I have an opportunity for an ā€˜evidence-based’ research grant.Ā I am looking for a Cape Ann healthcare facility or school to collaborate with on a pilot study.Ā Please contact me if you have an interest inĀ research.

What exactly does ā€˜evidence-based’ mean? Ā

According to the American Holistic Nurses Association, ā€œevidence based practice (EBP) is the conscientious use of the best available evidence combine with the clinician’s expertise and judgment and the patient’s preferences and values to arrive at the best decision that leads to high-quality outcomes.ā€ Ā (Dossey, B.; Keegan, L. (2013.) Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice. 6th Edition. Burlington MA:Ā Jones and Barrett Learning.)

Once known as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM,) there has been a name change toĀ reflect the current trend in healthcare to use a more ā€˜integrative’ approach to healthcare.

In the past few days, I have heard some wood frogs, spring peepers, seen a few spotted salamanders. Ā So far, we are not exactly having the Big Night experience you may have heard about, but the Big Trickle effect you may be fasmiliar with if you’ve done this for a few years. Ā But, I think there will be some good action in some of our pools tomorrow night… so:

Ribbon Cutting for The Art of David Arsenault

CAPE ANN CHAMBER RIBBON CUTTING FOR THE ART OF DAVID ARSENAULT

ROCKPORT, Massachusetts – On Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the grand opening for The Art of David Arsenault.  The ceremony took place at the new gallery location at 26 Bearskin Neck in Rockport, MA.

Gallery owners David Arsenault and Sue Koehler-Arsenault introduced the gallery to a crowd of spectators and celebrated by cutting the ribbon before welcoming the public into their beautiful gallery. Refreshments were served and live music serenaded the many guests who visited and viewed the artwork in the two-story gallery space.

Arsenault’s work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life.

The Art of David Arsenault will be open seven days a week on Bearskin Neck for the 2015 season.

A. PIATT ANDREW BRIDGE DOORS ON DISPLAY AT CAPE ANN MUSEUM!

Comsos 12 Ā©Kim Smith 2014 copyDon’t miss this rare opportunityĀ to see the stunning bas-relief A. Piatt Andrew bridge doors up close!!

Free admission for Cape Ann residents on April 18

Two of four bronze doors from the granite faced pylons on top of the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge which brings Route 128 over the Annisquam River and into Gloucester are currently on display at the Cape Ann Museum. The doors were removed from the bridge late last year for much need conservation work and this will be the first time in over half a century that the public will be able to view the doors up-close.

skylight-studios-bridge-doors-conservation-2015-03-19_ hDesigned by sculptor John F. Paramino (1889-1956), the doors were cast at the T. F. McGann & Sons foundry in Boston in 1950. One honors the bridge’s namesake, A. Piatt Andrew (1873-1936), founder of the American Field Service, a U.S. Congressman from this district, director of the U.S. Mint and a long-time Gloucester resident. The second door celebrates the history of Cape Ann and in particular the fishing industry. John Paramino was born in Boston in 1889 to immigrant parents and studied modeling at the North Bennet Street School. He continued his studies under Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Bela Pratt and by 1916 had his own studio in Boston. Examples of Paramino’s public sculptures are scattered across Boston and include The Founders Memorial (1930) and the World War II Memorial in the Fenway (1947-1948).

skylight-studios-bridge-doors-conservation-2015-03-19_ eRoute 128, officially known as the Yankee Division Highway, was built between 1936 and 1958 on its current alignment as a bypass route around Boston. It was the first circumferential highway around a major U.S. city and now incorporates sections of I-93 and I-95. The A. Piatt Andrew Bridge is the crowning achievement of the decades-long Route 128 construction project and serves as a gateway to Cape Ann.skylight-studios-bridge-doors-conservation-2015-03-19_ a

OCTOGRAPHY!

Meet Rambo, the world’s first octographer! She lives at The Sea Life Aquarium in New Zealand.Ā After first destroying numerable cameras, once the teamĀ secured the camera, she learned how to take a photo in just three tries. Her trainer said that, on average, it would have taken a dog ten repetitionsĀ and a cat about twenty!

The photos cost $2.00Ā andĀ the proceeds go towards octopus habitat protection.

One of the best lunch deals in Gloucester may come at a surprise to some…

Last we checked, that’s even more affordable than your average meal at the drive-thru — and the food isn’t even on the same playing field!

Minglewood Tavern opens at noon daily, and is located at 25 Rogers Street.
