Pick #2: Fish Box Derby
Sunday, Rogers Street by Gorton’s
Every year since 1994, the Fish Box Derby has offered the kids of Cape Ann the opportunity to test their design, building and driving skills in a safe and exciting race down Rogers Street. We have purposely stayed independent from the All – American Soapbox Derby so that parents and kids could work together on the cars and the everything from buggy wheels to high tech bearings are allowed. There is no entry fee for the race, we are fully supported by charitable donations from individuals, businesses and local organizations, whose names are emblazoned on the hay bales that line the course. Through the generosity of our supporters, the Fish Box Derby now offers two $1000.00 college scholarships each year, for which all racers are eligible. It has been truly rewarding to see our former participants take lessons learned in the race with them into adulthood. To help support the Fish Box Derby please contact us at Fish Box Derby, Inc. PO Box 162 Gloucester, Ma. 01931-0162 or call 978-283-1932 or 978-281-6057

CAPE ANN TRAIL STEWARDS
Good Morning Gloucester received a nice note of appreciation from Cape Ann Trail Stewards president Nick Holland. I went to their website to learn more about Cape Ann Trail Stewards. They are a non-profit, all volunteer coalition founded in 2012 and their primary focus is on helping municipal landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain, and expand Cape Ann’s trail network. They match volunteer trail stewards to trails in need of stewardship, and organize trail work parties.
I am super excited to learn more and looking forward to exploring some trails with Nick. Thank you for writing and letting us know!!
Cape Ann Trail Stewards Mission Statement: Trails, from meandering paths to stony fire roads, connect Cape Ann communities across borders, public and private land, and diverse natural landscapes. CATs helps to maintain existing trails, improve access and promote the responsible and safe use of the Cape Ann trail system and recreational areas. CATs works with municipalities and like-minded conservation organizations to protect and preserve land for its recreational and ecological values. CATs promotes the understanding of the wildlife and natural resources of our woodlands and wetlands.

Banning Polystyrene Food Service Products
It took until 10:15 last night, but we are thrilled to announce that the ordinance phasing out polystyrene food service products was accepted by City Council, for a healthier and more sustainable tomorrow. Our plastic bag ordinance is going back to Ordinance and Administration for some last touch-ups, but it does so with significant support and momentum.
We are so thankful for everyone who took the time to attend the meeting and share your opinions, for those who emailed in comments of support, and for our youngest supporters in the ‘Plastic: Pick It Up’ club for being unafraid to speak out. Your voices have been heard, and change is coming!
The One Hour at a Time Gang wishes to thank you all for your hard work. When we are out picking up, plastic bags and polystyrene are everywhere. Next we need to take care of the butts people throw right out their windows. The Butt Butlers have helped.

Who’s buying tickets to movies, art and sporting events? New findings from US Bureau of Labor Statistics plus Health & Retirement Study
All ages! See details from a new report released yesterday by the US Bureau of Labor statistics which charts various data sets (mostly 2012-2015):
or in article PDF form
For example, this chart lumps together movies, art and sporting events

Also a September 7, 2017 report has more findings about the health benefits for seniors who create art and attend art events.

From the Health and Retirement Study (#HRS) Washington, DC—Older adults who create art and attend arts events have better health outcomes than adults who do neither is one of the conclusions in a new report published by the National Endowment for the Arts. Staying Engaged: Health Patterns of Older Americans Who Engage in the Arts presents the first detailed look at arts participation habits, attitudes toward the arts, and related health characteristics of adults aged 55 and older. Staying Engaged is based on results from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), conducted by the University of Michigan with primary support from the National Institute on Aging within the National Institutes of Health.
Gloucester knows this well! One big example is from the Council On Aging (COA) Rose Baker Senior Center Art Program. Its mission statement under the direction of Juni VanDyke: To connect Gloucester Senior Citizens to their community through worthwhile art projects while encouraging artistic individuality and collaboration.

Plastic: Pick It Up Club Kids Lotus, Pilar, Atticus, Meadow, and Frieda
The proposed ban on the use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) cups and containers in the City of Gloucester passed City Council by a vote of seven to two. Voting in favor were Councilors Melissa Cox, Sean Nolan, Scott Memhard, Valerie Gilman, Jamie O’hara, Paul Lundberg, and Joe Ciolino. Voting in opposition were Councilors Joe Orlando and Steve LeBlanc. The ban will be fully implemented in January 2019.
The vote on banning single use plastic grocery bags will come again before the City Council in October, with some slight wording changes to the petition.
Ainsley Smith of Gloucester’s Clean City Commission wishes to thank all who came to the meeting last night in support of the ban and thanks everyone for all that they have done, and are continuing to do, on behalf of the citizens of Gloucester and their efforts to make Gloucester a clean city.
Really proud of our neighborhood kids for having the courage to come before the City Council.
Terrific turnout at the City Council meeting to ban plastic single use bags and polystyrene to go cups and containers.
