AFRICA FINALE
This final sequence takes us to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, a visit to a family living compound in a rural village, the primary school, some heavy bargaining in town, a short, but bouncy, elephant safari and a farewell from our friend Mthokozisi.
This trip was only 17 days, but it opened up a whole new world for us.
Our thanks to Overseas Adventure Travel (Boston), their outstanding staff and guides and to the people of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe who granted us the privilege of visiting their magnificent lands.
Lost Cat
“Hi Joey, Not sure you have a lost and found section for pets… our cat has been missing for 2.5 weeks and I have exhausted all avenues. Someone mentioned posting on GMG… I love your blog, but have never posted. If you have a lost and found section, could you please post this picture and information about our very missed small cat… Thank you.”

Joey: New for 2013, as Gloucester’s historic fishing industry struggles under tightening Federal regulation. Our traditional Cape Pond Ice logo on a Comfort Colors Khaki T-Shirt features Leonard Crask’s Gloucester Fisherman Statue on the front, with our snowflake serving as ship’s wheel, and the monument’s "They That Go Down To The Sea In Ships" from Psalm 107, Verse 23 on the back, with the dates "1623-2013".

Henry David Thoreau Quote of The Week From Greg Bover
“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.”
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Sometimes called the first environmentalist, Thoreau, born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, was mentored by the Transcendentalists Ralph Waldo Emerson and Bronson Alcott, his neighbors. His book Walden, about the two years he spent living in a hut he had built himself on Emerson’s woodlot at Walden Pond, has become a classic of American literature for its introspection blended with natural history. His Civil Disobedience, written as an explanation of his non-payment of taxes as a protest against the Mexican-American war, is still influential, and his books on his journeys to Maine, Canada and Cape Cod go much deeper than mere travelogues. Thoreau is also credited with the invention of raisin bread.

ARCADIAN WINDS was founded at Boston University in 1987 as a woodwind trio consisting of flute, clarinet, and bassoon. The ensemble expanded to a wind quintet in 1989 and has since premiered almost 50 new works and championed many others. As recipients of Chamber Music America’s “Residency Partnership Grant” in 2004, the Arcadian Winds provided a year-long intensive chamber music experience for students in the Boston Public Schools, culminating in a performance of a commissioned piece by Daniel Pinkham for the programs’ top wind players. With a strong commitment to education, the group continues to bring chamber and contemporary music into the public, private and community schools in the Boston Area including ongoing work as faculty with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Steak Bomb – 11 american cheese, peppers, onions, and linguica no mushrooms, no salami…NOT a Bomb…
I tend to agree.
Just because someone calls it a steak bomb is it a steak bomb?
Like if I served a tuna sub and called it a Steak Bomb does that make it a Steak Bomb?

AFRICA Part 6
Today we finished up our time in Kafue National Park with an early morning exploration of the Kafue River. We then flew back to Livingstone airport and took a minibus to Hwange National Park, Zibabwe’s largest, by way of Victoria Falls. (More later).
Among the highlights at Huange was being surrounded by a herd of elephants who stuck their trunks and tusks inside our vehicle, tried to devour our two-way radio antenna and who were generally rambunctious. In hindsight, great fun.
Great news! Ricky “King” Russell is jumping’ into the pool with us. Along with Cheryl Arena and Ed Scheer. Don’t miss it! Tonight at The Rhumb Line 8:30pm
Dave says,
It was a much needed week off. Finally had time for some maintenance and a new sleeve job.Had my brakes removed, too. Now we’re back with a great lineup for the rest of the summer.
So, let’s welcome back Ms. Cheryl Arena, that shit-kickin’ former Texass gal with the big harp and the bigger repertoire. She’s comin’ so look out. Try not to spill your drink while she regales you with her own upbeat blend of the finest toons that money can’t buy. Furthermore, Mr. Edd Scheer, that baddie of the eggbeaters will be providing the 60 cycle hum that’ll thrill you to the bottom of your big toe. We’re gonna make him sing a lot, keep him on his other toes. As of yet, the dragnet hasn’t picked up a suitable suspect for the guitar chair, but rest assured, he’ll be a homunculus where it counts. Bring your glutes, and a couple Ace bandages. Remember: we hit at 8:30. Thursday 7.11.2013

AFRICA Part 5
This episode shows our departure from Santawani Camp in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, our flight in a 5 passenger puddle jumper to Kasane where we boarded a bus to the Zambezi River where we crossed over in a small boat to Zambia
We then boarded another bus which took us to the Livingstone Airport where another light plane was waiting to fly us to Kafue National Park and our tented camp that would be our home for the next three days.
After extricating ourselves from a mud hole during a game drive, we had the extraordinary experience of seeing four leopards in one place. A young male had killed a crown crane only to be confronted by a senior male. The youngster calmly dropped his prey which was quickly snatched up by the older cat who retired to the brush for a private dinner.

We will reschedule the sail in August and will surely keep you posted.

Get Our Kids off the Land and Back on the Water!
Get Our Kids off the Land and Back on the Water!
The 2013 Gloucester Schooner Festival — with a record breaking 20 boats sailing this year — celebrates and honors our maritime history. At the same time, the Festival works to ensure the future of that heritage by supporting youth programs that put kids on Cape Ann waters. In 2012, the Committee provided two grants of $1,500 each to the GHS Sailing Program and The Gloucester Museum School/Project Adventure to support their on-the-water programs. Leading up to this year’s 2013 Festival, the Committee is raising funds, beyond the costs of producing the Gloucester Schooner Festival weekend, to continue such support and is seeking applications from interested organizations and groups.(We are still accepting contributions and sponsorships from businesses and individuals to make this happen.)
To apply for 2013 funds, organizations or groups are asked to complete an application and submit it by August 1, 2013 to the Gloucester Schooner Committee, c/o Maritime Gloucester, 23 Harbor Loop, Gloucester, MA 01930. A copy of the application can be found at www.gloucesterschoonerfestival.net
AFRICA Part 4
Typically we went on two game drives a day, one starting about 6:30 AM and the other in the afternoon until dusk. We never knew what to expect.
On this day we saw ostriches, impalas, a hyena, some of the 400+ species of birds, wildebeests consorting with zebras (wildebeests have poor eyesight and rely on other species to warn them of danger) and LIONS!
We tracked and found a pride of four lions. After a few minutes a young male who was not part of the group wandered by. The four observed him closely, but the newcomer appeared not to notice them and walked off into the bush.
