47 Motor Life Boat Tour At USCG Station Gloucester With MK1 Kurt Lubbers

This is The First Part of A Ten Part Video Series-

CWO2 Luis Munoz extended an invitation to GMG to come down to the USCG Station Gloucester and see what it’s all about in anticipation of the upcoming Boating Safety Event. GMG Contributor Manny Simoes and I spent a fantastic morning at the station.

The entire crew at the Station was incredibly friendly and courteous and I can’t thank Chief Warrant Officer Munoz enough for the access he granted us..

In our first video we have FOB (Friend Of the Blog) Kurt Lubbers give us a tour or the inside compartments including the Survivors Compartment, Engine Room, Auxiliary Machinery Space, and All The Way Inside The Hold of The Boat.

You are cordially invited to attend US Coast Guard Station Gloucester’s Boating Safety Day.  This multi-partnered community event kicks off National Safe Boating Week on Saturday, May 21st, from 9am to 3pm and will take place at USCG Station Gloucester.  Our boating safety partners involved in this event include Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, State of Massachusetts Marine Environmental Protection, commercial fishing safety representatives and many others. The goal of this community event is to put all aspects of boating safety back in the public eye as we approach our spring and summer boating season.  We will showcase an assortment of search and rescue demonstrations, structured boating /paddling safety and Boating Under the Influence (BUI) forums, flare demonstrations, commercial fishing vessel safety, tours of Station Gloucester and vessels, as well as various informational booths.

Roger Babson Riddle Video From Thomas Soucy

Thomas writes-

Located in Cape Ann Massachusetts there exists a ghost town called “Dog Town”. In that wooded area there exists an unusual hiking trail that includes viewing about 30 boulders that have carved inscriptions.

Roger Babson (1875 – 1967), a descendant of the Dog Town hamlet’s earliest settlers was a founder of three colleges, eccentric and moralizer. He even spent time trying to discover ways to defeat gravity…

Source: Dog Town a Village Lost in Time by Thomas Dresser

As a ‘moralizer’ Babson hired out of work quarry people to carve sayings on boulders in Dog Town. The appearance of the carved boulders seemingly has no pattern. But after some thought we discern three groupings: ideals, ideas to implement them and truths.

  • The ‘ideals’ are: Integrity, Loyalty, Industry, Spiritual Power, Initiative, Intelligence and Kindness.
  • The Ideas put forward to implement the ideals are shown after each Ideal boulder.
  • Also the truths, when appropriate, are shown.

As a ‘moralizer’ Babson left us with a riddle. What is he telling us by his legacy of boulder inscriptions in Dog Town (a modern day ghost town)?

During his life he tried to find ways to “defeat gravity”. Hatred is gravity. Hope, faith and love are uplifting or anti-gravity (as are his wonderful sayings)!

What follows is a video that depicts the Babson Boulders:

The Rabbit Covers The Massacre Bout For GMG

Let me fill in the blanks as Joey the interview guy extraordinaire failed to make an appearance. ” Life on the docks is what it is right….? ” My buddy at times cant event get out for a few hours…No worries I was on the scene to witness the best Derby bout in two years for Boston Massacre. That’s right Steel City Vs. Boston Massacre was amazing right from the start. Lots of energy and I will post a YouTube link so you can see some early hits….I also found one online of the final victory lap. In a dramatic ending Boston Massacre won and the fans went absolutely bananas. After talking to Feev’s on the sidelines a GMG favorite she expressed how excited she was to skate against a new team. Not only that they are going on the road soon to ME for the first ever bout in Portland 4/23/11. Combine that with allot of new faces this year and you get the picture. Lots of energy and I’m Really exited about the coming bouts…The rest of the stuff remains the same at these events. Cold beer, warm cheeseburgers, great atmosphere, and a kick in the pants delicious cupcakes. By Kickass Cupcakes from Somerville of course. I’m so fat I ate like three. Now after I blabbered on a bit this is the numbers but in no way do the explain how fun it was….I don’t want to add but I have to…..How Wicked Pissahs trounced the Nutcrackers and Anita Bangher was on fire. I guess sometimes you have a off day as some sports team do have. Maybe it was that dang mascot with the wings running around that drove the Wicked Pissah energy through the roof. I know for sure the Nutcrackers will work on the game before their next bout. The bottom two links are the start and finish..I also have a couple for Wicked Pissahs Vs. Nutcrackers.

First Jam

Last Jam

Joey add this under the title after you read it over…..I was at Roller Derby WINNING!

MVP’s I should also mention this…

Anita Bangher (Wicked Pissahs)
Speed Metal (Nutcrackers)
Maura Buse (Boston Massacre)
The Shocker (Steel City)

CBS News Needs To Figure Out The Difference Between A Dolphin and A Porpoise

Mendy Garron, NER Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator explained this to us last week when we were trying to ID several Common Dolphin and Porpoise Sightings In Gloucester Harbor on March 17th and 18th.

In last night’s headline CBSBoston.com incorrectly titled the headline-

Dead Dolphin Found On Revere Beach

They went on in the story about how it was a porpoise here’s an excerpt-

REVERE (CBS) — A dead harbor porpoise was found on Revere Beach Saturday morning. It is the seventh harbor porpoise that the New England Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team handled in Massachusetts this week. Six of them were dead when found. The seventh had been stranded in a salt marsh in Saugus and is doing well not at the University of New England’s Marine Animal Rescue Center in Biddeford, Maine.

The Aquarium says all of the porpoises found were yearlings that were underweight and had probably just been weaned from their mothers in the early winter. This leaves it up to them for forage for food through the winter.

For the rest of the story click the highlighted link above.

Hey screw-ups happen.  Nobody’s perfect, least of all your boy Joey.  Just thought I’d point it out for ‘em.

Here is the difference as we reported last week in this series of posts including video.  I wonder if the harbor porpoise that washed up was the guy bouncing around Gloucester harbor 10 days ago?-

ID dolphin/porpoise/whale For Bill

Posted on March 17, 2011 by Joey C

Hey Joe,

We had a little dolphin/porpoise/whale in the cove on Thursday. Whatever it was it was definitely a cetacean. In this shot, it was only about 50 feet from shore, and the water was only 5-6 feet deep, so I’m thinking it was a lost pup that got separated from it’s pod.  I’m not sure what species it was – but its color was very dark – almost black, the dorsal fin was swept back and pretty small, so it could be a pilot whale pup.  As far as I could tell it was only 4-5 feet long with not much body mass.

Does anybody want to help identify it?

Thanks,
~Bill O’Connor

Mendy Garron Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator Reports On Common Dolphin In Gloucester Harbor Yesterday

Posted on March 18, 2011 by Joey C

Hi Joey,

I did see the video and this too is a harbor porpoise.  Below is a picture of the common dolphin from yesterday (photo provide by USCG).  As you will notice, the dorsal fin is much more ‘hooked’ shape compared to a harbor porpoise.

Thanks so much!

Mendy

Cooking Fried Whiting With Sista Felicia Video at The Taste of The Times

Click here to view the video at the Gloucester Times Website

Deb Clarke just asked me how Felicia seasons her fried whiting.  I answered her on Twitter but not sure if she ever got it.  In any case here you can see exactly how it is done.  Fried Whiting is my very favorite fish to eat.  I could sit down with a pile of salted fried whiting and a couple of cold beers and have an incredible feast.  The pure white flesh of the whiting is the tastiest fish ever.  You eat it like corn on the cob and the meat falls away from the bone easily.   In my opinion the most underutilized species we have today.  It also make an incredible soup.

Here are some pictures from a couple of weeks ago at Felicia’s house-
