EVENT: Gloucester Writers Center 6th 10-Minute Playwriting Workshop Staged Readings. This fun event has been drawing crowds for the past few years, as audiences get to watch and provide feedback for these new 10-minute plays in progress (and for the first time, a few 1-minute plays!), all performed by the best of our local actors with food and wine to celebrate!
WHEN: Sunday, July 27, 2014, from 7 – 9pm
WHERE: The Rocky Neck Cultural Center, 6 Wonson St. Rocky Neck, Gloucester, MA
WHO: M. Lynda Robinson’s 6th 10-Minute Play Workshop is presenting the new work of Susan Frey, Carole Frohlich, Jeana Grady, Stacy Randall, M. Lynda Robinson and Charles Steiner.
Actors will include Emily Sinagra, Pauline Miceli, David McCaleb, and June Lewin.

Gloucester Police Department Sends Five New Officers to the Police Academy
After a process that included the Civil Service exam, a rigorous background investigation, physical exam, psychological exam, the Physical Abilities Test, 80 hours of training in Emergency Dispatch, and months of on the job training as Reserve Officers, Gloucester Police Chief Leonard Campanello is proud to announce that..
David D’Angelo, Robert Morrissey, Jared Foote, Michael Cimoszko, and Keith Gaudenzi
…have been selected to attend the West Bolyston Police Academy starting on July 20, 2014 and continuing for the next six months.
During this phase of their careers, they will be considered Student Officers. If they successfully complete the Academy, they will be assigned to a Field Training Program for 8 weeks, followed by a one year probationary period. At the end of that period, they will be permanent, full-time Gloucester Police Officers.
“I am very excited to have five new student officers entering the Academy. The process for them to get to this point was difficult. and they have shown that they are up to the challenge thus far,” Chief Campanello said. “I have very high expectations for these five. We only want the best candidates in the Gloucester Police Department, and the quality of these five candidates shows that we simply do not settle for second best. I anticipate that they will all excel at the Academy.”

The annual Rhumb Line Striped Bass Tournament is a family-friendly event and will be held this year on July 27th.
Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for under 16.
Registration includes a free T-shirt and a free cookout in our parking lot at the weigh in.
Sign up early and no later than Saturday night July 26th.

Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) ~ Notice the pretty moth nectaring from the milkweed in the upper right. The gardens are alive with pollinators of every species imaginable, including butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, songbirds, moths, and sundry insects!

Antennae for Design ~
The architectural details of the trellis and picnic table were designed to be a coordinated focal point in the garden and planned to be stained a classic seaside blue. Why would we want to paint or stain the trellis and not simply allow it to gain a weathered patina? From an aesthetic point of view, the wood used for both the picnic table and trellis are two different types and will age very differently from each other. If this were a very large garden, it wouldn’t matter so much, but in a cozy garden room such as this, the difference will become quite noticeable and unappealing over time. Additionally, the blue will offset the flowers and foliage handsomely and is a cheery choice with children in mind.
From a very practical standpoint, untreated wood will quickly degrade in our salty sea air and neither piece will last more than ten years without protection. An opaque stain is the best solution because as the trellis and picnic table age, the obvious differences in wood will be disguised. An opaque stain also requires the least amount of effort to maintain over time.
The above is a photo of untreated trellis, allowed to weather, and was installed approximately ten years ago.

Crazy as this sounds, I like the fog, the smell, sounds and how it makes my skin feel, like a facial. On Wednesday the fog was just awesome. Here a couple of pictures.

Found a Cell Phone
Found a cell phone at Stage Fort Park Playground Monday at 3:30. We handed it in to the visitors’ center. If you can tell them what kind, etc they’ll gladly return it to you.

“Oh My God, It’s a Rubber Duck!”
Let’s reel the tape back to 2004. The European Space Agency (ESA) shot a rocket off to land the spaceship Rosetta on a comet. Rosetta has been cruising since then, swinging past Mars and a few other planets to line up so when this comet swings by the sun on November 11, 2014 she will actually attempt to land on it! Here is where it gets weird. As it gets closer Rosetta has sent back photos of the comet. They are calling it a “contact binary” which means two comets collided very slowly a few billion years ago and stuck.
But on closer inspection the first ESA scientist to look at the photos said, “Oh My God It’s a Rubber Duck!”

I swear I am not making this up. Our own Rubber Duck is starting to act peculiar after I told her the news. I will be posting regular updates of the Close Encounter of a Rubber Duck as we get closer to the the actual contact on November 11. I will be interviewing EJ to find out if her higher beings have lost a bath toy.
[edit] Fun Fact. Rubber Duck rotates every 12.4 hours. So imagine a rock the size of Cape Ann (in diameter, dig the thing up and get a big ball), the head is Rockport, the body is Gloucester, the lips enclose Sandy Bay rotating in synch with the tides. Twice a day, jut like the tides the lips point towards earth and you can slip under the bridge without calling to raise it.

Gloucester PD was able to raise $3,770.00 IN Toss Your Boss Challenge

Hi Joey,
I just wanted to thank your readers and everyone who supported the Special Olympics “Over the Edge” and “Toss Your Boss” Fundraiser this past weekend at the Hyatt Regency in Boston. Gloucester PD was able to raise $3,770.00 and counting. I would like to especially thank our 3 biggest supporters: GORTONS, ST. PETERS CLUB, and PETER AND KATHY COAKLEY. and of course thanks to all who contributed to make this a success.
Scaling down a 23 story building is not my first choice of a Saturday activity. But I can tell you that the money raised was well worth it and the special athletes who were there to cheer you on was a big boost to anyone who was apprehensive. My “toss” went at 1pm and there were several Chiefs from neighboring communities to make sure I knew how high up I was. They also did me the great favor of filling out my “fun facts” sheet (which the event organizers read over a speaker system as you are descending). Because of this, I was able to learn all sorts of new things about myself, such as how I had always wanted to be a firefighter, but was afraid of heights or how I had special place in my heart for puppies and “My little pony”, or best of all, how I had a tattoo on my left calf of Barry Manilow. With friends like this supporting you…how could a Chief go wrong? It was all in good fun and when your dangling 200 ft. above concrete, it was nice to have a chuckle.
Was hoping to have some pics for you…haven’t got them yet. Much thanks to all who contributed.

Mom and Girlfriend make the Gloucester Daily Times!
It was really nice to see our mother Pat enjoying this past weekend with friends from the south shore, that she and our father met in Naples Florida where they all wintered together for several years. Friends Pat and Marie had mom laughing into the wee hours of the morning as they enjoyed each other company during their 3 day “Girlfriends Weekend” playing tourists by day and BFF Slumber Party by night! Thank you Pat and Marie for being such a great friend to our mother.
Mom Requested Muddica Steak Dinner at Niles on Friday evening… they were thrilled to catch the beautiful sunset while dinning on the beach!

More than just a Lighthouse Tour with Captain Donald Steele
Harbor Tours provides a tour of six Lighthouse tour on Cape Ann, (Ten Pound Island, Eastern Point, Straitsmouth, Thacher and Annisquam Lighthouses). The tour is far more; it is narrated by Captain Donald Steele; who gives the history of Cape Ann and the many points of interest; you seethe many islands along the coast line, local and private beaches, and some celebrities’ homes along the shore. As a Gloucester native he tells stories of the many storms, that occurred along the rough coast line of Cape Ann.
The tour is a must for locals and Gloucester visitors. In the slideshow you will see the many delighted faces of people on the tour that I went on this past weekend.
