Unidentified Bird Visitor

unidentified bird visitor

This little bird flew into the gallery and couldn’t find his way back out.  At first I thought it was a vireo, but now I’m not sure.  His underside was paler yellow than a gold finch, and above was olive green.  Does anyone know what he is?  I did eventually catch him, but then he ended up in Diana’s Gallery.

Even after dark, the street is packed. Here is my neighbor Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant. Always busy and always tasty. All the restaurants serve late.

Harry Cusick Wharf Dedication at Marine Railways

harry cusick wharf dedication

Some photos from this afternoon’s dedication of the new Harry Cusick Wharf at Gloucester Marine Railways – the completion of a 9 year project involving cutting through a myriad of government agency red tape and paperwork by Alice (I’m so sorry Alice, I forgot your last name).  Even a harbor seal and the Ardelle came by to check it out and holler congratulations (Harold, not the seal).  Viking gave a great speech thanking all involved in the process.  It is a really beautiful wharf, and if you haven’t been to the Railways lately, you should go by and check it out.

There are still some great seats left! Saturday, September 21, 8 PM for SAVOY BROWN – UNPLUGGED featuring KIM SIMMONDS @ The Shalin Liu Performance Center

savoybrown poster

Legendary…a blues/rock institution…true innovators. These are just a few of the ways Savoy Brown has been described over the past 40 years by music critics and fans. One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today. From London’s Soho night clubs in 1966 to headlining the world’s most famous venues (Carnegie Hall, Fillmore’s East, and West, Cobo Hall, etc.), Savoy Brown has done it all and as the band continues to tour worldwide they give a glimpse into the past and also inspire new listeners with their personal brand of rocking boogie, blues, and rock.

The band will play a special ‘bare essentials’ unplugged show, tailored for the intimate setting of the Shalin Liu Performance Center. For any Savoy Brown fan, this is a unique opportunity to see a one of a kind show with special material!

Irving Johnson and the Yankee

Irving Johnson (1905-1991) was one of the most famous sailors of his century. He circumnavigated the world seven times, in two sailing vessels, both named Yankee. He later commanded a US Navy warship, the USS Sumner during WWII. There's so much to learn about this great man. See Wikipedia and get a copy of his film, Around Cape Horn.

Felice Leonardo “Leo” Buscaglia Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

September 19, 2013

“Don’t brood. Get on with living and loving. You don’t have forever.”

Felice Leonardo “Leo” Buscaglia (1924-1998)

image

A California native born to an Italian immigrant family, Buscaglia spent much of his childhood in Italy, returning to the United States for his education, which culminated in three degrees from USC including a PhD. After joining the faculty, he was motivated to begin offering a class on love following the suicide of a favorite student. He wrote more than a dozen books on how to connect with other humans. His arresting lecturing style caught the attention of producers at PBS who made him a celebrity speaker, often featured during pledge drives, and a sought after counselor. Five of his books were on the New York Times best seller list simultaneously. Another similar piece of his advice: “Don’t spend your precious time asking ‘Why isn’t the world a better place?’ It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is ‘How can I make it better?’ To that there is an answer.”

“Blackfish” Screening Benefit for Ocean Alliance

On Sunday September 29th at 6:30 Cape Ann Community Cinema will be hosting a one-night-only screening of the film “Blackfish” to benefit Ocean Alliance. We’ve been hearing the buzz about this film for months and are very excited to have it in Gloucester. More a psychological thriller than a documentary, it tells the story of the killer whale Tilikum whose actions in captivity resulted in the deaths of several people and it raises the question of whether these ocean-roaming hunters should be held in tanks for our entertainment. Ocean Alliance CEO Iain Kerr will be speaking briefly before the film and answering questions afterwards. Tickets can be purchased here – http://capeanncinema.wordpress.com/advance-tickets/

See you there!

Buh Bye Fishermen. It was nice knowing you. Now Push Over.

Feds Visit, and are Family

A surprise visit today by David Crary, Jr. from Eastham, MA. "Davey" is the Fire Management Officer for the Cape Cod National Seashore, and has duties in many other areas, including fighting wildfires in various areas of the United States. I consider him a friend, and sometimes call him "brother." He's Janet's real brother. Asked what he's been up to, and why he's here in Gloucester, he nonchalantly replied: "Going to a NPS meeting in Portland, but I've been in Idaho helping put out a wildfire." Makes you think about the men and women who put their lives on the line to combat fires around the country. It's physical, stressful, and dangerous work. Smoke inhalation alone can ruin more than your day, if you're lucky. Thank you.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party to host Lisa Marie…..once again the joint will be jumpin Thursday @ The Rhumb Line 8:30 to 11:30

Dave Sag's

We offer natural pain relief this week as we welcome back that analgesic angel of the high stool: Ms. Lisa Marie. She’s been busy putting out fires all over New England, and now it’s our turn for her to take the pain out of your heart. She’ll be belting it out from 8:30 on,bringing tears to your eyes and a smile on your lips. Clothing optional.
She’s bringing along a couple of her favorite sidemen. First off, there’s Silvertone (or as I call him-Silverfish) Steve. Born that way, with a glitar in his mouth and Vitalis® on his fingers, Nobody knows his real name, although if you said it backwards, the entire bar would disappear..
Then there’s Johnny Juxo, on keys, whom I’ve never met, but my traiteur knows him well. I believe her! Had a good drummer on board,  but he took a stray bullet at a jam session, so I’m waiting to hear back from my Ouija board So, roll out the barrel and have a good  time. See you then.
