Al Bezanson submits-

Effie, the pup at the helm of Ernestina, (ex Effie M Morrissey) will be greeting visitors at the SEMA table from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday at Maritime Gloucester.  This Effie is a Newfoundland, no longer a pup, and there’s no missing her.   The Schooner Ernestina Morrissey Association (SEMA) has important news to share on a restoration schedule and subsequent plans to put her back to work.  Now owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operated by the Schooner Ernestina Commission, she was launched as Effie M Morrissey in Essex 120 years ago to fish out of Smith Cove for the J F Wonson Fish Company.  We are very interested in talking to anyone with information on her early years working out of Gloucester.

We hope to see you at MG on Saturday!

Sister Mary Corita Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

August 21, 2014

To be disciplined is to follow in a good way
To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way

Consider everything as an experiment

Nothing is a mistake

There is no win

There is no fail

There is only MAKE

Don’t try to analyze and create at the same time

They are different processes

Be happy when you can manage it

Enjoy yourself

It is lighter than you think

There will be new rules next week.

Excerpted from the Immaculate Heart College Art Department rules

Sister Mary Corita (1918-1986)

image

Born Frances Elizabeth Kent, the Iowa native joined the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Immaculate Heart in 1936. She studied art at Otis College of Art and Design and the Chouinard Institute and received her BA from Immaculate Heart College where she laterbecame the Chair of the Art Department. She said her work was influenced by Buckminster Fuller and Charles and Ray Eames, with whom she enjoyed close relationships as she developed her signature style of painting and serigraphy, said by many to have changed the course of modern art. Corita Kent left the sisterhood in 1968, moved to Boston, and devoted herself to a highly successful life as a studio artist. Among her best known works are the “Love” postage stamp from 1985 and the controversial gas storage tanks on the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester which are said to contain the profile of Ho Chi Minh.

Public art: Justin Desilva bookmark and seagull question

Hi Joey,

Artist Justin Desilva has completed several more crosswalks: Our Lady of Good Voyage, Lobsters, Howard Blackburn, and St. Peter’s Square.    He’s had several requests for a postcard or some take away about his temporary project. If you see him, ask for a bookmark. Some of the murals are at different stages in their installation process; you will see him going back and forth to different sites. As this project is temporary, Justin will remove his work at the conclusion of his exhibit.

There is a Google map http://goo.gl/maps/mc696 with updated locations and photographs.

Gloucester Counts Down to Kindergarten streamed across the Sawyer crosswalk. Congratulations GPS, Sawyer Free, CAM, Art Haven and YMCA in partnership with the Boston Children’s Museum for planning what looked like a stellar, joyous event.

Question: Does anyone know how to persuade the seagulls to forego their perch atop the light above the crosswalk by City Hall and Sawyer?!

Maria Cracchiola’s Whimsical Cakes

Maria Cracchiola birthday cakemermaid ©Kim Smith 2014The kids (and adults) were wonderfully fascinated by Maria Cracchiolo’s mermaid birthday cake–the details were simply charming–with shade-dyed waves, sea creature candles, fondant mermaid, and chocolate covered rock. Believe me, it tasted as good as it looked!!

You may recall that we featured Maria making the special Saint Joseph altar bread  at Caffe Sicilia back in March. Maria makes beautiful, whimsical cakes such as this, by special order, and may be reached by calling Caffe Sicilia at 978-283-7345. New Bird Feeder

At the Waterfront Festival I bought an Edible Birdhouse/feeder. This bird feeder has the seeds all around the house. When the seeds are gone you can put peanut butter on the house and put more seeds on the peanut butter. The Woodpeckers are really loving their new feeder and here is photo of a Chickadee waiting and a Nuthatch enjoying their treats.

“MARCIA WILL U BE MINE” Graffiti on Straitsmouth Island

marciawillubemineMonday August 25, freshly painted on the gap end of Straitsmouth Island.

“MARCIA WILL U BE MINE?”

Marcia, here’s a tip, dump this loser and tell him to go row out to Straitsmouth and remove his stupid message.

You could also name him so we could publicly ridicule him too. That would be fun. Is he the D-bag who spray painted “MOLLY” under the Keystone Bridge?

Your boyfriend with the low IQ should not be dating material.

Imagine if it was a coyote and it was in a cage at East Gloucester Elementary and…

one of the animal pacifists kept telling everyone how harmless the coyote was and then they went into the cage with the coyote and then the coyote lunged at the animal pacifist’s neck just like this supposedly tamed lion did. That would probably be the only more ironic scenario than the one shown in the video below.

FULL VIDEO: Lion Attacks Teacher During a Circus, 16 August 2014 | Lion attacks teacher during circus performance as students watch in horror | RAW VIDEO

Schoolchildren on a day out at the circus were left horrified when their teacher entered the lion’s enclosure to prove the animal wasn’t aggressive – and was savagely attacked before their eyes.

and that my friends is why this guy ain’t going in no cage with any lions or tigers or bears. Oh My.

Any of you coyote lovers wanna try out this little demonstration for the kiddies? Probably be the best lesson on wildlife they’ll ever get.

September At Rockport Music great shows you won’t want to miss

September At Rockport Music brings guitarist Sharon Isbin, Joan Osborne and much more

This September, Rockport Music presents classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne, folk singer Melanie and the Celtic ensemble Cantrip, as well as National Theatre presentations and the Manhattan Short Films.

New concerts to the 2014-15 Season since the original announcement include:

Saturday, October 18, 8 PM:       Marcus Roberts Trio
Sunday, October 19, 5 PM:          John Hiatt Solo
Saturday, March 14, 8 PM:           Leo Kottke

On Saturday, September 6 at 7 pm, classical guitarist Sharon Isbin performs a concert including the Massachusetts’ premiere of her documentary Sharon Isbin: Troubadour.  A three-time Grammy Award winner, she has released more than 25 recordings covering a wide range of styles, genres and composers. She’s played with more than 170 orchestras over the world, has commissioned more concerti than any guitarist in the modern era, and has won numerous awards and accolades, including being the first guitarist to win the renowned Munich Competition.  Isbin’s music has ranged from Baroque to Spanish/Latin to crossover jazz to contemporary new music. Her documentary includes guest appearances from a wide array of luminaries including Michelle Obama, Joan Baez, Steve Vai, Stanley Jordan, Garrison Keillor, Mark O’Connor, Martina Navratilova and many more.  The evening includes an Artist Meet and Greet Reception following the concert. Tickets: $28-$46

On Friday, September 5 at 8 pm, the Scottish folk trio Cantrip perform at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. Expertly balancing tradition and innovation, the band—Jon Bews (vocals, fiddle), Dan Houghton (vocals, pipes, flutes), and Eric McDonald (vocals, guitar, mandolin)—infuses a modern sensibility to beloved Scottish folk tunes as well as their own compositions.  Originally a quartet, the band quickly gained a following in Scotland and signed with the well-respected Foot Stompin’ record label, for which they released their 2001 debut, Silver.  Their next two self-released records (Boneshaker in 2005 and Piping the Fish in 2008) further cemented their place among today’s premier traditional folk acts. The band has just finished its fourth album and their performance at the Shalin Liu is the CD Release Party.  Tickets: $20-$25

On Thursday, September 25 at 8 pm, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne will perform songs from her latest release Love and Hate, which combines her folk and jazz influences with her tremendous songwriting.  Rolling Stone magazine reviewed the new CD stating that “there’s a substance and depth here that is not easily achieved, and I think Osborne is getting more interesting with time.”  Well-known for her 1995 breakout album Relish with her hit song “One of Us,” Osborne was catapulted into super stardom with seven Grammy nominations.  In recent years, Osborne has worked in the world of blues and R&B, from which her love of singing began. In 2002 she cemented her reputation as a top tier soul singer with the acclaimed documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown and a tour with legendary Motown band The Funk Brothers. Earning a 2013 Grammy nomination, Bring It on Home was her first album composed entirely of covers in that genre, featuring songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Nina Simone and Otis Redding. Tickets: $39-$58

Folk singer Melanie performs for the first time at the Shalin Liu Performance Center on Saturday, September 27 at 8 pm.  A singer-songwriter known for her surprise starring role at Woodstock and her subsequent #1 hit “Brand New Key,” Melanie has remained an iconic voice for that generation.   Melanie was just 22 when she got her big break, being invited to perform at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Before that, the Queens native had been playing in relative obscurity in the Greenwich Village folk circuit. It wasn’t until after Woodstock, when she wrote and recorded a tribute to the festival and its attendees called “Lay Down” (Candles in the Rain)” that her star truly began to rise, the single hitting #6 on the pop charts. So began a string of hit singles and albums including “What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?” As the 70’s rolled along, Melanie continued to write and record, releasing a steady stream of albums throughout the years, retaining a cult audience enamored by her whimsical songwriting style and powerful emotive voice. Her most recent effort, 2013’s Ever Since You Never Heard of Me, was produced by her son, Beau Jarred.  Tickets: $28-$46
