I’m feeling a little down and out as the 2014 Red Sox season comes to an all-too-early-end this coming weekend.  I find myself reminiscing back to Opening Day and the giddiness that comes with new possibilities, green grass, crisp white uniforms, cold beer, Sweet Caroline, the boys of summer, and magical nights inside the hallowed grounds of the one and only Fenway Park.

Opening Days, especially those that involve a ring ceremony, always give me the chills.  I can’t get enough of the sound of the crowd, the vivid colors that blend together to paint a portrait like none other, and the goosebumps. I’ve been fortunate to breathe in the awesomeness of Opening Days from the field.  To look up and around….to pan the crowd…and see it in almost slow motion.   It may come as no surprise that I may possibly be the world’s biggest sap, but Opening Day gets to me in a way that I have trouble putting into words.  So, it isn’t supposed to end this way. The years with no post season play feel like a year without Christmas, July 4th, beach days, and grapefruit beer.  The horror.

For me, it isn’t just the baseball.  The post season is about the camaraderie that is palpable while ordering your morning coffee after a late night win, while coexisting with strangers during mundane errands prior to rushing home for the first pitch, or while cheering on the Sox at a local bar.  Never mind the 9 inning marriage of 37,400 fans cheering on the team inside the park!  It is impossible to not feel like all of Red Sox Nation are immediate best friends come late September and October….if, that is, we’ve made it.  Which, of course, we haven’t.

With no wild card run, American League Divisional Series, American League Championship Series….and, sigh, no World Series….I’m feeling like I’ve just arrived to a luxurious beach vacation and the weather forecast is calling for 7 straight days of torrential rain.  And that, my friends, may be an understatement.

Sure, we’ll fill these fall days with plenty of fun…but, something will be missing for sure.

Today, the humorous image is used to illustrate “the streetlight effect” in statistics and philosophy, a type of observational bias where people only look for whatever they are searching by looking where it is easiest.
The story goes: A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk replies, “this is where the light is.”

Big Mike’s Bikes Closing Up Shop

“We’d like to let you, our customers, know that Big Mike’s Bikes will be closing our doors on Friday, Oct 10. We have other work opportunities to pursue that in the end will be better for our family and most importantly let us spend more time with our kids. Running a bike shop was an amazing way to get to know this community, and we both feel blessed for the few successful years we had.
Until then, we’re selling all our accessories at 25% off – locks, helmets, bags, seats, etc. New bikes, while they last, will be $20-30 off, depending on model. We still have a ton of project bikes – if you are in the market to fix something up yourself, we have so many to choose from, and at reasonable prices.
Thanks for all the support – we hate to leave Gloucester without a bike shop, but we’re on to a new chapter in our lives. We’ll keep our website – sometimes we’ll still fix up used bikes and sell them on the side. We also will finally have time to work on some bike-related initiatives for kids here in Glouecster. In 2014 Lester Young will have been gone 55 years, yet this swinging star shines brightly in the film-in-progress. In the film, Sonny Rollins calls Lester “god”, and a god he was for many players who paid their dues at mid-Century. The four-minute trailer includes interviews with Sonny Rollins, Harry Belafonte, Wayne Shorter, B.B. King, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, George Wein, David Amram, Amiri Baraka, Junior Mance, and Gunther Schuller. Collecting these interviews has been an ongoing process for about two years. Here are some pictures from the two-year journey that resulted in this trailer.

As a longtime documentary veteran, my approach uses contemporary places combined with archival film, interviews and music to evoke our shared history. In President of Beauty: The Life and Times of Lester Young, the music and America’s troubled social history combine to evoke a sense of this much-misunderstood American genius.

We’re calling in a hazmat crew this week to clean up the mess that’s gonna be created out of the arrival of that famous Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. This guy really knows how to do it. He sings, he chortles, he squeaks out the most amazing renditions of vintage R&B with his own battery of weapons of mass deconstruction. You’ll see. This coming on the heels of the most amazing night last week when the Three Stooges of the Blues poked my eyes out . What a night!

1968: Howard Marston, Jr. (a.k.a. “Chicklet”) seated with his parents in
resistance to the SSS and the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam.
When I first met Chick Marston, I was a young teenager.
My friends had told me I had to “see this guy play guitar”.
A gang of us rode in Jon Pope’s van to his house in Rockport.
Pope wanted to sell him a gorgeous metal-flake blue Fender
Stratocaster. Only thing was, Chick had never touched an
electric guitar in his entire life! I watched while he fumbled
all over the thing and wondered what all the hoopla was about.
But it wasn’t long after that I got to hear him play his nineteen
thirty-something Martin and simply sat in awe. And, soon after
that, he was making national news, courageously refusing
induction into the Army and its gross, immoral war – his beloved
and highly intelligent father and mother by his side all the way.
He was my hero. Our hero. I wonder how many local residents
know about this little chunk of American History. You want an
