As you probably know by now, I am working at the Amesbury Sports Park, a huge, fun events complex with great food, obstacle races, concerts and all kinds of off-the-wall events. I am having a blast on big projects and more fun festivals than I’ve ever done before – and anyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m working hard to lure my people up to this neck of the woods to check out what the park’s new owners are up to and to see more of my folks around more often. We have just started bridging that off-island gap with the addition of Dan King’s Bandit Kings to our "Rally on the Sun" Sunday Music Series, a Spartan race training style boot camp run by Gloucester’s own Danny Vadala and an exclusive tent rental deal with Taylor Hedges at the Event Company who I’ve worked with on many events in my days with Lat43 and Alchemy.

But you know how we like to keep our people nearby and I’m super excited to share what I’m doing, so I’m pitching you a "friends and family" deal for our next event , June 16th Musical Chairs Festival – to entice you up to my new digs on the northern "North Shore".

I hope you’ll join us – it will be a wicked fun day of music, games, tubing and OGO rides, a mechanical bull, bag drop, paintball range, good food, beer, my company, of course, and a shot at fat cash and a place in history.

Details below.

Come up and see me!

Cheers,Jennifer

Hey Joey,

If GMG readers are looking for a summer beach-read, the novel “Purgatory Island”, which starts and ends in Gloucester, might fill the bill.  It’s a fast paced, maritime adventure set during the Civil War.  Purgatory Island is a horrendous Confederate Prison camp.  Three mariners from New England follow different paths in the war, but end up in the camp.  The major character is a Gloucester schooner fisherman, another is a whaler from Nantucket and the third is a schooner captain from Salem.  Fishing on the Grand Banks, hunting whales in the Pacific and transporting lumber on West Coast schooners all play a role in the tale.   No one has ever escaped from Purgatory Island.  Unless the mariners put their heads together and come up with an escape plan, they’ll soon be dead from disease or starvation.

The book is available in hardcover and Kindle editions from Amazon.  The cover paintings will soon be on display at the Annisquam Art Gallery.

Tony Marolda, Annisquam

International Dory Race Eliminations Final Results From Damon Cummings

The men’s open division final, which was whittled from 9 teams to 3 teams on Saturday, ran tonight off Niles Beach. 1. Mick Cote/John Swift 9:05 2. Ray D’Amico/Joe Cominelli 9:07 3. Erik Dombrowski/Glenn Harrington 9:09

The race was the most exciting I have ever seen with the boats neck and neck all the way out and making the turn all together at 4:38. Conditions were difficult with 12 – 15 winds from a little East of South and serious chop. An unattended power boat was anchored in the couse making navigation difficult particularly for the Dombrowski/Harrington crew. The lead changed several times on the way back to the beach with all three boats overlapped at the finish. The New Jersey team of Mick Cote/John Swift will be going to Lunenburg. Well done everybody!

Correction- Basking Shark Jason Bolcome Photographs Great White Shark Off Of Rockport and GMG Has The Pics

I am Jason Bolcome, I was flying around Gloucester in my piper warrior when I heard over the radios information about a great white shark off rockport. I went back to beverly airport and picked up my friend Paul Beaulieuj who had a good camera and we decided to head off the cost of Rockport at 4pm and look for it. About 8 miles east off the coast of Rockport we started spotting large schools of fish and whales when Paul spotted a fin in the water. We then flew to investigate the fin when we had realized it was the great white shark everyone was talking about. I am no expert however comparing the size of it to the fishing boats my educated guess is that it is about 20ft long. Paul then began to take pictures as I flew the plane.

What to do with Round Rocks? Make Art.

The backyard came with a bunch of round rocks. Sort of out of place. The cut granite left over from quarrying is cool but these round ones want to be back on a beach. But at 80 to 180 pounds they aren’t going anywhere fast. Sue wanted them to be sprinkled past a garden so it would look like a dry riverbed but that didn’t work. Now she wanted them out.

What to do? 30 yards was as far as I was going so Ted and I rolled them out of the way into a nice pile. They still looked kind of stupid but then a lightbulb went off.

Why not make some art? What do you think? Ted is taking the under that they won’t be upright next weekend. I’m taking the over because I think they will last forever.

ps. If you bet the under and then sneak over and push them over Rubber Duck may have a webcam set to record motion. Great for the Cat Birds. Are the Cat Birds more funny then usual this year? They are acting like they got into some ripe catnip.

Last Quarter Moon Last Night

A thin photo of the waning quarter moon taken at moonrise at midnight. Off to the right are the lights marking the Rockport Breakwater.

Rubber Duck Fun Fact #1: The moon is in its last quarter. But if you were standing on the moon what would the earth be? … Give Up? … First Quarter.

Rubber Duck Fun Fact #2: At dawn the moon will be straight up above us. It is also the direction that the earth is moving as it goes around the sun. We are moving so fast that if the moon suddenly stopped in its tracks we would smack into it within four hours. That is why you can see better shooting stars after midnight closer to dawn because we are facing into space in the direction we are traveling. You get more bugs smacking into your windshield than your side windows.

The Obnoxious Bike Rider Rant

I’d first like to state for the record that I am a huge supporter of all forms of bike riding, bike riding competition, bike riding for fun and bike riding as a means of transportation.

I am also all about bike rider safety and hope all bike riders wear light colored clothing with reflectors and take every precaution to keep themselves safe on the road.  Now that I’m older and my eyes get worse and worse each year I understand how difficult it can be to  see dark objects at night and why the reflective strips and light colored clothing is.  I hope everyone everywhere respects bike riders and bike riders safety.

imageNow having said all that I would like to ask a little favor of all the bike riders out there.  For the love of Christ if you are out for a bike ride could you please please please stay as close as you can safely stay to the right hand side of the road?

As I was just coming back from making a lobster delivery I get behind a row of about 10 bicyclists.   Out for a leisurely ride and on busy rogers street about half of them are 6-7 feet into the middle of the road while there is a line of cars behind me and a ton of oncoming traffic on the other side of the road.

If you safely hug the right hand side of the road I’d have no problem passing right by you but you grape smuggler funny bicycle short wearing bananaheads feel it necessary to take up the whole road.  I could floor it and squeak around your inconsiderate ass but that’s not my style.  As the Mrs constantly reminds me I drive like a grandmother, a slowpoke.

And why is it that there seems to be a correlation between the outrageousness of the bicycle outfit and the obnoxiousness of the road hogging.

Like the crazier the outfit the more of the road the feel they own.

I ask that if you are a bicycle rider and again you should be commended for trying to stay fit with such a great outdoor activity, but please try to be considerate of the folks that share the road with you and stay as closely to the right hand side of the road as you can.  Us motor vehicle operators want nothing but the safest of driving environments for you.

Thank you

You just know this dude doesn’t give a shit who is behind him-

Forget about these guys- I’m guessing they ride in formation five across, blocking entire lanes while holding conversations about their nut sacks and how they could possibly mash their junk up more.-

Call Me Ishmael

Call Me Ishmael

Not long ago I took one of my usual walks

to the waterfront .  It was not, as Ishmael says,

during a damp, drizzly November in my soul, but  in

the real chill of a drizzly Gloucester afternoon.

Despite the gloom, I found myself not alone

on the Harbor Cove boardwalk near Lat 43.

At the far end, among the traps, sat a man feeding the gulls,

looking out over the bulwarks of the nearby boats.

The scene reminded me of the rest of Ishmael’s

opening observations: there is something

that draws “almost all men in their degree  *  *  *

to cherish the same feelings towards the ocean with me.”

Those feelings compel us to choose the water’s edge

even when a snug room or restaurant  is nearby and

might  provide some comfort, say a cup of soup or tea;

but we decide to stay outside to watch and feel and wait.

We, who, unlike Ishmael, cannot “sail about a little

and see the watery parts of the world” still drift to

beach and marsh and wharves just to gaze and stare,

and let our senses absorb and our imaginations soar.

Sarah Saputo Needs Some Shoe Advice. Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

Sarah asks-

Dear Joey,
I don’t know if you can help me or not but I thought I would ask you and your readers who may be fishermen if they can help me save my new Sperry boat shoes.

I was walking along Magnolia Beach when my foot sank into the seaweed and mud with my new leather and partial canvas boat shoes.  My shoe actually came off and I couldn’t even see it in the muck and I had to dig it out. The smell is horrific (maybe sewage empties into Magnolia beach?)

I tried washing them with dishwashing liquid and leaving them out in the sun but they still smell.  I know fishermen get into more smelly situations than what I described.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Please send me a link.

Thank you.  I don’t have much money and any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

-Sarah

Hi Joey!

Great storm last nite!

I don’t know if this hit the house across the street – maybe there’s a large crater in Gorton’s parking lot? It made close contact because our whole house shook… duck and cover!  (freehand, scared-witless!) Thanks, Christy
