when I crossed under the Greasy Pole to finish a boat exploded over in the cut. To complete circumnavigation I had to go that way to get back to my car at the high school. The boat was burning like a big rubber duck.

Sometimes you just gotta cross the bridge

Last night, a number of our Gloucester friends came to the Robert Randolph & The Family Band concert we presented at The Cabot in Beverly, some of whom exclaimed, “Boy it’s just amazing that we can see this level of music so close to home!”
Indeed, Beverly is about as close as a national touring artist, the likes of Robert Randolph, is likely to get to Gloucester. So perhaps it’s time for us to extend our notion of “just down the road” to include Beverly, which is … dare I say … over the bridge.
Tomorrow we’re bringing three of the hottest Boston area bands to the Cabot stage: Boston Music Award winners Ruby Rose Fox and Jesse Dee with Salem’s Sarah & the Wild Versatile. We believe all three bands will soon be playing much bigger venues — that are much farther away than Beverly and — oh yeah — charge a whole lot more for tickets. ALL AGES seats for tomorrow’s concert start at $15 (the same as it costs to see Jurassic World at the mall). It’s a great show for your kids, who’ll be able to say “I saw them up close at The Cabot!” Good seats are still available here.
First Fish On!

Bluefin Blowout Kick-off Event: Captain’s Dinner
For those of you who may not be “in the know”, the Bluefin Blowout is no joke. We are incredibly fortunate to have this premier tuna tournament take place each summer in our own backyard. This weekend, Cape Ann’s Marina Resort is home to this fantastic tournament for the 4th year in a row.
Last year’s winning fish weighed in at an impressive 914 pounds!
This year’s tournament has over 40 boats entered, some pretty fantastic sponsors, and important ties to charities.
While a tremendous sporting event, the tournament more importantly honors the memory of Madelyn Rose Bouley, and proudly supports important funding needs within Child Life Services at Floating Hospital for Children. The tournament has also joined forces with the Boston Bruins Foundation!
So, come on down this weekend and be a part of the fun!

Charity Film Screening to Support Wounded Veterans
CHARITY FILM SCREENING TO SUPPORT WOUNDED VETERANS
Tickets are now on sale for the New England film premiere of “Darkness and Light,” a documentary featuring conversations with eleven wounded veterans, ten Marines and one Soldier, who happens to be Gloucester’s own, Austin Dorr, a Korean War combat veteran.
The film will screen at Rockport Music’s Shalin Liu Performance Center on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:30pm and proceeds will benefit wounded veterans via the Semper Fi Fund. View the trailer and purchase tickets here: http://rockportmusic.org/thi-wernaus-darkness-and-light/
Synopsis:
Rockport’s very own, Thi Linh Wernau, presents the New England premiere screening of her documentary film,Darkness and Light. In the film, Wernau interviews eleven wounded veterans, largely post-9/11 war veterans and Marines, through the lens of her photography series, “You. Are. Beautiful.” – a project celebrating the human spirit and beauty in all people. Themes around darkness and light emerge in these candid, unscripted and conversational interviews, and ultimately, these themes will tie back to one of the project’s main sources of inspiration: love. The audience will learn more about these wounded veterans, and get to know them simply as human beings. The veterans share messages that may help and inspire other injured veterans. By the film’s end, anyone, military or non-military, may discover a new place of understanding of how to find light within the depths of darkness.
Event Program:
6:30 – 7:00 PM: Artist talk
7:00 – 8:45 PM: Movie presentation
8:45 – 10:00 PM: Reception in the 3rd floor Reception Hall
(all movie ticket holders are welcome to attend)
This event is proudly sponsored by Wernau Asset Management.

GOOD MORNING IN THE GARDEN!
Two pollinator attracting beauties for your garden, bougainvillea and native spiraea, or meadowsweet (Spiraea latifolia). We keep our bougainvillea’s in the basement during the colder months and bring them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Both swallowtails and Ruby-throated hummingbirds nectar from the blossoms. Our native meadowsweet is a fantastic shrub for creating wildlife habitats. Not only does it attract a bevy of pollinators, it is also a food plant for the beautiful Blue Azure Butterfly caterpillars.
