International Dory Races
It was a great day of racing this past weekend with good match ups in all divisions, that are gaining momentum each year. US women’s team Amanda Palazzola and Lindsey Rogers in their 2nd year of dory racing competed in a close race to the very end losing out to arguably one of the best Canadian women’s teams of all time (Kath Moore & Gail Atkinson). The Junior men’s category showed two teams with similar boat speed but the Canadian’s John Ernst & Jack Smith navigated a superior course to a win over Tyler Edmonds and Thomas Beaton. I believe both of these teams will have 1 final year competing against one another in the Junior category. The US mixed team’s 18 year old Lily Jean Sanfilippo broke an oar on the start in her very first race. She was pretty rattled and had to row with unfamiliar gear, but made the US team and her partner Bill Edmonds proud with a valiant effort. Canada’s newly paired mixed team Danette Eden/Willy Wells looked like they had rowed together for years, and with superior course navigation and composure, they powered to a victory. The Over 50 match-up pitted last year’s US contenders Alex Thomas/Donny Favaloro against Canadian living legend Walter Nickerson (with 5 decades of experience and too many wins to keep track of) & 8 year dory mate and equally successful Danny Moody. There are not too many 50+ or younger who would like to see Walter and Danny line up beside them in a dory. As expected, Walter & Danny piled up another win for the Canadians despite the heart felt efforts of the Americans. And, in the final race of the day 3 time International Champs Glenn Harrington/Erik Dombrowski faced off with 5 time consecutive International Champs Joel George/Markus Schmidt. After a close race to the turning flag, the Canadian team executed a perfect approach and turn gaining a lead and extending it back to the finish line. Joel and Markus are excellent rowers with an unmatched work ethic in the dory, showing all the teams in the event the passion and dedication it takes to dominate dory racing.
A great day of racing in front of a good sized crowd after a very foggy start on picturesque Lunenburg Harbour was capped off by an afternoon/evening of camaraderie with US and Canadian rowers and friends rekindling long time friendships, swapping rowing stories and challenging each other with future competition to determine who has the world’s best dory rowers. Don’t miss the 2016 June International Dory Races in Gloucester, MA.
Best wishes and a sincere thank you to CDRA and the Nova Star for making this event possible, pleasurable, and exciting for all participants and fans. With all of your help, we have continued a 53 year tradition born out of schooner dory fishing heritage and national pride.

Massive Building Project on Main Street–Public Meeting August 27th 6:00PM at Rose Baker Senior Center from 6-8pm.
The property was once Cameron’s Restaurant which sold for $600,000 in 2010 and than sold for $975,000 to two non-profit organizations Action Inc. of Gloucester and North Shore Community Development Coalition of Salem, on Aug 6th 2015.
The plan as described in the Gloucester Daily Times on July 16th is to construct 30-40 affordable apartments with parking on about 9,000 square foot parcel of sloping land.
A public Meeting will be held at Rose Baker Senior Center Thursday August 27th at 6:00 PM, located at 6 Manuel F. Lewis Street.

Capt. Bill Muniz of FV Lily Helps NOAA in Research Project
Wicked Tuna Captain Bill Muniz of the F/V Lily assists a NOAA Team led by J. Michael Jech.  The project involves the tracking of Tuna using a Drone seen below with Capt. Muniz . his first mate and J. Michael Jeck and Jennifer Johnson also from NOAA. The project is part of the Large Pelagic Research Center.

Gloucester’s Middle Street – Guided walking tour offers historic perspective
An ever evolving neighborhood
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Historic Middle Street, a guided walking tour of one of Gloucester’s many historically rich streets, on Saturday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. The tour meets at the Cape Ann Museum at 27 Pleasant Street and lasts about 1 1/2 hours. Tours are held rain or shine. Cost is $10 for Museum members; $20 nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Space is limited, reservations required. MOSSE band members Andrew Luman and Jerry Smith are Gloucester guys and the band is kinda famous thanks to GoodMorningGloucester (here was the world exclusive post on GMG about MOSSE’s debut.)
Thursday’s concert will be free, fun and kid-friendly.

So There’s This Bridge… (Poll)
So there’s this bridge in Westwood MA where trucks just keep smashing into. It happens so often that someone has set up a video camera and put together a highlight reel of trucks smashing into it.

You’ll see in the video that the trucks look like they’re gonna clear it but I’m not sure if the road suddenly has a bump but BAM, they all smash right into it tearing their box trucks to pieces.
Ultimately it’s the driver’s fault because there’s a big low clearance sign on the bridge itself and another tiny sign buried among about 5 other signs.
Do you think the town could do anything differently to alert the drivers Like attach a huge billboard photo of the previous truck wreck where it says LOW CLEARANCE so maybe it will sink in better or do you think that it won’t matter and they should just let these truck smash-ups continue to occur? Another alternative would be to install a hanging sign about 20 feet before the bridge that would be the height of the bridge so if the truck hit the sign it would make a loud noise and let the driver know that he won’t make it under and he better stop.

 Live Theatre Performances for Young Audience Members Age 3 and Older
Gloucester Stage continues Playtime Stories, a fun combination of children’s stories, live performances and children’s activities for ages 3 and older, on Saturday, August 29 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. The stories set for August 29 are from Dr. Seuss: the new Dr. Seuss story, Which Pet Should I Get? and the classic tale of The Lorax. Following the performance, young audience members are invited to join Youth Program Director Heidi Dallin, Gloucester Stage Education Apprentices: Avery Daniels, Jenna Worden and Amelia Dornbush and cast members from the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop program for activities and theatre games. On August 29 young audience members can learn about Stage Makeup and be made up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character from the stories, play theatre games and participate in a craft. Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theatre as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage as well as the opportunity to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each week Playtime Stories explores a different story ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. All Playtime Stories’ performances are held at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Admission is $5. Poet Charles Giuliano at Annisquam Village Library August 27
The poet, Charles Giuliano, spent the summers of his youth in Annisquam.
On Thursday, August 27, at 7:30 PM he will return to his roots with a reception and reading from Shards of a Life at the Annisquam Village Library at 354 Leonard Street, rear.
The book of verse, which is available through Amazon, contains a number of poems related to growing up in Annisquam.
A second book Total Gonzo Poems which will be published this fall contains a chapter The Nugents of Rockport. On his mother’s side, Dr. Josephine Flynn, his Irish ancestors are an important part of Cape Ann History.
In 1875 Patrick and Mary Nugent, Irish immigrants, leased the 32 acre Beaver Dam Farm in Rockport from the Babson family. They raised 13 children of which three died tragically in 1913.
When Mary died in 1927 the farm was abandoned and later torched by local kids. All that survives is the stone kitchen from 1658. George Nugent bought land up the road on which is now located Nugent Farms a condominium complex. For a time George Nugent was the Boss Tweed of Gloucester politics.
There will also be a reading of selections of Nugent poems from the soon to be published book.
Now retired from teaching art history and running the gallery program for Suffolk University/ New England School of Art and Design Giuliano has an extensive career as a curator and critic. He also taught at Boston University, U. Mass Lowell and other colleges.
In 1970 he coined the word Gonzo which he was the first to publish in a July 3, review of Ten Years After at Harvard Stadium. At the time he was the rock critic for the daily Boston Herald Traveler. Giuliano is the only surviving original gonzo journalist. That legacy is the focus of his second book.
In addition to the Herald Traveler he was a columnist and editor of Art New England, contributor to Art News, the daily Patriot Ledger, Boston After Dark/ Phoenix and numerous publications.
Currently he lives in the Berkshires where he and his wife Astrid Hiemer publish and edit the on line digital magazine Berkshire Fine Arts.

Foggy Morning Music at Annisquam Lighthouse
I had a wonderful adventure early his morning looping around Cape Ann and listening for the clearest fog horn sounds to record. My drive began at the Paint Factory to listen for the Ten Pound Island fog horn, then onto Eastern Point Lighthouse, Thacher Island Light, and Straitsmouth Island Light, before landing at the lighthouse at Annisquam. For my purposes the Annisquam Lighthouse was perfect and I loved the combined sounds of fog horn, birds awakening, waves lapping at the shore, and the clanging of buoy bells in the distance. I think I got some good stuff!

A view from Hull
I spent my summers in Hull from the age of 3 to 21. My Nonnie bought a cottage on the bayside with a view of the bay and also Paragon Park. On August 19, 2015, went to visit a very close friend to visit her and her mom in Nantasket Beach. We went to the Hull Point and took this photo of Boston. The airport is only 7 miles away from this spot.
