From Brooklyn Bridge – 9/22/2001

Originally posted on September 11, 2011. On this day my family and I walked westward across the Brooklyn Bridge to Ground Zero. About midway, there was a brass relief image of the Manhattan skyline.  Where the Twin Towers were visible on the plaque, now there was only sky.

VIDEO: Allen Estes & Howard Blackburn on Wicked Tuna

Last night Allen Estes performed his hit, “Not With Ya Hands” about Gloucester’s hero Howard Blackburn at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was filmed for next season’s Wicked Tuna by the Nat Geo crew.  And our own intrepid Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV.  We can’t show you everything we shot until early next year when Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, but we can show you Allen’s performance right now and you can catch a glimpse of the film crew at the end.

Best of all, you can see Allen Estes live with a new six-piece, all-star band on October 5th at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly.  You’ll hear old favorites along with new music he hasn’t yet recorded.  Allen — with his new band featuring multi-platinum guitarist David Brown with Fairport Convention founder Dave Mattacks on drums, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, Steve Burke on keyboards and Wolf Ginandes on Bass — will have you on your feet!

This will be a night you won’t soon forget.  Good seats are still available.  Get them here.

To get you in the mood, watch Allen’s Souls of the Sea special tonight at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV  Channel 12.

Alchemy Chef Scott Jensen wins Wicked Tuna Challenge at Alchemy last night

Last night Alchemy’s chef Scott Jensen narrowly defeated chef Steve Morlino of Boston’s Union Bar and Grille (where Chef Scott got his start) at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was judged by the audience, who got to taste both dishes.

Before dinner, Alchemy’s mixologist Felicia Grossi, who won the Block Party’s first Ryan & Wood Cocktail Contest mixed up her Ryan & Wood signature cocktail for fishermen and guests aboard one of the Tuna boats.

And our son, John, got to pilot the boat.  “That boat’s got a lot of tech!” says John.

The entire event was filmed for Wicked Tuna Season 3 and Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV.  You’ll be able to see some of the event on Cape Ann TV before Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, and we’ll let you know when to catch it.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line, to Host Ricky “King” Russell this Thursday 9.12.2013 ~ 8:30 to 11:30

DSC04152

It’s back to the Three Stooges Trio this Thursday, so please welcome back that yeti of the guitar, Mr. Rikky “King” Russell. Borne and bread in and of the blues, this cat has been a fixture on the Boston scene for many decades and really knows how to twist your dials for maximum squirming. Even better, that amazing saxist and singer, that major teen idol Mr. Mario Perrett, will be on hand to help us all out. Unfortunately, our drummer under contract, Mr. Edd “Duodenum” Scheer is suffering from rupture of the deep and will be unable to join us, so, we have enlisted the aid of that swarthy bongo boy from the “Love Dogs”, Mr. “Downtown” Steve Brown. Known to change clothing in a phone booth, he’s set to fly in on time to rock the house. It’s gonna be a great nite of flying fur, bad jokes and misplaced observations. Czech it out! Hours 8:30 till 11:30.
But wait! There’s more!  I’ll be hanging out at the same time same bat-channel  location to witness the arrival of Ms. Mari Martin this Saturday nite at the Rhumb Line. My favorite vocalist, she’ll put a smile on your face and blisters on your feet.
She’s bringing the Low yo-yo band to prepare you for doomsday. That’s  Mr. Bogus on guitar, John “Cameron” Swazey, on keys, Roger Broccolibanque, on pistons, and yours truly on base. Music starts at  9:30 when we start cranking  that bumper jack between your head and the ceiling. Count on it!

And for all you folks into video poker and free jell-o:
I’ll be down at the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday from 1 to 3 with the Good Old salty Jazz Band, cranking out all your favorite hits from the teens and twenties. It’s really a blast. Hope to see you there.
By the way, I’ve finally succumbed to the temptations of the web, and now have a Facebook page. Soon’ I’ll learn how to use it. Here is link:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Davesags-blues-party/1413082458915228
Please don’t clog it up with acne remedies, anti-gluten rants or conspiracy theories. Ockham’s Razor works for me. I got enough problems….
And again, thank you for your continued support. Without you we would be nothing. Live music is best!

Happy, Happy Birthday Baby

Andromeda Emmeline Lammott is 4 years old today. DOB 9/11/09 at 11:11 pm in Chicago, IL. Her mother is Vignette, and Lucas is her dad. I spent most of the day with little Andromeda on Monday, while Vignette and Peggy of the POP Gallery gave my gallery a window "makeover." It was a birthday present from them. Delightful all around, so happy birthday to little Andromeda.

An African Music and Dance Party, featuring the band ‘Samba Lolo & Boubacar Diabate’ at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center, 6 Wonson St.  Saturday, September 14th 7-10 pm. $10
About Boubacar Diabate & Samba Lolo
Boubacar Diabate is a Griot singer, guitarist, songwriter and storyteller from Mali. ‘Bouba’ creates his own style of contemporary music by combining traditional rhythms with modern influences including Reggae, Blues, Bluegrass, and Jazz. Bouba sings of a common shared experience of love, life and humanity, giving all an opportunity to hear the age-old West African tradition of Griot storytelling through song.
Now based in Boston, Bouba was born in Bamako, Mali-West Africa. He was raised playing Djembe and Guitar while learning from the Griot elders as they passed down their ancient heritage through their music and song.
About Griots
In Africa, Griots pass down the oral tradition of legends, stories, and proverbs through many generations, which is essential to preserve their culture. A Griot is a teacher, poet, musician, and participant in important ceremonies such as weddings, naming initiations and installations of chiefs.

See Food and Eat It.

I'm a see food eater. I see it and eat it. I'm also a big guy. These are my leftovers after dining at the Seaport Grille. Every Monday features $12.95 Prime Rib with two sides. It weighs in at 14 to 16 ounces. And man, it is mighty tasty! Add to that the excellent bar service from Kaela Riley (Gloucester), and conversation with long time MAC tennis coach Avis Murray and her friend Margellen Callahan, both also from 01930. Two dinners from this, and didn't kill it all.

Last minute change of City Council Meeting location

Late Press Release from Council President Jackie Hardy

The City Council meeting of Tue., Sept 10 will be Relocated from the Lanesville Community Center to the Kyrouz Auditorium at 7pm.

LCC members,

It is with deep regret that I notify you that tomorrow’s City Council meeting is being relocated from the Lanesville Community Center (LCC)  to the Kyrouz Auditorium at City Hall at 7pm for a myriad of reasons: the size of the anticipated crowd, inability of councillors to connect via wifi to documents they will need, and lack of a speaker system that connects to assistive listening devices as in accordance with 521.CMR. 14.5.

Many thanks to the LCC for inviting us into Lanesville so that we could begin to reach out to the many neighborhoods in this beautiful city.

Respectfully,

Jackie Hardy

Council President

Bill and Julie at Mile Marker 28

Bill and Julie Ingram, from Lee, MA are in Gloucester for their 28th wedding anniversary. They were married on September 7th, 1985 at Saint Mary's in Lee. Their wedding song was "Hotel California" by the Eagles. Bill is the COO of Great Barrington's Wastewater Treatment facility. Julie works for the Lennox Valley Recycling Station., otherwise known as "WTF." They have two outstanding sons, one of which is an engineering major in college. I love these folks, and we should be proud of what they've done with their lives. Already part of the GMG Nation, I'm sure they'll be moving here soon.
