New Orleans Fun ~ more than New England usually allows

Let’s face it folks, we, in New England, are known for being kinda stuffy, right?  Isn’t that why we’ve welcomed Henri Smith to Gloucester?  Isn’t that why we do our level best to keep him here year after year?  Yes, he’s a fine musician.  Yes, most of his friends are all top talent too.  Yes, he infuses Gloucester will all kinds of culture we’ve never before experienced.  But let’s be honest.  He’s fun!  And so are his super-talented friends.  Just look at this video:

Don’t these guys just look like they’re having the time of their lives?  We need more of that — and we’re going to get it on June 3o when Henri gathers the most talented, fun-loving New Orleans musicians you can see north of the bayou at North Shore Music Theatre to open for the iconic for Aaron Neville (get tickets here).  Henri’s band will include:

Stanton Davis on Trumpet
Amadee Castenell (from HBO’s Treme) on Sax, Flute and Vocals
Herman Hampton (Berklee professor) on Bass
Daniel Heath on Trombone and vocals
Les Lumley (from Ghetto Mysticism) on percussion.
Charles Burchell  (from New England Conservatory) on Drums
Ben on Piano (you know him)
PLUS A SURPRISE GUEST!

Now for some fun tonight (see full music lineup here) we have to mention one of Gloucester’s most talented and fun musicians with an acerbic wit, Inge Berge, will be at the Dog Bar with his trio.  See what we mean by wit and fun in the video below:

Lost Cat

His name is Monty.  He’s a Maine Coon with double paws and is 11 years old.  He lives and was lost in Rocky Neck.
I really appreciate this.  My name and number is Rose, 508-932-7777.

Young Poets at the Sawyer Free Library

The winners of the 10th Annual Poetry Without Paper contest were honored last Thursday (June 7) at the Sawyer Free Library. Director Carol Gray welcomed all and introduced Mayor Carolyn Kirk. She began the evening by reading a poem written by Amy Dengler, “Conch,” which illustrated quite impactfully the power of words. Mayor Kirk presented Gloucester students of elementary, middle, and high school age, with their awards (a certificate, a book of poetry, and a cash prize). The students read their winning poems in front of a full audience that included family, friends, and poetry fans. The winning poems will also be featured on the Sawyer Library website. Sponsored by the Lyceum Committee of the Sawyer Free Library, the contest drew almost 300 entries from students attending various schools in Gloucester.

GONADS WANTED!!

Bluefin Tuna Gonads Wanted!!

Bluefin Tuna Sampling Program

Project Goals:
• Collect Otoliths and Gonads from bluefin tuna to develop current age and growth profiles and to characterize size/ age at maturity. Currently, stock assessments utilize age data from purse seine fisheries collected in the 1970’s for fish ages 1-3. Growth for larger size classes of fish are estimated from a small number of individuals. Age at maturity has been estimated based on GOMex longline bycatch, not gonads!
• Identify the mixing rate (East vs. West Atlantic) and stock structure of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Maine, and to identify differences in rates across years and between cohorts. First studies showed high mixing rates in the mid-Atlantic Bight and low mixing in the Gulf of Maine. Gulf of Maine results so far are based on small numbers of fish sampled over short time periods. We seek to significantly expand this dataset to establish patterns across years.
How can you help? WE NEED TUNA HEADS and GONADS!

Contact Walt Golet 207/351-5413 (walter.golet@maine.edu) or Molly Lutcavage 978/283-0269 with questions regarding this program
Otoliths are located towards the base of the skull. To ensure they stay with the head, remove the head about 4 inches back from the eye (see photo). This is where most dealers will make the cut.

Molly Lutcavage and Walt Golet need local fishermen’s help in collecting important samples of otoliths and gonads from bluefin tuna caught this season. These samples will aid in research that will help answer important questions about the bluefin stocks. Please go to the following link to find out how to help in this effort!

Sir George Savile Quote of The Week from Greg Bover

June 11, 2012
"Popularity is a crime from the moment it is sought; it is only a virtue where men have it whether they will or no."
Sir George Savile, First Marques of Halifax (1633-1695)

image

Among the foremost intellectuals of his era, Halifax was the son of minor nobility. He served in the House of Commons, and later, the House of Lords, after being raised to the peerage in recognition of his service to the King. A centrist in an age of extremists, he navigated between Catholic and Protestant interests, eventually siding with William and Mary during the revolution of 1688, and urged them to follow a path of toleration. During their reign he was elected Speaker of the House of Lords and eventually rose to Lord Privy Seal. An early advocate of publicly funded education, Halifax is among the most quotable of English statesmen, having written numerous essays on the moral and ethical place of the state in the everyday lives of men and women.

Amadee Castenell from HBO’s hit series Treme Joins Henri Smith on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre

Yesterday we featured Stanton Davis and Les Lumley from Ghetto Mysticism.  Today it’s Amadee Castenell, who has recorded and toured with Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint — with whom he appears in the HBO hit series Treme (Amadee is to Irma Thomason’s left in this video) and many others.  Amadee joins Henri Smith’s band on sax & flute June 30 opening for Aaron Neville at North Shore Music Theatre (get tickets here).  At about 3 minutes into the video below you get an idea of Amadee’s virtuosity — starts out slow and subtle, then wows the audience!

Now that it’s summer, there’s more to do on a Wednesday night in Gloucester.  Lots of good people playing (see full music lineup here), but we just have to mention the first solo appearance by Dylan Estes (Allen’s son) at Giuseppe’s tonight.  He’ll start about 8:30.  We’ll be there with John, the Zip Line Kid.

Pet of the Week-Big Sur

Oh my!  I am on GoodMorningGloucester and everyone visits this site.
I bet I will be adopted in no time!

Pet of the Week Big Sur Cape Ann Animal Aid

My name is Big Sur and I am loveable kitten who is residing at the beautiful Cape Ann Animal Aid, which is now housed at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter at Four Paws Lane in Gloucester.

I am a sweet boy who is light black-and-white with a pink nose.  I am a small cat, but I have a warm and large personality.  If you would like to see more photos of me, check our web site at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com

We do have a wish list here at the shelter – you will see when you visit our site.  We are in need of dustpan broom combos, wall mounted broom/mop holders, cat litter scoopers, Staples gift cards (for assorted office supplies and furniture items)

Please save July 21 for our Sunset Dessert Cruise from Captain Bill’s at Harbor Loop at 7 p.m. Tickets will go on sale in a few weeks.

This new shelter is so fantastic, I am climbing on the play tree and it is so much fun.   If you haven’t seen our new shelter, plan to visit us.  Remember, don’t forget, I repeat, don’t forget, it is okay to bring toys for shelter dogs and cats!

I wonder if Joey might be interested in adopting me or another nice person at GMG?

Kettle Cove Fish Market, circa 1900

Kettle Cove Fish Market, circa 1900 Anonymous/©Fredrik D. Bodin

The Kettle Cove Fish Market was located on Ocean Street in Manchester, on Kettle Cove marsh and near Black Beach. Coolidge Point is in the distance. Proprietor John Heath is on the right, John Gardner in the middle, and the other man is unidentified. It is probable that the market bought lobsters from Civil War veteran Jacob Dow, who I wrote about in Good Morning Gloucester about a year ago. The building, which was built over the marsh, was demolished and removed in the early 1970s.
