BG Brown Summed Up What Was Going To Happen In The Fishing Industry In Gloucester 4 Years Ago

This was filmed in 2010 and it’s only gotten worse. What he predicted back in 2010 is about 10 times worse 4 years later.
As I type this a fisherman just left my office. He is 52 years old and has fished his whole life. He is a stern man meaning he has no stake in what the owner of the boat may receive when he sells out his commercial fishing permits. He has only seen it get worse and worse and was telling me he has absolutely no idea what he could do for a living since all he knows is fishing.  It’s sad and it is despicable what they did when they instituted Catch Shares and privatized the ocean and fish. Before Catch Shares there were hundreds of small boats with stern men who could go out and catch 800 lbs of cod under the “Days at Sea” program. They could fish every day and because there was an 800 pound limit there were no 20-40,000 lb trips of fish on the auction to decimate the price. What was on the Fish Auction for fish was made up of lots of small boats 800 lb trips of quality day boat fish.  So you had hundreds of boats with hundreds of captains and hundreds more of stern men making a good living while barely impacting the fish stocks. Boats were being repaired, boats were buying fuel, families were being fed.  Now we have probably 80% less.
Just years later the hyper-consolidation of Catch Shares which we all knew was the inevitable result when you privatize a natural resource has decimated our fleet and the number of fishermen left standing while they most have either sold out or are trying to.

Back in 2009 I started to collect the stories and add them to a thread on Cape Ann Online as sort of a journal and record for those who might have said they didn’t see this coming. There are three pages of articles from fishermen and about how it was and has decimated our working port and independent fishermen.

Gary Clark, Jr. ~ the guy to watch tonight

You probably already know that it’s Grammy night, tonight – 8pm on CBS.  You’ve got plenty of time to bop down to Giuseppe’s to see Renee & Joe at 6pm, before the show starts. When you watch the show, look for one of our favorite young artists, Gary Clark, Jr., who is up for 2 awards:

Best Rock Song

and Best Traditional R&B Performance (for a very different sounding song)

Gary is extremely talented and great live.  Watch his star rise over the next year or two.

“A huge duck would f*** you up” — Bruce Springsteen

On Jan 14 — for the benefit of Joey, Paul M. & RD — Bruce Springsteen settled the matter on Jimmy Fallon.  Here’s what he said in response to a question posted on Twitter:

This was, of course, the same night as the “Gov. Christie Traffic Jam” bit which is at least as funny:

Bruce couldn’t make it to the Rhumbline tonight, but Dan King is filling in for him with special guests Charlee Bianchini & Bill Gleason at 6pm — and that will be an excellent show.  Check out the full weekend live music schedule here.

Kendrick Oliver & New Life Jazz Orchestra @ Shalin Liu SAT 8 FEB benefit for NMYO

Wow, these guys can swing!  Here’s a great way to help support student musicians and have fun doing it.  From their concert page:

Award-winning conductor Kendrick Oliver and his youthful, vibrant and energetic 15+ piece orchestra (including a vocalist) will light up the stage for a night of infectious sound. New Life Jazz Orchestra has been selling out concert halls and turning heads throughout the jazz scene since its inception in 1995 while Oliver was a student at Berklee College of Music. Respected throughout the jazz community, New Life Jazz Orchestra has appeared at a host of high profile events including the Boston Beantown Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, and opened JVC’s prestigious Newport Jazz Festival.

This evening will be nothing less than a swing, sing, stomp, and shout experience!

Diabolical New Coyote Defense Technique For Deer

Adapt or Die Baby.  Flat Out One Of The Most Brilliant Defense Mechanisms On Display I’ve Ever Seen.

I don’t care how hungry that coyote is that’s creeping up on the deer.  Deer lets one rip like this and the pack of coyotes are like “We out man.  I don’t want any part of that stank ass!”  Diabolical!!!

I’m guessing that was a three day old chili fart.  Had to be right?  I just hope the deer had some toilet paper laying around so it could do a wipe check.  Don’t want any poop remnants that might have snuck out making your deer butt all stanky.  Gotta at least give it one or two test wipes to make sure it’s all clear back there.

That deer in West Gloucester that got surrounded by the coyotes last year could have learned a thing or two from farting deer.  Would have saved itself a whole lot of time and aggravation during the standoff.  Shoulda just let one rip and that pack of coyote would have high tailed it back to Canada STAT!

BTW this post is for new subscriber Bill.

See, Now This Is Why You Don’t Get Cute With Mother Nature

How many when there are huge waves on the back shore do you see people venturing out onto the rocks? Not a great idea. Must respect mother nature, not thumb your nose at her.

We can talk about him all we want, but there’s just no substitute for the real thing.  Dr. King is one of the greatest orators of all time.  His brilliantly written speeches are full of musical references, quotes from songs, poetry and metaphor — all woven into a moving piece of performance art.  Dr. King’s voice is lyrical and musical.   It’s like hearing a great song — as entertaining as it is profound.  Enjoy!

You Gotta Be A Special Kinda Person To Wanna Be A Goalie

Like, bring it all and heap it on my shoulders. More times than not you could be the goat but you just don’t care. You step up and say bring that shit to me.
Fire away. Take your best shot. I can’t imagine the frustration that comes with being a goalie.
This video pretty much sums it up though.

Frank McCall Lanes Cove Storm Video II

Hi Joey,

I took another walk to Lanes Cove after I finished my shoveling today. The water level was higher than yesterday’s high tide and the breakwater had quite a bit more splash-over. If you watch carefully, you will see water pouring through the breakwater as well. I could not stand in the same place where I took my video yesterday because that location was underwater!
