Young and Salty

We were on our good friends’ boat the other day with their 3 children, our two boys, and two additional cousins.  As we watched all of the children laugh and chill on the bow while we made our way around the back shore of Gloucester, he said, “I love that these kids are all growing up so salty.”

Well, me too.

Today the boys asked if I would do a post in which they could talk about how they haul lobster traps.  How do you say “no” to that!  So, as they hauled some gear, I took a bunch of photos and they taught me what was up along the way.

A converted eastern rigged side dragger. Not sure if this boat is fishing at the moment. It has moved from mooring to mooring in Gloucester Harbor for the past year.

Wicked Tuna Special on Cape Ann TV TOMORROW (WED) @ 6:30 P.M.

Don’t miss the premiere of this very special Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow night at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  This special was shot on location at Alchemy Bistro (at the same time as Nat Geo was shooting) and Mile Marker One.  Allen gets some of the Wicked Tuna captains to tell him what music they play aboard ship for good luck catching fish.  Then he performs his Howard Blackburn hit “Not With Ya Hands” for them.  Mix in a Wicked Tuna Seafood Throwdown and a few other surprises for a show you don’t want to miss.  Here’s a short preview of the energy you can expect from this show!

Lobster Cove, 1916

The peninsula called Annisquam is bordered by Ipswich Bay (Atlantic Ocean), the Annisquam River (which makes Gloucester an island), and Lobster Cove. The cove is protected, and therefore a preferred anchorage and mooring area. Judging by the lack of boats in Lobster Cove, this looks to be spring (May 26th to be exact). Annisquam is across the cove, and Wingaersheek is in the distance across the Annisquam River. The geography of Cape Ann is a visual buffet for photographers and painters, and its beauty is here for all to enjoy.

Smith Cove in East Gloucester was, and still is, populated by both fishing and pleasure boats. In the background of the photo is East Main Street, with Banner Hill rising above it. The boats, from left to right: Harpoon sword fishing boat "Jaguar" (previously named Lord Jim and also a WWII submarine chaser), owned by Dr. Fred Breed; "Jumping Jennifer," Tom Morse's fishing boat; Party fishing boat "Winner III," owned by Bobby Anderson; and the "Naomi Bruce III," co-owned by Cy Tysver and the Shoares family. Vessel histories are complex, and all comments and corrections are welcome.

Of wooden boats and iron men
Former fisherman pays homage to disappearing industry

Paul Ciaramitaro grew up working on the Gloucester waterfront, in a family where money was hard to come by. His hard-knock life has been marked at various periods by the back-breaking work of both fishing and working on the wharves, by addiction — not uncommon among waterfront workers and fish hands — and the constant struggle to earn enough money to stay afloat.

But Ciaramitaro’s lifelong penchant for drawing never waned, and as an adult, he has transformed his childhood passion into a career as an artist. He is about to host a solo show, “Wooden Boats and Iron Men,” that will open the season for the North Shore Arts Association next Thursday, April 24.

He has put these scenes to canvas so vividly because he worked them for nearly two decades, and Ciaramitaro wants to pay homage to an industry that is struggling to stay in existence with strict government restrictions, limited days to fish, and ever-increasing costs.

“I wanted to draw fishermen. This business is dying,” said Ciaramitaro, now 64. “I think fishing captains would be proud and honored to know that they are continuing to be remembered. Gloucester exists in history because of the fishing.”

Another Local Lobster Trap Tag Shows Up On Perranporth Beach Cornwall England!

Dear Joe,

I wrote to you in November 2012 about a fishing tag from the Net Profit, from when it was owned by the late Joe Ciaramitaro.

Last Thursday I found a tag from F/V Endeavour. When I looked it up on Google it looks as though it comes from your area, so I thought that you might be interested. I don’t find many of the rectangular tags, all the ones that I have found are mounted on a board on my garage wall. I thought that you might know some of their owners or where they come from.

As you will see from the photo we do find quite a lot of lobster trap tags. Here in Perranporth  Cornwall most of the them are from Newfoundland and Labrador. We have had a lot of storms this winter & unusually high tides for the last three months. This has resulted in large quantities of plastic being washed up – some from across the Atlantic & a lot from more local places.
