YMCA Sailing Program

After all the talk this past week of wishing children had an opportunity to get on the water for a sailing program Damon Cummings wrote to tell me that there are already many programs in place to get local youth out on the water-

Here is a link to the High School and Middle School program run by Patti Page. It is during the school year, spring and fall, of course so the YMCA summer program is using the floats and boats for the summer (except that we took a bunch of Tall Ship sailors out sailing the afternoon before last):

Joe,
When you saw the City of Gloucester Youth Sailing Program Boston Whaler and a runabout leave the harbormaster’s pier this morning full of kids, they were on their way out to go sailing on the city owned Rhodes 18s and 19 and the Gloucester High school sailing team 420s. They went by us under sail a few minutes later. They go out every weekday except Friday. The program is run by the YMCA now since the city summer recreational program has been phased out. Here is a link to the program:

That is only one of the sailing and harbor related programs presently under way for kids in Gloucester. During the school year Patti Page runs a High school and Middle School program with the 420s and Rhodes. The students do not pay a cent and we take both beginners and champions. The program has a joint Gloucester and Rockport sailing team that competes against other high schools around the state. Kevin Cook is the coach and some funny old guy runs the races. Moreover the Heritage Center and the Lannon run a massive program for Gloucester students and the Gloucester Museaum school at Ram Island does as well. The International Dory Racing Committee has junior racers (some in Middle School) racing against Canada and the Heritage Center has an off and on youth program in the pilot gigs. It is my understanding that a Community Boating center is in the works and that is something we all have wanted for a long time.
Whatever you may have heard to the contrary, Gloucester offers a wealth of opportunities for youth who are not in private yacht clubs to get out on the water.
Here’s a picture of the kids leaving the Harbormaster’s float to head to the sailing program.

While Trish Sanford’s Bubbles will be closing it’s doors- fear not.  Trish’s (forgive the pun) bubbly personality will not leave Main Street, you will find her at the Green Life store right down the street.  I’ll be sure to catch up with Trish once she gets settled in to her new job as manager at Green Life.

Rob Schneider In Gloucester At Pleasant Street Tea Company

Friday after work I drove downtown to grab a cup of iced tea and while circling to find a parking spot I saw Rob Schneider sitting outside at the Pleasant Street Tea Co.  I found a parking spot in front of Passports and treked up with camera in tow to snap a shot.   First walking past him I asked if he was enjoying his stay in Gloucester and he said he loves it and the people were really nice.  I didn’t whip out the camera but instead went inside and grabbed a fruited iced tea drink  (Pleasant St Tea Co makes some really refreshing iced tea BTW).

So I was going to sheepishly ask Rob if he would mind me snapping a quick picture for the blog and after paying for my iced tea inside a group of folks had gathered around him.

I’ll tell you he couldn’t have been more patient or accommodating.  What a sweet guy.  He took a little time with each person, signed autographs and made conversation, never looking distressed or trying to rush folks along.   I snapped a quick picture while he was posing for some other folks and then headed back to Passports.

2009 “COOLEST DAD CONTEST” WINNERS!

CAPE POND ICE COMPANY ANNOUNCES

2009 “COOLEST DAD CONTEST” WINNERS!

Cape Pond Ice would like to thank all the proud children who submitted essays and photos for the Cape Pond Ice Company 2009 “Coolest Dad Contest.” Essays from Cape Ann and all over the country came in by hand, mail and e-mail.  All of the nominated Dads clearly qualified for the award in the eyes of their child. Persuasive Coolest Dad nominations were submitted by children of all ages and generations, from age 8 to age 68. All essays and photographs uniquely presented just how “Cool” their Dad is, and our judging team was faced with challenging decisions.

Cape Pond Ice has chosen 3 Winners for 2009 “Coolest Dad”!

Carlos Lovasco (deceased) of Gloucester

Neil Matthews of Gloucester

Tom Mortillaro of Gloucester

All Three Grand Prize Winners will receive “Cape Pond Ice Coolest Guys Collection”

Carlos Lovasco Jr., nominated his “Cool Dad” Carlos who passed away 12 years ago and was a fisherman, but he would rather have been a musician. Carlos Sr. hated fishing but did it as a means to support his family.  When Carlos Jr. would ask to go out fishing with him, his Dad would always take him in hopes that his son would realize how dangerous fishing is and he wanted his son to follow his own path.  Carlos Jr. did follow his own path and did become a musician.

Lindsay Matthews nominated her “Cool Dad” Neil for always being kind, caring and involved in what she does.  But most importantly, she states, “What makes my Dad so special and important to me is the fact that he inspires me everyday to be a better person.” What most inspires me about my Dad’s hard work is that it never ends.  As a daughter I could not have ask for a better role model.

Michael Mortillaro nominated his “Cool Dad” Tom for being the glue and love that keeps me happy, healthy and most of all, never giving up!  He teaches me new things and lets me know when I need steering in the right direction. I know my Dad will always be there for me.  I can only hope to grow up to be such a caring and understanding person as my Dad is.

As the “Grand Prize” “Coolest Dads” winners, Carlos Lovasco, Neil Matthews, and Tom Mortillaro have won “Cape Pond Ice Coolest Guys Gift Collections.”

Cape Pond Ice would also like to recognize the following 2009 “Coolest Dad” submissions with Honorable Mention Awards :

Arthur Brodeur from Eastford, Connecticut nominated by his daughter Jennifer

Sane Skinner from Gloucester nominated by his sons Shawn & Cameron

Chris Funk from Rockport nominated by his daughters Veronica & Eliana

Ian Milgram from Glouceseter nominated by his daughter Eden Wilkins

Ralph Hendrickson from Florida nominated by his daughter Cynthia

Mr Cabral from Gloucester nominated by his daughter Gianna

Scott Prentiss of Rockport nominated by his son Henry (age 8)

Alan Murray of Gloucester nominated by his son Brent (age 13)

Richard Lussier of Gloucester nominated by his sons Jacques & James (ages 11 & 13)

Bill Papp of Gloucester nominated by his daughter Grace Papp

All of the 2009 “Coolest Dads” will receive a Cape Pond Ice Gift Certificate!  Cape Pond Ice would like to thank all who participated this year.  All of the essays submitted were wonderful and in the eyes of the children making their nominations, you all are the “COOLEST DADS AROUND!”
