Gloucester Stage Appoints New Managing Director

logo_font-tests_3base-webJeff Zinn Moves North to Gloucester Stage

Gloucester Stage Board of Directors President Robert Boulrice is pleased to announce that Jeff Zinn has been named the new Managing Director of Gloucester Stage, effective immediately. Joining newly appointed Artistic Director Robert Walsh, Jeff Zinn, a longtime New England theatre professional, completes a new Gloucester Stage leadership team. According to Boulrice, “Gloucester Stage’s 2015 season has been a real thrill ride, filled with wonderful accomplishments. We’ve enjoyed critical acclaim and sell outs for Out of Sterno and Gloucester Blue, which is being extended through October 11! The great news of Robert Walsh’s appointment as Artistic Director coincided with the resignation of Jon Wojciechowski, Gloucester Stage’s Managing Director since October 2014, who has moved on to pursue other creative opportunities. Jon brought the Welcome Project and Never Dark programming to Gloucester Stage, along with The Collaborative, a very energizing Apprentice Program, which will endure for seasons to come.” Boulrice continues, “Next came some really excellent news with the appointment of Jeff Zinn as our next Managing Director. Jeff brings a sterling pedigree and an impressive tool set to Gloucester Stage. The thought of Jeff Zinn and Bob Walsh working together leaves me breathless. Ok, forgive the hyperbole, but this is theater after all and the Gloucester Stage board is very excited for the future, starting right now!”

Artistic Director Robert Walsh enthusiastically welcomes Zinn to Gloucester Stage, “Jeff is a wonderful director, producer, and collaborator and has an extraordinary track record for bringing connected, passionate work to the stage. He is a consummate theatre artist and manager and I couldn’t be more excited to partner with him to continue and grow the work at Gloucester Stage.”

Solo bass concert?  Are you kidding me? It’s hard enough to sit through a bass solo, you want me to go to a solo bass guitar concert? Are you nuts?

WMichael Manring by P Lissart 3ell, not in this case. Michael Manring, who first became known as the Windham Hill house bassist in the 80’s for his work with seminal artists Michael Hedges, Alex DeGrassi, and Windham Hill founder, Will Ackerman, has expanded his range tremendously over the past three decades.  Michael is musically conversant in every conceivable genre and has appeared on hundreds, if not thousands of albums ranging from jazz to folk, rock and roll, new age, classical, and full on heavy metal.

But Michael’s passion is, and always has been, about showing off the versatility of the four string bass whether it’s his custom Zon Michael Manring Hyper Bass that’s tuned much higher than a standard bass and is capable of over 1000 different tunings all while he plays, or his fretted Zon bass Vinnie, or what he’s best known for; his 4-string fretless bass playing that he learned at the feet of the bass-master himself, Jaco Pastorius.  He can make the bass sound as if you’re hearing a shaman raise his voice in prayer in an ambient piece of music, or raise the hair on the back of your neck as he takes you on a death spiral of 64th notes played at breakneck speed. And he can play all three basses at once as evidenced by his song “Three Moons” which has been viewed well over a million times on YouTube through various videos of the song.

KenLouisePRGloucester resident, Ken Bonfield, who toured with Michael heavily in the late 90’s and early 2000’s will open the concert and join Michael for a duo or two. Here’s what Bonfield has to say about him. “Michael Manring may not be the best bass player in the world, but there’s no one better.  And the bonus is, he’s an even better person than he is musician.  You just really need to see and hear Michael to understand what this man is capable of playing on just 4 strings. Seeing is believing!”

Massachusetts: Good Morning Gloucester

Welcome back to Gloucester.  You can read the first article on this area by Clicking Here.  For those of you that watch television, I am told this is the setting of a show called “Wicked Tuna.”

Although Gloucester was the first settled area in Massachusetts, residents soon moved to Salem because the soil was more fertile there.   But the great natural harbor pulled them back and this became the country’s first viable seaport.

Colonial Massachusetts had a requirement that any town with over 100 families have its own school system, and records show that Gloucester complied with this in 1698.  So this has been a thriving community since well before the American Revolution.

Flu Shots. Check.

I try each year to make our appointments early enough that the boys may be lucky enough to get the nose spray, but they were out of luck this year.  A round of shots for us all!

I went first and, even though I thought it was wicked funny to shriek and yell “OUCH”, (That’s right, Mother-of-the-Year) the boys stepped up no problem and each took one in the arm.

So, if you catch the flu this year (and I really hope that you don’t!), chances are it isn’t from us.

The “New” Old Cart At The Dock @CaptJoeLobster #GloucesterMA

Here’s the “new” old cart Brian O’Connor found on Craig’s list in Haverhill and I picked up Friday morning.
The “old” old cart I claimed at an old industrial site in Chelsea and it was being thrown away about 20 years ago. I had no idea what the brand was, all I know is that it was extremely rugged. The type of rugged that could withstand the brutal saltwater conditions of a lobster dock year in and year out. In the Craigslist ad the man listed the similar “newer” old cart as a Fairbanks cart so I googled the company and found out they are still in business.
http://www.fairbankscasters.com/
from the website:

For more than 125 years, the Fairbanks Company has been shipping quality material handling equipment from our manufacturing facilities in Rome, GA. Our facilities encompass more than 200,000 square feet of production and warehousing space. To maintain our leadership role in the industry, we have modernized our facilities with the latest in robotic welding, electrostatic powder coating and CNC machining of wood parts.

These techniques have resulted in the expansion of our product offerings, making us a premier supplier of casters, wheel, handtrucks, platform trucks and dollies.

THE “NEW” OLD CART

image

You can see the difference between the “new” old cart and the “old” new cart in that the cart below has it’s main load carrying wheels based in the middle of the cart so if you place the load in the middle there is a even disbursement of the weight and makes it easy to move on the larger wheels. They call it a tilt style cart.  The “new” old cart has the two big wheels pushed further to the front corner of the cart and two big casters at the back.  In the “old” old cart you could turn it 360 degrees in place, with the placement of the wheels on the “new’ old cart it will be slightly less easy to maneuver but will make it easier to pull the crates off of the platform of the cart without the cart wanting to rotate needing for another person to hold the handles while the other worker pulls the crates onto the platform scale.  Also the weight bearing wheels on the “new” old cart are much larger.

Here’s the “old” old cart that has been used to offload millions and millions of pounds of lobsters over the past decade.

Photo_1_6334L to R: (Latham) Robert Walsh; (Stumpy) Francisco Solorzano

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED NEW ENGLAND PREMIERE CLOSES  SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11

The New England Premiere of Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester Blue ends its run at Gloucester Stage on Sunday, October 11. Directed by Mr. Horovitz, Gloucester Blue takes place in the attic loft of an old industrial building in The Fort section of Gloucester owned by the upscale Bradford Ellis IV also known as Bummy and his wife Lexi. Working class housepainter Stumpy has been contracted to refurbish the building and he has hired Latham, friend-of-a-friend, to help him complete the job. As the play opens, Stumpy and Latham are hard at work, spackling damaged walls and applying fresh plaster and primer. Out of work for the last six months Latham is grateful for the job. When Lexi shows up with paint color samples, a story of intrigue, seduction, betrayal and money is set into motion in this dark comedy. The New England premiere of Horovitz’s newest Gloucester play has received unanimous rave reviews during its run at Gloucester Stage.
