It’s a biggie! Yes, yes, Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle is back in town this Thursday, comin’ at you with his atom smashing style and vaporizing sorties. it’s always a big deal to play with this guy…always takes a couple of days to recover…like a couch. Just back from a tour of Atlantis, our pied piper is dragging in the same vibrating rhythm section as last week.

seARTS art loan @ Bass Rocks 2016 and Cape Ann Plein Air panel

seARTS 9th and biggest art loan installation at Bass Rocks Golf Club opened last night. Visitors to Bass Rocks Golf Club will be able to see the art of 14 artists selected for this year’s seARTS art loan, and it’s all for sale. As if the art, food and party weren’t enough, the reception included brief panel talks about the national Cape Ann Plein Air festival that will kick off this October 11-16, 2016. 

Artists interested in competing in Cape Ann Plein Air make sure to apply by the July 14th deadline.

Friday 6/10 Meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club

Friday night, 8:00 pm at the Lanesville Community Center is the June GAAC meeting, featuring a group of astrophotographers presenting some of their best work.

We’ll get to see a multitude of colorful pictures of all kinds of celestial objects, learn what each object is, what’s noteworthy about it, how big, how far, and we’ll find out a little bit about any challenges the photographers faced in getting the shot. All in all, this promises to be a terrific, informative and enjoyable night.

This annual program is always a favorite, so come early and grab a good seat, grab something good to eat, and enjoy a memorable night out at GAAC. Weather permitting we’ll even get to do a little observing of the first-quarter moon and a planet or two after the meeting.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester MA, at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month, for presentations, discussions and activities related to observational astronomy. Thre is plenty of free parking, and there is no cost. And, if healthy, wealthy, and wise is just an alarm clock away……. we’ve got a spot for you to get on that project.

City Council Voted (7-2) to approve an increase in miscellaneous trash fees effective August 1, 2016

On Tuesday, June 7, 2016, City Council Voted (7-2) to approve an increase in miscellaneous trash fees effective August 1, 2016.

The increases are as follows:

The cost of 36 gallon trash bags will be $2.25 each (sleeve of 5 bags will be $11.25)

Appliance Stickers will be $30 each. (Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, Televisions, Computer Monitors, etc).

Bulk Item Stickers will be $10 each. (Furniture, Rugs, and other large items not appliances that will not fit in purple bag).

Please note, the cost of the small (15 gallon) bag remains the same.

The Senior Center will continue to sell large bags (5 per month) at a discounted rate of $1.50 each, to residents who are at least 65 yrs. old and who currently participate in the City’s trash and recycling program. Proof of identity and address are required.

Our alphabet garden at the Children’s Campus at Phillips Andover is coming along beautifully. In its second year, I’ll post photos later in the season as the garden begins to fill out and come into full bloom.

Thanks to Pam and her wonderful staff at Wolf Hill for locating our letter Q  plant, the towering ‘Queen of the Prairie.’ She is a gorgeous beauty for the back of the border, growing 5 to 7 feet tall, with panicles of deep pink and purple streaked lacy foliage. Can’t wait to see this native bee and butterfly attracting beauty in bloom!

Gloucester Stage Company proudly launches the 2016 season of  Playtime Stories, an engaging combination of children’s stories and live performances for ages 3 and older, on Saturday, June 18 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theater as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage. Following the performance audience members will be invited to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each Saturday the Playtime Stories Company, consisting of members of Gloucester Stage’s apprentice company, veteran Youth Acting Workshop students and special guest narrators will perform a children’s story against the backdrop of the story’s illustrations as well as create a dynamic weekly series of interactive events related to the story. According Youth Acting Workshop Director and Teacher Heidi Dallin, “We had a great response to the Playtime Stories program last summer. It is a terrific way for YAW to reach out to younger audiences to spark their excitement in live performance. Many of the veteran YAW students in the Playtime Stories Company have been involved in the YAW program since they were 5 years old and now they will inspire the next generation of YAW students!” Each weekPlaytime Stories explores different stories ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. The books for June 18 are the classicThomas The Tank Engine and Friends: Thomas Goes Fishing, Based onThe Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry and The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch. Upcoming books to be read and performed by the Playtime Stories Company include The Three Little Pigs and The Little Red Hen onJune 25; Curious George and Little Bunny Foo Foo on July 9. Other Stories planned for July include Virginia Lee Burton’s Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Rumpelstiltskin, and the Dr. Seuss classics, The Lorax and What Pet Should I Get?  All Playtime Story performances are held at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Blackburn Challenge July 16, 2016 is 38 Days away

OK, so the Blackburn Challenge has a new twist this year. After you register you get an electronic bib number mailed to you connected to RaceJoy. (Click for info) This software will track everyone in the race. Not sure exactly what “spectators” will see but likely you will be able to follow someone in real time around the course. You could follow Rubber Duck or even better, follow someone who is speedy.

We have 38 days to figure it out. Rubber Duck will post a test run on Facebook or here. Anyone out there who has experience with RaceJoy please speak up in comments. It would be cool to see all the contestants race around Cape Ann but that is a lot of dots. Ask your friends who race in triathlons. I bet they have used it.

Tin Can Sally is the second artist in the Summer Artist Series at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck. Her show opens on Wednesday, June 8, with the gala opening reception on Saturday, June 11, from 6-8 pm. The public is invited.

Tin Can Sally (Sally Seamans) creates birds, fish, jewelry, collages, mobiles, and more from printed tin containers of all shapes and sizes. She finds tins at yard sales, flea markets, antique shops and serendipity. She is a tin hunter/gatherer. Some of the tins she uses are olive oil, cookie, coffee, tea, candy, biscuit, soy sauce, mustard, ethnic foods, popcorn and sewing tins. “I greatly appreciate any tins that are kindly recycled my way,” says Semans. She is also known as Sally Seamans of Gloucester, MA
