GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION

presents

The Musicians of the Old Post Road

‘Christmas with the Bach Family’

Friday, December 14, 2018, 7:30pm

Corner of Middle & Church Street, Gloucester, MA

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Musicians of the Old Post Road, a renowned New England chamber music ensemble

consisting of violin, viola, cello, flute and harpsichord, will perform seasonal works of Johann

Sebastian Bach and other composers of the Bach family with distinguished vocal soloists in the

historic (1806) Gloucester Meetinghouse.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Musicians of the Old Post Road return for their 3rd season in the Meetinghouse. They will

present a banquet of Bach family works for the holidays including Johann Christoph Friedrich

Bach’s rarely-performed and delightful oratorio Die Kindheit Jesu, along with a sumptuous

sampling of arias from Christmas cantatas by Bach brothers Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm

Friedemann, cousin Johann Ludwig, and of course, Johann Sebastian Bach.

The ensemble is joined in this concert by soprano Jessica Petrus, mezzo-soprano Catherine

Hedberg, tenor Jonas Budris, and baritone Bradford Gleim.

The Musicians of the Old Post Road is a chamber ensemble, based in the Boston area, that

specializes in the period instrument performance of dynamic and diverse music from the

Baroque to early Romantic eras. Its repertoire includes compelling “rediscovered” works that

have been lost to audiences for centuries. Audiences and critics agree that Old Post Road’s

approach to historical performance is fresh and engaging. In 1998, the group was chosen as the

recipient of the Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society. The

ensemble has toured North America and Europe and has six CD recordings to its credit.

Founded by Artistic Directors Suzanne Stumpf and Daniel Ryan, the ensemble takes its name

from its acclaimed concert series, originally entitled Old Post Road Historic Concerts, begun in

  1. 1989. The concert series brings period instrument performances to historical buildings such as

meetinghouses, churches, mansions, and museums. The venues trace the route of the old

Boston Post Road, the first thoroughfare connecting Boston and New York City beginning in the

1670s. The ensemble’s repertoire stretches from the late 17th to the mid-19th century, the

exact period of the Old Post Road’s importance. In 2006, the ensemble was featured on WCVB

television’s Chronicle program about the history of the old Boston Post Road.

A WHALE OF A TAIL AT THE PAINT FACTORY

“Dive Deep Within” – Goetemann artist Deborah Redwood’s sculpture at the Paint Factory

Don’t you love the scale of Deborah’s piece? Much like Gloucester’s most beloved statues, the “Fishermen’s Wives Memorial,” “Man at the Wheel,” and “Joan of Arc,” “Dive Deep Within” is built to a very human scale and blends beautifully with the environment. “Dive Deep Within” is a statement, but does not try to compete with or dominate the surrounding landscape. Read more about Deborah’s piece here:

Deborah Redwood

and visit her website here: https://www.deborahredwood.com/

When I look at the subtle artistry of “Dive Deep Within,” I am reminded of the humungous abrasive metal sculpture that our community has been highly pressurized to accept, to not only find a suitable location for its installation, but to pay for its fabrication as well. One suggested site was the tiny narrow strip of green grass on the Rocky Neck causeway. When that location was wholeheartedly rejected, the next attempt was to locate the sculpture at the beautiful, but again very small, Solomon Jacob’s Park. This suggestion was especially nonsensical because the Solomon Jacob Park was specifically designed to be an open window to the working waterfront.

Monumentally large sculptures like that perhaps look best when sited in vast open spaces, a midwestern prairie or on a farm field; at a similar place where from the artist has made his home for most of his life, rather than Gloucester’s stunning waterfront.

Greatly appreciating the scale and intention of Deborah Redwood’s “Dive Deep Within”

Inspired by ROTC, there will be a telethon cookie dough booster fundraiser for the GHS boys basketball team on December 10, 2018 from 4-6pm. Team players will speed dial for one hour to try to sell as much cookie dough as possible in that time. Fundraising goes back into the program to assist with the banquet and maybe some swag. Please email Rosa rmortillaro@gloucesterschool.com if you’d like to be added to the ‘cookie call list’ December 10th to help support the team. Rosa has helped GHS sports teams for years. Maybe this year the kids will get some team spirit sweatshirts or gear.

SNAPSHOTS OF WBZ CARL STEVENS AND POSSIBLE HUMAN REMAINS FOUND

As part of my Piping Plover project, I often stop by Revere and Winthrop beaches when heading to and from job sites in Boston and Cambridge. While at Revere Beach yesterday, several TV news trucks pulled up in front of the police station and cameramen set up their cameras. I imagined perhaps another whale had washed ashore but bones of what are believed to be human have been collected by police.

I briefly met WBZ’s Carl Stevens and cameraman (both super nice). So sorry I didn’t get the cameraman’s name for the photo caption. If anyone knows, please write.

I didn’t have time to stick around and learn more although not much else is know at this time.
