So come out and enjoy the parade and free concert.  Let’s show all those people visiting from out of town that bad weather predictions aren’t enough to spoil our fun!

2014 Fishtown Horribles Announcement

    image

Hey Joe, my name is John Linquata and I’m a member of the Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee.
We have been working all year long to put out another fun and entertaining parade for this great city. This year we are honoring Ray Smith of Smith Hardware who was a life long sponsor of the parade as parade marshall. We have Gloucester’s own 2014 Special Olympic Gold metal winner Danny Williamson as Grand Marshall Danny brought home the gold in the shot put and bronze in the 100 and 200 meter relay. We will also recognize and congratulate our two scholarship winners Samantha Ryder and Malya McLean.
Of course some of our favorite marching bands will be back and a few new ones that we are really excited to see perform here. As always we will have all the amazing floats that the wonderful people of Gloucester put together for the city to enjoy (which people can pre-register for at www.fishtownhorribles.org ). Of corse the Horribles our namesake who we are always looking for more of and clearly the Cape Ann YMCA would like to see more of too, because they donated two weeks at camp spindrift, one for a boy and one for a girl, anyone who would like to help collect money this year as a horrible will get an extra shot at the week at camp. And as always the parade line up is first come first serve which means the earlier you show up the closer to the front you are, Horribles are encouraged to show up around 5 pm and the parade starts promptly at 6 pm.
If anyone would like to volunteer we never turn down help we will be at the High School Auto shop Wednesday after 6 pm decorating and setting up and on Thursday from noon on, there is always plenty to do. And if anyone has any questions all of our contact information can be found on our website again that is http://www.fishtownhorribles.org and don’t forget to like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/fishtownhorriblesparade and tag us in your photos new or old we love to see them and others do too. We can’t wait to see everyone there have a happy and safe 3rd and 4th.
Thanks again Joe, anything we can do to get more people involved only makes the parade better for everyone, so we really appreciate your help. Have a great day.
John Linquata

GLOUCESTER AND PROVENCE FRANCE SUMMER EXCHANGE Saira Austin in Gloucester and Magali Excoffier in Mallemort, Provence, France

This will be the third summer that a French family and I exchange our houses, our cars and our friends. Four years ago Magali and Thierry and their two children Ariane and Thibaud arrived in Gloucester to spend a whole summer. They stayed in one room at the Captain’s Lodge. They fell in love with Gloucester and I fell in love with them. Thibaud spends his summers sailing at Eastern Point Yacht Club and Ariane spent hers drawing with the Rockport Art Association and learning English at a school in Boston. Now, during the summers, I live in their house and they live in mine. We exchange our cultures, our passions, our gardens, our town’s festivities. Magali and I would like to tell our story as it unfolds in this ‘Good Morning Gloucester’ blog.

Ariane, Magali, Thierry and Thibaud when they first arrived in Gloucester

Magali is introducing herself and her experience in french to friends she has made here in Gloucester and to friends home in Mallemort. If you wish to be in touch with her you can reach her best by email at…magali-excoffier@orange.fr

She would be so happy to meet more people who are in love with Gloucester.
