NAUSET LIGHT ~ A BEAUTIFULLY CARED FOR AND BELOVED ICON OF CAPE COD

Nauset Light Eastham Cape Cod ©kim Smith 2015Nauset Light, moved from its previous precarious perch above eroding bluffs, is today beautifully maintained by the Nauset Light Preservation Society, a group of dedicated locals who are committed to preserving and interpreting its important story for visitors.

From the Nauset Light Preservation Society website: The Coast Guard owned Nauset Light and had no plans for saving it. Modern instrumentation has diminished the need for lighthouses. However, the lighthouse is still used by the fishing fleets and small recreational boaters who navigate close to the shore. Nauset Light is an important part of Eastham’s cultural and maritime history, and is the most well-known and photographed lighthouse on Cape Cod.

A group of citizens in Eastham formed the Nauset Light Preservation Society, a non-profit volunteer organization whose original mission was to rescue the lighthouse. This was accomplished in November 1996. Read More Here.

The Paper House

The Paper House

Many of you have probably visited The Paper House at one time or another if you grew up in Rockport or Gloucester.  I remember visiting it as a child when my grandmother (God only knows how she found it) took us there.  My mother and I went to visit it again yesterday.  It is a cool tucked away little treasure in Pigeon Cove, well worth a visit if you’ve never been, or a nice memory to return to if you haven’t been in years.  It was built by Elis and Esther Stenman, who must have been a very unique and interesting couple.  You can learn more about it at http://www.paperhouserockport.com/index.html.  It seems to always be open, and is run on the honor system, where you leave your $2 admission in a metal mailbox by the front door of the main house.  There are signs, but it is a little tricky to find.  From Rockport, take left just before you reach the Tool Company, go up a little and take a left and then your second right (watch for signs).  It is #52 Pigeon Hill Street.  Coming the other way, take the right up a hill, right after you pass the Tool Company, then first left and second right.

If you look closely, the 2nd photo includes The Boston Post edition from April 16, 1924, in which the Sox apparently lost with 24,000 fans watching.

Fill ‘Er Up

So, this has been making me happy.  Super cheap and conveniently right down the street from my work.

If you happen to be “over the bridge”, “up the line”, or simply out of town and could use a top off or a fill up, head to the Shell Station on Brimbal Avenue in Beverly.  The construction in that area (making room for the new Whole Foods) could be a bit of a deterrent, but if you’re in no rush….it is totally worth it!

E. O. Wilson Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Competition is intense among humans, and within a group, selfish individuals always win. But in contests between groups, groups of altruists always beat groups of selfish individuals.”

E. O. Wilson (1929-    )

An Alabama native, Wilson, blinded in one eye at age 7, took up the study of insects shortly thereafter and is today recognized as the world expert on ants. A Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Harvard for forty years, he has won the Pulitzer Prize twice for books illuminating his work for scientists and laypeople alike. His work on eusocial species, (ants, termites, wasps, etc.) lead to controversy when he applied his findings to humans, positing evolutionary and genetic causes for human behavior, such as religion, rather than strictly cultural influences. It was Wilson who coined the term “biodiversity” the protection of which he continues to advocate as necessary for our existence. His recent books, The Social Conquest of Earth and Letters to a Young Scientist are highly readable accounts synthesizing his decades of research in fields of inquiry not always closely related.

Joe Orlando 2015 Gloucester Ma Candidate For Councilor At Large Election Video

An Offer To All #GloucesterMA Election Candidates:
gmglogohires

As you all know we don’t take political stances here or endorse candidates but what I’d like to offer is an invitation for any candidate that is running for office in Gloucester to submit a video explaining why they think they are best suited for the position they are running for. The easiest way to do this would be to upload the video to YouTube.

The videos will be released once and placed on GMG at 7PM on the following night that they are received. If more than one video is submitted to me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com then the first one that is submitted will be aired the following evening at 7PM and the next one submitted will be posted the following evening at 7PM. There will be a link in each candidates post containing their video to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com which will have all previously submitted candidate’s videos.

Once they are submitted they will be added to https://2015gloucestermaelection.wordpress.com/ where all the videos will be available for viewing at any time on the same page.

In the title of the video it should list the candidate’s name- position they are running for and the words “GMG submission”.

As always the GMG politics disclaimer- any post on these pages containing a candidate does not imply an endorsement for any candidate. Comments on www.goodmorninggloucester.com for these video submissions on the blog will be turned off for these posts as well.

Hopefully this will serve to help candidates get their message across.

Good luck and thank you to all that participate in the process for the love of Gloucester and making it better.
